I'm trying to boot StarFox Assault game with the Qoob BIOS v1.2. I'm using Ritek R03 discs (Maxell DVD+R) to boot. I have the laser tweaked (Drive Code 61) to 200 ohms and I got RE1 to work just fine. After the chip detects the game ID and boots, it goes black and doesn't continue. I left the disc spinning for a minute or two.

I tried the disc read with the BIOS and it reads the entire disc fine. The odd thing is this, I booted up GCOS v1.4 with the Qoob and used a swap to boot it. It boots and I get to the title screen but the text is missing. The voices and everything is there but when it comes to text, it just doesn't show up at all. I don't think the game image is bad because I reaquired the image and got the same problem.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I've tried different branded DVD discs burned at different rates but I still can't get ANY of them to boot StarFox Assault with the Qoob BIOS. I've tried Taiyo Yudens burned at both 8x and 4x speeds and I've tried applying the gcfix both 1.1 and 1.5f but they didn't do anything.

I use Ritek g04 media, and I played through it with no problems using GCOS, I haven't even tried it with the QOOB bios though.

Update: I just tried it with the Qoob bios and it worked fine. I think I have the Nomis release of it.

I've have the NoMiS release as well. It doesn't seem to work. I tried to get it again from a different place but I still get the same problem.

I'm going to try to rebuild the image and see what happens.

Some of the problems you have stated seem consistant with problems I get if the disc is not finalized when burnt with Nero. Also being a drive 61, 200 may be a little too high to get the 61 to read reliably sometimes (I have found that some games will work fine at a higher resistance, like RE4, yet others will not, Dead to Rights for example, even though they were both burnt in the same environment, same media, burner, speed etc). If you are sure the image is finalized, start bringing the resistance down in very small amounts at a time to see if this fixes the issues. Another thing I have found interesting is that I get more problems with drive 61's on first startup from cold than when I have been using it for a while. Sometimes, just leaving an original in the drive for 10 minutes or so then restarting the unit with the backup fixes problems for me as well.

It's true, always finalize the games in Nero. This seems to remove any problems with stability.

Dunno about other drive models, but the 61 definately freaks out with unfinalized disks.

Thanks, I'll try bringing down the resistance for my laser and see what happens. I always finalize my disc when I burn the GCM/ISO images. If that doesn't work, I guess I can try warming up the lens for about 10 minutes with an original and try again.
