after reading some tuts i went out to radioshack and bought my self some stuff. however, i got some questions, since my local radioshack didn't have EXACTLY what the tut said. btw, this is for, my wii. i hope to mod it :) and since i may be getting a first gen or second gen chip...i'm not sure i'll be able to keep it forever because of nintendo updates or w/e.

equipment:

15-watt (grounded) soldering iron: i'm pretty it's right as it looks identical to the one in tut.

clear flux solder, .063 dia., 60/40: now...in the tut, it said to get a "standard rosin core 60/40 wire with a .32 dia. but...then it also says to buy some flux and/or prefluxed solder. so...is this solder okay? can i just use this instead of buying flux AND seperate "rosin core 60/40..."

hook-up wire 300volt, 22gauge, 1/64 pvc. the tut just calls for 26-30 guage wire. i assumed that was hook-up wire, and since my radio shack did not have 26-30 i got the closest thing; 22guage. does it matter? the tut says it does...that it can be a problem...but that's about it.

electrical tape, 600volts, 80c:think that's alright :/

desoldering braid: looks okay...

desoldering tool: tut calls it a solder sucker...but, i think it's the same...

and...that' is. the tut calls for more stuff like foam tape, but...i read the back of it, and it said it was for permanent installation, and...as i said...i'm not sure if the chip i get may be permanent. it also called for a multi-meter...do i really have to worry about this if a follow a tut step by step? and is there another way i can maybe "test" it? also called for tip tinner...i can just clean the tip of my solder with alchohol or something right? and a cleaning sponge...eh, w/e i have an old shirt...

and that's it. so...is my equipment okay? or will i need to special order some stuff? any help is appreciated.

They do have 30 gauge wire. it probably was not with the hook up wire though. it is called insulated wrapping wire.

yeah, thanks. the wire was really bothering me. the tut (http://modthatcube.pxn-os.com/content/solder/index.html) didn't really say what kind it was, but the picture is the same as the one on radioshacks webpage for "insulated wrapping wire".

however, it's under "hook-up wire". the "insulated wrappin wire" is in >cables, parts, and connectors>wires>hookup wire.

but...then i noticed the model number to see if maybe they just had different pictures for it...and...the one i bought (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049738&cp) is different than the other. (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062640&cp=2032058.2032227.2032239&parentPage=family)

so, uh...i guess i'm just gonna have to order it. eh, w/e, i'm probably gonna get the wiikey and that's not due out for a while. thanks for the help! one more thing, is the solder alright? it's this one (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062720&cp) but...again, the tut never really stated what "Flux Paste and/or Pre-Fluxed Solder" meant.

you may want to get the smaller diameter solder
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062711&cp=2032058.2032236.2032313&allCount=47&fbn=Type%2FSolder&f=PAD%2FProduct+Type%2FSolder&fbc=1&parentPage=family

also, they have the 30 gauge wire at my local radio shack. it is not with the hookup wire though. it was on the end of the isle.

thanks. i think i'm gonna have to order online. i read the review at the bottom of that link for flux, and it said, that it's the only one radioshack offers, and it's decent and it's worth using even if your wire has flux in it already. so...i might as well buy the standard rosin core wire AND the flux.

kk, thanks all :)

I dont ever use extra flux and have never had a problem. i know some people say its needed though.

heh, well...i'm a noob, and it IS my wii. so...don't want to short circuit it or anything:D and after all the tuts i've read, people swear by flux. i was gonna get the tip tinner, but...seems pretty "not-vital" to me :p

you can use solder to tin the tip. also make sure you practice before you try to solder on your system.
