i wanted to build the chiip but i cant find a place here in Australia that sell the ATmega8L8...anyone from Australia built a working chiip yet (or any other DIY-modchips for that matter?)
So Wiifree seems like the one to go as i ordered some PIC 12F629...does anyone know of simple programmer i can build to use for the 12F629 (like the chiip one-so that u don't have to get powersupply from usb,etc..)

also is there a better free modchip available....other than wiifree??

You don't need to get the ATmega8L8, a ATmega8-16pi will do the job. I got mine from Jaycar.

sweet...but is there any advantage in using a chiip than a wiifree?

this is easy to build yourself, don't have to buy a $25 PIC programmer....
the only main difference is PIC vs. ATLMEGA8 's as the chips though.
and, I KNOW that the Chiip will soon support PIC microcontrollers, and am pretty sure that Wiifree will be trying to get things working with the ATMEGA's...so anyway, it's whatever you think has the most support behind it now i guess. personally, i just ordered the parts for the ChiiP.

im really starting to like the chiip and are you sure its gonna be ported to a pic (hopefully a 12F629)....and if it does would the programer for the chiip change much as well?(as in harder to build than for a ATLMEGA8)
by the way, i had ordered free samples of the PIC 12F629 from sample.microchip.com and i just recieved an "Order Acknowledgement " email and in the shipping address it says: Telstra
My street name
My suburb
State
Country
It says telstra at the top couse i had to put a 'company name' when i registered and since i used a bigpond email i just put telstra in there....it'll still ship to my place right?

i want it to be ported too i dont like the huge chip and its very fragil compared to the pic chips i dunno i guess we will just have to wait and see...

i am positive that he plans on doing it sometime, yeah. but it may be a while.

The ATmega8 is larger than your typical 8-pin PIC, alright. Although I wouldn't call it "huge" by any means. But would you care to elaborate what's particularly fragile about it?

Yes you'll get it, in fact I used my university's name and I´ve been sampling from microchip for a couple of years

ok well theres a nice simple pic programer to use with a wiifree:
http://ps2-scene.org/forums/attachments/wiifree/12307-circuit-diagram-cheap-programmer-dummy-circuit2.jpg?d=1173490959
but i was wondering if it was possible to to use power from the serial port or something(like how its done on a chiip programmer with the 25pin D-sub connecter) instead of getting external power source??

I live in Australia and I've built a Chiip. Delivery of the ATMEGA8 was 2 weeks from Futurlec, so I'd recommend choosing express post if you order from them.
The ATMEGAs from Jaycar are hugely overpriced, I think they were $30 each or something when I looked.

yeh they were $20 at jaycar i think...thats why im interested in the wiifree now as i already ordered free samples of PIC12F629....so is there a simple pic programmer i can build (like the chiip one-so that i dont need external Power supply)???
edit: by the way where abouts u from?

ok i think ill stick to the chiip as i could order all the parts i need from Futurlec for under $15 delivered... :) ...all i gota do now is make my dad order it online (he hated buying stuff online)
ok i cant seem figure out waht kind of resister, etc to buy...can some one link to a shopping cart full with the required parts to build the chiip and programmer from Futurlec?....pleasssssssae:o :o

G'day mate, I'm also from Australia and I ordered the parts from futurelec.
Check out the main chiip thread here and there's a link to a complete shopping cart for futurelec. It's what I used when I ordered from them.
Granted, I haven't received the parts yet but I already made the order, paid for it, and received an email telling me it has been shipped.
So it should arrive soon for me.
Good luck!

just received the 3 sample PICs today so i might as well just try out wiifree...i just have to find someone that would solder the modchip onto the wii for me, cause i know ill just somehow stuff it up....:(

G'day again!
I received my parts from futurlec today.
Got home, built the programmer and chiip.
Installed into the wii, and success! It works!
For now I'll recommend the chiip!
Are you in Melbourne? I might be able to help you out...

damn it!!!:( ....too bad im in sydney (near blacktown)...but i think ill just build a wiifree, seeing as it seems to have almost all the features of a commercial chip...and just now someone compiled it with the speedfix....but thanx for the help anyways

So im going to go buy the parts needed for this Wiifree PIC programmer (picprogrammerobommb9.png (http://img246.imageshack.us/img246/1133/picprogrammerobommb9.png))
but dont know what type of transistor im ment to use (hell i dont even know what a transistor is used for)....so from dicksmith electronics (Transistors (http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.filereader?4603974f0322979a2740c0a87f9c06b3+EN/catalogs/CTG0000611) )
which one should i buy?....or can i just show them the diagram and will they know which ones i need?...also should i just buy any wire or something more specific(from that site as well)??
and it seems it will cost me $60AU to get the chip professionally installed
