To arms 360 defenders!!! According to N4G, Microsoft has apparently confirmed that there is a flaw in the Xbox 360. The flaw causes CD's and DVD's to become damaged over time.
Microsoft has admitted Saturday night that there is a flaw in the Xbox 360. That happened in the Dutch television programme "Kassa". The flaw causes CDs and DVDs that are spinning in the player to get damaged.
According to a press declaration from Microsoft, the Xbox 360 can cause scratches. Initially the company denied to be guilty for the damage. Microsoft kept saying for months that the gamers themselves are responsible for scratches on the discs.

Wow, I was actually going to buy a 360 this summer. But I keep hearing about 360's defects, bricked systems, noisy DVD drives, and now scratched DVDs? Knowing my insanely bad luck for getting defective hardware (I am familiar with many RMA procedures for many companies), I'm willing to be I'd probably get a defective 360. I'll probably wait until next year and see if PS3 gets more exclusives.

im a little confused how this can happen but I would think that its due to the lasers elevation making it rise a little higher then safe which be why its only on some 360's.

Its be cause the dutch F*cks are laying there consoles flat, putting a disk in it and then decide to pick it up and turn virtical. By doing this it scratches the hell out of the dvd/cd...common sense would be not to move your console when disk is spinning or disk is even in it. But hey you can't fix stupid.

The real answer is
"XBOX 360 - MADE IN THE USA"
No other reason for it. Even Chinese bootleggers make better quality stuff.

I somehow doubt that the is case. The spinning mechanism should engage and keep the disc flat against the "bottom" of the drive no matter if it's vertical or horizontal, and it should be the same distance either way. Moving it shouldn't affect it, unless maybe you're vigorously shaking it. If the laser head is bumping into the disc without any kind of padding, that makes sense..
Still, they said it only affects 1-2 million Xbox360's. I'd bet they are older ones. It's definitely not good news for them, but I doubt it will be an issue for most owners.

Nope i have seen three retards in my area do it and each time its a game ruined and it no longer works. You can even hear it scratching. Just my opinion but I do have some evidence behind it.

I have had my 360 since launch Nov. 22, 2005. Not one DVD, CD, Game scratched or damaged. Only seen the red lights once when I forgot to plug in AV cable. I have opened mine several times:) painted it and traveled with the thing several times. I must be the luckiest guy 'n the world.

I have had my console for 2 months (bought it new) and have NEVER moved it after setting it up. I just noticed yesterday that my Gears of War disc has a deep circular scratch, which really pisses me off. I have so many friends that have had the 3 ring of death, or similar issues, I am almost scared to turn on my 360. While I love my Xbox 360, I am very unhappy with the quality of my new $400 toy.
The 360 has been out for almost a year and a half, its total BS we are still seeing tons of stories of quality issues with the 360.

I accidentally knocked my 360 over once while it was standing vertically on the floor while a game was spinning, it made a horrible noise and left a deep circular scratch, the game would no longer progress beyond the menu, luckily I had bought the game the previous day pre-owned, so I took it back. other than that no problems.
So I guess people are defiantly justified in flashing their drives and backing up their games, it sounds like a good idea to me.

Gamestation told me to always keep the 360 Horizontal as using it in the Vertical position can damage discs easilly. (must be because it makes it easier for the laser to more further out)

That and the drives are just flat out garbage. It even sounds like garbage, disposals that is.

A Microsoft rep said it on Dutch TV, so yeah, probably fake

well ms doesn't even make the roms so if thats your beef you really cant get on ms' case for that.

A rotating disc will tend to remain on the same plane even when you move its axis.
Therefore, if you try and disturb it whilst it's still in motion, you're going to scratch your disc up a treat.

im no expert but The 360 dvd drive seems pretty much like the kind of drive
we all use in our PC's I wonder if it being turned on it's side is really all that good for it?
think im gonna lay it flat from now on as it's my second 360 and I too am a little scared when I use the thing.
I still love my 360, I just hope it lasts...

Couldn't agree more with you. This is a common issue many people overlook, and blame on the console without thinking to read the manual.

Can we say owned on maxconsole?
Eh.
Owned!
When the PS2 was released (I was young and naive) I was showing my friends how you can stand it on its side and move the logo. I learned from that mistake and never got to play Tekken Tag again. Switching a console from horizontal to vertical and vice versa is always a bad idea when the disc is spinning, 100% guaranteed to damage the disc. I know from experience, lol.

That is such a BS statement. If you go back and read my prior post in this thread, it has happened to me, and I have NEVER moved, rotated, flipped over, or even moved my 360 an inch Just because it has NOT happened to you, does not mean its not a problem for many people. I have never had the 3 red lights of death, but I DO acknowledge its a problem for many people.
I know the MS fanboys will never see any wrong with the 360. Do not get me wrong, I do agree, that when it works, its an awesome machine, that why I spent $400 and bought one. That being said, there are allot of people having various problems with their 360. Just because your 360 works today, does not mean it will tomorrow, and that is what I worry about every time I turn on my $400 console.

Um...I don't think that it creates scratches as much as the DVD Lenses can die in early 360s. I have a 360 right now that has a Dying Lens, I know it's the lens and not the DVDs because I get Errors every so often even on brand new games without a scratch on them.

i bought some disc connies, snap on to the topside w/ a clear plastic on the bottom, thus far my 360 has eaten one connie and one copy of CoD2.
I think MS must have taken a lot of shortcuts early on just to beat everyone else out the door first...and its shown ever since. I am betting that most of these disc scratching problems are happening with the launch batch of systems. kinda feel sorry for the people who spent 400 on a system that has had more than its share of bugs.
I have had a 360 for 6 months...and have had zero disc scratches and zero red lights...so I cant speak of poor quality personally, but there certainly is a lot of reports and rumors on the net of it.

You mean M$ released something with glaring bugs in it that will probably never be fixed for everyone who uses it...? I'd have never guessed it! By their track record, everything they do never needs fixing after initial release, so why should 360 be any different?
I hope the sarcasm is coming through in there... but to me there is a reason why they have to release bug fixes to windows at least one Tuesday of every month, and why they even had to include a "ring of death" mode on both their consoles. Too bad these OSs and consoles are getting so bloody complicated that they in fact have to plan to make corrections for mistakes, even if the planning only includes pre-packaged denials.

It intends to say physical damages!. You speaks of backup as piracy, once so much where to greater reason it is necessary to play with some backup copies!.:D

My 360 had the 3ROL on startup, but I fixed it by installing new heat sink mounts. Honestly MS should of known that the X-Clamp mounts they used would cause motherboard bend leading to the ROL. For some reason I guess MS thought the X on the X-Clamp looked cool, and just didn't bother to thing of the problems it would cause.

This pisses me off on a major scale, because I have started to notice small circular scratches on some of my discs. I didn't shell out £280 plus an extra £60 odd for games just to have them wrecked, so I hope they fix it.

Yep, same here. The only thing that's ever gone wrong with my Xbox is that the lens died after me playing so much burnt media. lol.
I've been through 1 360 but have yet to experience ANY Hardware problems. Aside from my 360's lens dying that is, but it hasn't failed like a lot of people have their 360s die from overheating and crap.
