View Full Version : Wiiconnect24 problems

I cannot get network services to work properly. I'll try to detail below the steps I've taken over the last month or so.
I configured my wii to access my wireless router using wep, channel 11. The connection test went fine. It then did a software update successfully. I downloaded the Opera browser, Everybody Votes, and used News and Weather successfully.
Then, I opened my wii to check my DVD chipset. During that process I removed the battery. When I re-assembled and turned on my wii, everything seemed to be ok. Both News and Weather worked. I then noticed the date/time had been reset, so I put them back to Feb 2007. After that, News worked fine - except that when it started it said "Last updated 2422425353.34" or some other ridiculously large number. I think using the News when the date was set wrong confused it. Using Weather would not work at all anymore, it just said it could not download the latest data.
Today, there was a thread posted on how to fix problems with wiiconnect, and I followed those instructions (back up mii's, save data, etc., do system memory format). After that process I re-configured my wii's network settings, the connection tests fine, and I re-downloaded the Internet and Voting channels. However, neither News or Weather will start. They both give the error "WiiConnect24 is currently turned off. Confirm your setting under Wii Options." In my settings WiiConnect is turned on.
Does anyone have any clue what I've done, or how to fix it?
As a side note, while my mii survived this process in my remote, Wii Sports lost all of his data - even after I restored the Wii Sports save game from my SD card. But my real problem is that I'd like to use News and Weather.

Try this again, but after you format the memory, try putting the battery back in again before you start the system back up. Someone on another site said they had success that way. Also, as far as the save games are concerned, you have to play the game once and create a new save before putting your previous saved game back in the Wii memory. I cannot be too sure about Wii Sports though because it is directly linked to a particular Mii. I have bolded where to change the step to give it a try. Before you do anything, TURN OFF WIICONNECT24. Make sure your settings reflect this.
1. Turn on Wii.
2. Back up your game saves to SD card. Save Mii's to Wiimote.
3. Turn off Wiiconnect24 in your settings.
4. Turn off Wii. Unplug Wii.
5. Take out battery in back of system.
6. Plug in Wii and turn on system.
7. Make sure Wiiconnect24 is still off and format Wii memory.
8. Put battery back in, turn system back on and setup all your settings.
9. Turn on Wiiconnect24 and check to make sure your news channel and forecast channel will again update and run as normal. Don’t forget you will have to set up your internet connection and time and date settings again.
10. That should get the updating back to normal.
11. If upon first insert of a disc, you get a read error. Unplug and plug back in the system. Everything should then be fine.
I hope this helps. It has fixed mine and a few others on other forums. It just seems the Wii memory is temperamental.

Unfortunately the steps above produced the same results as before. It's strange because when I have wiiconnect24 turned off, starting News or Weather tells me that you must have wiiconnect24 on and gives me error code 109139. However, when I turn wiiconnect24 on I get the same error message, but it does not give an error code at all.

Do you have Wiiconnet24 turned off for standby? I got the same message before I turned that setting back on.

I have Standby turned on as well... still the same behavior. It's pretty crazy, especially since I haven't done anything "odd" to my unit (burned the **** out of it like lots of the photos posted recently). All that I did was remove the battery.

6. Plug in Wii and turn on system.
7. Make sure Wiiconnect24 is still off and format Wii memory.
Odinfire, just curious why you have step 7 in the instructions above? The reason I ask is that I've observed the following strange behavior.
- Turn OFF wiiconnect24
- Shut down wii, unplug from wall
- Wait 5 - 10 seconds, plug it back in and turn it on
- Check settings, wiiconnect is still OFF.
The above sounds normal, but if I wait 15-20 mintues with the unit unplugged instead of a few seconds, when I turn it on the settings show wiiconnect24 is now ON!
So I guess I'm asking, when you did this procedure did wiiconnect24 turn itself back on, causing you to have to turn it off again at step 7?

I have the same problem as Grabb. I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Everything used to work fine...
If someone can figure this out I will be sooo grateful. I'm sick of trying different reformat procedures. I just want it back to normal.

^^ Same, I havent taken battery our or anything, was working fine. Disconnected my router while taking my PC to a LAN. Returned and now my Wii wont go online. Error code 52030, apparently a ip conflict according to posts on the net. I have tried all sorts of fixes and cannot get it back online.

