I'm going to attempt this tomorrow, it will be my first every solder job. Brave or stupid, I'll let you know.
Before I go ahead I want to make sure I have all the correct tools and wanted to know if anyone knows the best wire to get from maplin?
cheers

Hey gnasher, I went and bought a 25 metre reel of 0.1/10 equipment wire from maplin (0.1cm, 10 strands). It is a flexible cable that works well, probably the most suitable one from Maplin. While you are there pick up a miniature throw switch for the upgrade enable. They mount really well.
Let me know if you want any other advice.

Oh, also pick up some heatshrink for connecting the wires to the switch. Makes everything look so much more professional!
Personally if it is your first solder job, I would get some old circuit board (for example an old calculator) and see how steady you are soldering small wires onto existing solder points.
My advice would be to put as little solder on as possible. I've seen pictures on this forum of people putting huge globs of solder on things, and that can't be good.
Also, don't keep the soldering iron on the DVD drive too long as it might damage other components (see the thread about blown fuses).
And of course, be very careful with the DVD ribbon cable when taking it apart!!
Solder can be unpredictable and it takes a bit of practice to get it right. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, I will play with my old PS2 first :D
I have a tri-wing screw driver thankfully. A 25W iron with a small tip, some solder which contains lead so was going to get some lead free tonight, along with db9 male x 3 and a db9 female (2 of just incase) Will also get some heatshrink and a mini switch.
Does anywhere sale a bag of nerves, think I might need a top up!
