£179?!!!!

Thats INSANE. You can get a 500gb SATA II drive for about £80 on ebuyer. So what if its filled with **** you dont really want and stuck in a microsoft 360 casing, its still a SATA drive.

There's no way they can justify charging that much.

They justify it by saying it's plug and play, and most people feel that's justified because they have no idea what a hard drive enclosure is, which is basically what this one is; a hard drive in an enclosure

funny how xbots bash ps3 price, now look at this

at least ps3's manufacturing cost is actually higher than its price, now this?? it's taking a load of profit

but if you think, in the uk a core is £200, and this will be £180 = £380

twice as much space as the ps3 and still under the price...

but i see where people are coming from, it IS a MAJOR ripoff

"The standalone $179 120GB HDD would be released with a few more things pre-loaded."

I don't know if it's another Maxconsole typo or it will really cost £179 but the article says dollars...

£179. I'll give birth before I pay that much for a 120GB HDD

Xbox live, peripherals, charge packs, extra hard drive is now needed for 75 percent of the 360 populace. Let's just forget these necessities exist and completely throw them out the window right? Wrong

Whoops I forgot the service fee when your 360 dies 2 days outside of it's warentee. 180 bucks please

ps3 isnt just about space, it's a blu ray player, the blu ray drive is what makes it expensive, and the latest technology always expensive, because the manufacturing cost is expensive, there's no way around it, no use bitching about it since sony's already taking loss

but this is just a major rip off, there's no excuse for that price, however the wii is also a major rip off, so i guess they learn some lesson from the old and greedy nintendo

I don't get it, why is it evil for a company to make a profit off of something they sell? When you buy a Bic Razor, do you expect to get Bic Razor Blades really cheap? Of course they don't make any money on their Razor, but since you have to buy their blades, whats so wrong about them selling it for more than they make them for.

Supply and Demand, When you buy a 360, you know that getting a bigger hard-drive down the line will be expensive. There is no reason to complain, if you don't like it, go get a PS3 and play Resistance for the rest of your life.

And Then, some fanboy above me, said something about the Wii being a huge rip-off, and shame on old greedy Nintendo. Im sorry, but thats absurd. Nobody who buys a Wii is expecting Next-Gen graphics, they just wanna play games. And even though Sony is taking a hit on their console, that doesn't make it a good deal for someone who just wants to play games, because at the end of the day, its still $600, and it still doesn't have Halo 3 or Super Smash Bros Brawl.

theres making a profit then theres... this

if the price is right $179 which should be £90 but there gonna slab a nice big fat TAX sticker on it so it'll be £130+ me thinks

Do you have a link for one under £80?

All I see is links to an American site that charges $ and won't ship to the UK

We all know what happens to hardware prices when they're released in the UK ^^^

EDIT: I can find a 3.5 but not a 2.5 for under £80.
The cheapest 2.5 I can find is http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/117748 160GB for £74

Keep in mind those you are listing are 3.5" hdds while 360 hdds are 2.5" wich are expensive, but 170$ is still more than the double of the price here in France, are those 360 hdds made of gold or something ? I'll get one if I can slap each microsoft employ once.

This is it people, like i said before, the start of the microsoft "hatchet in foot" disease.

they started off doing everything well, but now that the ps3 is selling slow, and the wii is....well a JOKE (even though its sold more than a brand new testament by dubya)....still....microsoft is getting a bit too highy ahd mighty and making all the WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG decisions. oh well....

Aside from all the PS3 fanboys posting in here about the outrageous price...it's only going to be 120 bucks in the US. That's 20 bucks more then the 20 Gig that comes seperate from the premium, so expensive? I don't think so...at least not in comparison. I will say that it's expensive for a HDD though, I bought my 120 Gig external for 60 bucks. lol. But, it's all the content that hacks the price up. And didn't MS already say there was going to be 3 or 4 XBLA games packed with? When they announced it they mentioned Hexic HD and Uno for sure going to be on it, and I think they said a few more not announced yet or something along those lines.

Hey, I am fearthenoob.com and when I posted this I talk in a US perspective.

So the HDD...currency converted is actually 132.003 EUR

However microsoft is know to price things higher in the UK then in the US. So my guess would be that the new HDD would around 150 EUR.

Try again.

The largest 2.5" drive (which is what the 360 has) is 200GB.

Thanks for playing.

The extra's are nothing to me, plus lets face it, if you live in the EU then it's not even worth getting as you will have no use for it. With limited downloads, unlike the movie and tv downloads in the US, the extra space is of no use or very little at best. I can see few selling over here unless MS actually give us something worth putting on there. 20GB/14GB is more than enough for me for now, it only has to hold game updates and demo's which means even now with a fair bit of stuff on the drive I still have 11GB free. Maybe they ought to give away free XBL time with it or maybe even XBL points so you can actually download somthing worth keeping on there (all those demo's and trailers would likley be wiped in the first hour if I had one).

I'm a 360 owner and you are incorrect about the price. They are currently 172.67 at Walmart, which is a far cry above $120.

Then they raised the price, A Microsoft Employee was on AOTS and mentioned the new HDD would be 120 bucks. Though, no one really needs that much space unless they feel the need to compensate or something. And I must ask, how did you see it at Walmart when it's not even up at Walmart.com? Or Gamestop.com

if its £90 then good, £100 ok, but anything over and its just not worth it at all. I prefer the ps3s approach, because my 360 and the hard disk stays where it is. If its one thing the ps3 got right, it always has a hard disk and its upgradeable. I dont need to list the things it got wrong lol. Tbh the 360s hard disk doesnt bother me, I have 14GB free I dont use it for much of anything, part from demos that I delete once im done with them. But with thise 2.5 laptop drives that cost too much. Its like well I wont use the portableness of it. So I dont want to pay the extra cost. I have 3 hard disks in my pc, 2 250GB and 1 160GB combined they cost about £130. So its essentially 500GB vs 120GB for around £90. One of them is portable but I wont use it. Now there is no doubt that the 360s hard disks are priced at round about how much they are worth. But the actually GB content vs price just doesnt cut it for me. Especially since I probably wont use it lol.