Why don't you check the IP address of the Wii and the ip address of each system on your home network? I would think an ip conflict means multiple systems in your network have the same ip address. You could also just change your Wii's ip address to something else (only change the last digit and try to use a higher digit that is unlikely to otherwise be on your network - like 250).

grabb you ever find a solution?
Unfortunately no, I haven't. I am still unable ot connect to News or Weather, though system updates and shopping work fine. Attempting to run News with wiiconnec24 turned on tells me that "wiiconnect 24 is not enabled", with no error code given. If I turn off wiiconnect24, and then try to run News I get the exact same error, except this time I get the error code as well.
Odinfire's steps seem to have worked for several people both here and at wiinewz, but after trying them many times, and trying many slight variations of them, I am still stuck. I'm also sick of losing my Wiisports data each time I format the internal memory - even backup/restore of both savegames and mii's doesn't allow you to save your stats in wiisports. I called Nintendo and they acted like I was crazy for removing the battery. They said it could not be fixed without sending it back to them, and possibly being replaced.
I figure since my wii got into this state fairly easily (I didn't do anything other than remove the battery), surely this will happen to more people, and eventually a firmware update will correct it. Hope I'm correct...

Grabb, try this:
1- Backup any game saves on SD card and any Miis on a controller
2- Reformat Wii Internal memory ( Found on third page of Wii options)
3- Turn Wii back on and go through initial setup to completion (do not need to setup internet yet)
4- Turn Wii off and remove lithium battery panel along with battery (silver screw on bottom side of wii)
5- Turn Wii back on (with battery still removed) and again reformat internal memory
6- When Wii turns off after reformat, unplug power for ten minutes ( with battery still removed)
7- Plug Wii in, Turn Wii back on and again go through initial setup to completion (Battery still removed)
8- Enter your internet settings now, and run internet connection test
9- Go to WiiConnect 24 and make sure you have it set to ON, with Stand By also ON
10- Make sure you go to Internet USER Agreement and select ACCEPT
11- Now go to NEWS channel and hit start ( if all has gone well you should now be able to download update)
12- Go to weather channel, select start and go through setup. ( You should now get your weather update)
13- Re-install your game saves back onto Wii(you have to insert each game disc to re-install saves to wii)
14- Save your Mii's back to Wii from controller (you will have to create 1 new Mii first on Mii channel)
15- Turn Wii power off, then reinstall battery and battery panel ( make sure battery faces correct way)
I heard it from a guy over at nintendo forums and it worked PERFECT!

My system has software 2.0U, no matter how i format the memory, it always has the 2.0U software, it didnt work for me 3 times, i skipped the Mii and the game saves part, is that a big deal?
PhatheadWRX
03-16-2007, 11:14 AM
skipping the backup isn't a big deal, you'll just lose everything you have ever put on your wii.
the easy rundown of this procedure is to keep battery in and format, do initial setup only no internet, remove battery (wii off), format again, unplug for 10 minutes, turn on and set everything up, once it is all working put back in battery.
Commander, you formatted twice?

Just a question before I try this. What's the best way of taking out the battery without having the square-shaped nut falling out from inside of the Wii? I want to make sure it stays in its place so I won't have to open up my Wii again just to put that nut back in.

:D Hi All, :D
I also have a corrupt Wii News (I am guessing because the battery was removed)
I want to do this reformatting trick but I have a major concern;
Will my VC games transfer back onto my Wii without a problem?
Will I lose my virtual console points in the Wii Shop Channel?
Before I reformat the Wii gives me a warning message saying I won't be able to use my Channels after a format, even if I backed up to SD.... So I am guessing the wii # is reformatted and my VC games would not work, I also don't know if my Wii shop channel account would still work, and if I could possibly redownload the games and still retain my points on there...
Have any of you who formatted retained or lost your wii points, or tried to play any backed up VC games?

