Introduction
============

As many of you are probably aware, the PS2 has problems running DVD9 games
backed up onto dual layer media due to to problems reading from the second
layer. This is because the data format on burnt DL discs is different than on
pressed discs (burnt = OTP, pressed = PTP). However, we have discovered a
software hack which allows the PS2 to read even burnt OTP discs resulting in
working dual layer backups! Our Toxic firmware for DMS4 chips already includes
auto-patching functionality which applies our software hack on the fly when
booting games on dual layer media. For those without a DMS4, we present the
Toxic Dual Layer Image Patcher! The patcher works by applying our software
hack to the game image (.iso, .gi etc) before burning. Once the hack has
been applied by our patcher, burn the modified image to dual layer media
and play! This method will enable anybody with a modchip capable of booting
DVD9 media to backup and _play_ DVD9 games such as Gran Turismo 4.

Usage Instructions
==================

1) Obtain an image of the DVD9 game. Supported image file formats are:

.ISO, .GI, .MDS

2) Execute the Toxic patcher application.
3) Click on the open button (labelled "...") and select the image file
you wish to patch.
4) Click on the "Go" button to begin the patching process.
5) The status of the patching process will be displayed in the status
area. This will tell you if the patching was successful or not.
6) If patching was successful, burn the patched image to dual layer media
using your favorite burning application.

Notes
=====

1) If you get the RSOD (Red Screen Of Death) while attempting to boot your
DVD DL backup game, this is due to an authentication error. This can
happen when the "book type" of your backup is set to "DVD+R DL" and not
"DVD-ROM". Most burners will automatically set the book type of your
burnt disc to DVD-ROM, however if your burner does not do this you should
be able to manually modify the book type using burning software such as
DVD Decryptor. To verify that the book type of your burnt disc is set to
DVD-ROM, start DVD Decryptor, insert your backup disc and in the info
window find "Physical Format Information (Last Recorded):". A few lines
down should be the text "Book Type: DVD-ROM".

2) If your PS2 has problems reading from your DL backup (ie: movies are
choppy or the game even locks up at points) then this is probably due to
bad quality media or a bad burn. Make sure that you use decent quality
media and you burn at the SLOWEST possible speed. We have had best
results with Mitsubish and Verbatim DL media.

I have an old mod chip in my ps2 v3 - anyone try this out yet for GT4 and work on an older chip?

This method will enable anybody with a modchip capable of booting
DVD9 media to backup and _play_ DVD9 games such as Gran Turismo 4.

So if your mod can boot DVD9 - then it should work ;)

Thanks for the info - I am new to the ps2 scene. I have had a ps2 with a mod for over 3 years now (Hence the v3 with and old chip - I think possibly a magic or apple) so I know DVD9 will not boot. I been thinking about upgrading the chip but dont know what is the best - guessing the DMS4 - but you know if it aint broke dont mess with it cuz you just mess it up more. I have the HD installed and just really want to play GT4 off the HD. Just dont know how about doing it. All these patches, fixes and such are enough to make you confused. I been reading and reading and getting more and more confused. Things are not spelled out completely on what you need to do for GT4 to load off HD.

I thought this patcher was to allow anyone with a modded PS2 (old or new mod) to be able to boot the DVD9 backups? Is this not the case?

Do you still need the DMS4 to boot them?

I grabbed GT4, but dont have a DL disc yet to try it with. I havea v4 ps2 with a magic?? mod. Can't remember exactly what chip...It's been a while. Will I be able to use this patcher on gt4 and play it on a dl disc?

Thanks!

It'll work just fine, Zeus was just saying to get a DMS4 as his new chip ;)

Also to that same guy I recommend purchasing a 400c laser, if you have had your console 3 years it's about time for a new laser.

I am scare to touch my PS2. I have done tons of xbox installs but dont know much about PS2's. I dont really want to do much to it because I am scared I will do something bad to it and it works perfectly. I just put a network adapter and HDD now want to play GT4. I just dont know where to start now. I have the original disc but want to play it off the HDD to make load times faster. Sounds like more hassle then its worth. I heard there is a HDAdvanced/HDLoader that I can use that already is patched so I can just insert GT4 and it will load and run fine off the HDD. I just dont know where to fine it or if this is correct. I am in the same spot bill is at - old chip with a v3 PS2.
