Hi,
Ive installed a viper chip in my gamecube and everithing worked fine. I ajust the laser pod about 1/4 of turn since I didn have a OHM Meter.
After a few games didnt work, i deceided to tweek a little bit more but I busted the laser ajustement so now the gamecube doesnt work anymore. I had to buy another one on ebay and it is on the way via mail.
My question is HOW do you tweek the laser with a OHM meter. I never used one and dont know how test the meter before tweaking. When i touch the red and black togetter.....what shoud be the reading at X1K for OHM.
Thank you for all your input

the reading should be "one" it's easy as hell to use, don't worry about it. never ever adjust your laser if you have no way of telling what the value is, but you already figured that out the hard way.

the pot is _very_ sensitive, moving it the slightest bit (like a slight knock, not even a turn) changed the value ~40 ohms, so a quarter of a turn would be a fair bit ;)
if you look at the pot, it has 2 contacts on one side, and 1 on the other.. measure it by connecting one lead of your multimeter to the top contact on the side which has 2 contacts, and then the other to the side where it has only 1 contact. eg..

(use your imagination a bit hehe, but the 'x' is the points ;))

im just curious, when ur laser died, were u playing a game and it just stopped working? im just asking because ive really only had ps2 lasers die on me over time. i would grab a multimeter asap and test the pot before turning ur gc on when the new laser comes. my multimeter has a autoadjust setting which works fine, i believe the regular setting is 2k, but u may want to double check that before using it.

Read joetilo's post, he told you how to use the multi-meter. Just set the multimeter to 2k.

laser tweak is probily not needed
mine was tweaked to stop DRE but with good media i can set it back to default with no problems
Get better media! (Ritek G04) branded too not cheapo no-names (like ridata)

LOL, Ridata is Riteks official brand ;) . Here's a little thing:
"What is the difference between Ritek and Ridata?
Ritek is the manufacturer and Ridata is Ritek's own brand name. Ritek Ridata stands for top quality of Ritek DVD media. "
Others like Traxdata, Memorex, Office Depot, etc. just use the Ritek g04 dye.

it's the same old story. you gotta find media that your burner will like. It won't necessarily like ritek G04. It's important people understand this because, like many other people, I blindly used ritek G04 just because everyone said it was so great; I constantly got dres till I switched to memorex +R and my dres went away completely. So, yeah, Ritek G04's are good discs to try, but don't just assume that they're going to work great on your gamecube cuz there's a good chance that your burner doesn't burn those discs well.
Btw...no names like ridata? Do you have any idea what you're talking about? I don't know where you got your info from, but Ridata branded discs are always Ritek G04. That's their specific brand.

Gulliver, you are correct. While Ritek g04's are the best mini dvd-r's you can get, if you burner isn't good at burning mini dvd-rs(and there is a difference in burning full and mini's), then no matter what mini dvd-r you get, you'll still have problems. But if you have a burner that is good at burning mini dvd-r's(Like the NEC 3520a), then Ritek g04 is the way to go. If you use that combination, you will have very few(if any) DRE's.

I was speaking for full-size G04's because that's all I've tried. I'd like to try minis but I don't really have the money right now. If only they'd start making mini +R's, I'd be on those like white on rice:D

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that some burners are better are burning dvd-r then dvd+r, and also the other way around.
Gulliver, the Full Ritek g04's that you tried were dvd-r right? Maybe your burner isn't very good at burning dvd-r... What burner do you have?

Yeah, it likes +R better. I have a Sony DRU-710A. I also have some samsung that came with my desktop, haven't tried the riteks on that yet. Maybe I'll give it a go;)

I don't think that the Sony burners like mini dvd-rs much, I might be wrong though.

My sony likes memorex full-size dvd-r (the kind that don't have the G04 media code). Is this any indication as to what mini dvd-r my burner might like?

ive found that ridata fullsize G04's are genrally crappy and nasty.
but traxdata (8cm) or datasafe (12cm) branded G04s are much better and work perfect.
you just need to experment and see whats best for you.

i dont know how ritek are now but when g04 first came they were hit and miss. u could get one of the good batches or one of the dodgy ones. out of a 200bulk about 30 or so were bad. not quality bad, but surface scan fail bad. but i really havent heard anymore about bad batches of ritek.