Hey again all. So I did the lenthgy reformatting trick where you format twice and take out the battery etc.
My wii remembered my wii store acct and I could redownload all my VC games
, the would not however transfer from sd that i had backed up to.
Also my points remained the same balance as before format.
A few things that may seem simple but i couldnt find anyone to confirm,... so hopefully this will help someone out.
just remember to backup gamesaves and dont even bother backing up all your VC games your gonna have to re download em

So after a reformat, the wii will let you just re-download the VC games from the shopping channel without charging you again? If so, that's awesome. How does the wii know who you are or how many VC points you have? Did you register the wii with nintendo? Just curious cause I just got the wii about a week ago and i'm waiting for my PICs to come in so I can chip it. I don't want to do anything with the system until it's chipped.

yeah the wii shop will remember what you have downloaded and any points as long as you do not remove your account in the shop.
Also my backed up VC and Internet Channel both transfered back from the SD fine. But it is nice to have the option to re-download if you can't.
LH, I have never had a problem with the little square nut falling off the screw for the battery cover? weird.
Confirmed that the instructions work on Pal Wii. Many thanks.

I have exactly the same problem. Very exactly. All is working except the Forecast Channel. I had the "WC24 off" issue, solved it, but since, all the channels are working, except the Forecast one which says "Unable to download the latest information."
I can't even configure my region or so. I click "Start", and then the update start immediately, stands for 15-20 sec and then tell me the "Can't download latest info" thingy...
As PhatheadWRX, I would love to get some help on this issue.

Thanks for this drsquirrel, unfortunately I've already tried this method twice, and still no go... :(
I think this method works perfectly for the "WC24 off" issue, but it doesn't seems to work with the "Unable to download the latest information." issue limited to the single Forecast Channel.
As I've stated in my first post, only the Forecast Channel doesn't work, other channels are working as expected.
So I'm pretty stuck with this issue, and didn't found any information on this specific one (although I've found many infomation on the "WC24 off" one).

Well people, let this be a lesson, modding isnt always a win win situation.
Im over my Wii forcast, news and everyone votes not working problem.
It hurts, but having that stack of Burned DVD-Rs filled with Wii games makes up for it. I still got opera which is hot!!! just make favorites for weather.com and news.google.com. sure the News channel looks nicer but oh well.
Now we just have to hope that the big N will update to the latest opera mini app so we can get more flash video.

oops you dont have a mod and your wii forecast and news doesnt work? did you remove the battery? This usualy happens to those that mod their system and dont shut off wii connect before pulling the battery.
I havent looked in a while but I saw no mention of turning off Wii connect before installing a mod chip on any mod chip manufactures web site. Totaly irked me.

That's absolutely right, I removed the battery once (without disabling WC24, as I didn't know).

Try this:
1) Try the battery + formating trick. If it doens't work continue to step 2.
2) Turn off Wii Connect24 the settings menu
2) Leave the battery out for a week, continue to use the Wii but unplug it from the power point when you finish playing with it.
3) After a week, if you have wiikey installed. Get the config disk and turn off region override.
4) Turn on Wii Connect 24
5) Test Wii News and Wii Forecast.
6) If it all works, put the battery back in to the Wii and turn region override back on etc.

I'm surprised no one at nintendo is aware of this problem or issued a fix. This has nothing to do with a mod chip, as it only emulates the dvd drive.

Yep, I started this thread way back in February and still haven't fixed it. I've tried every suggestion posted here, as well as in the wiinewz forums without any luck. My problem started a week before I installed a mod chip, so I'm certain that this issue can and is happening to non-modded wii owners. I've been disappointed that the Nintendo firmware updates haven't addressed this problem. Discussion of this problem in the official Nintendo forums reveals that it has happened to some people (anyone who's removed the battery) - and the only solution has been to send it back to Nintendo for repair/replacement. 5 months without news and weather has kind of sucked.

I'm surprised no one at nintendo is aware of this problem or issued a fix. This has nothing to do with a mod chip, as it only emulates the dvd drive.
Very annoying issue to say the least.
PS. I took the battery out for 5 minutes, put it back in, and my date/time are still correct. Strange.
Download a copy of the config disk from the website.
When you have exhausted all attempts to fix this problem, you should try what i have suggested.

Please make sure that the web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the pag. Make sure your internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working. Need help? Open the opera help. Go to opera's on-line support desk.
