I've seen all these cubes all over the place so how about a thread where you can post your sucessfully modded cubes. Sorry I can't start. My cube is in pieces. And I bet admins would appreciate if you link to a hosted picture rather than attaching it. They have limited webspace and I have a feeling this thread will get crouded.

The colors are Citadel colors, made for plastic figures such as warhammer etc... the color doesnt look so neat now but once i get the lack on it will shine as a baby butt :) you should be able to find em in hobby stores that sells warhammer stuff :)
I dont know if this is the best color out there to use, but i used what i had and sofar its working great, no i did not do all the white painting with that small tube of white, i used their spray color to do so :)

hi.

i'm kind of new to all this, and i have a couple of questions because i'm planning to mod my cube in the future, maybe after i have bought some large dvd-r replacement case.

first of all, where do you take the power from for the led's? is it from the fan or is it someplace else?

second, what is an SD adapter?

third (:P), what kind of paint is useable to paint the case? spray?

forth, if i would cut in the case in some way, what would be the best way to do that?

and that's about all i think..

thanks for any help i can get :)

Man Duey2k, that white Cube is great looking!!

ROFLMyWaffle
05-04-2005, 08:00 PM
First, I took mine below the connector when the motherboard/power conversion board plugs in. Below the fan would work also. If you want them to stay on while the cube is off, then you would use where the power comes in from the socket.

Second, a cartridge that plugs in a memory card slot that allows you to hook an SD memory card (from like a computer or camera but must be SD) into your cube. I think they only work on some games though. They don't work like regular memory cards. I believe www.lik-sang.com sells them. Most people use them to boot dol's.

Third, I hear Vynal Dye works. It comes in a spray paint can and just sprays on. I hear it leaves a great color without filling in the lettering like the words RESET, and POWER on the top. I guess it soaks in or dyes and evaporates. I haven't tried it yet though.

Fourth, A dremel or any similar rotary tool (I suggest the craftsman compact rotary tool)

thanks alot for your help roflmywaffle :)
just a followup question, if i take power from where it comes in from the socket, is there any danger of it affecting the game cube performance? i mean, could it hurt my gamecube in any way?

No I did some serious stresstesting on the gc's power adapter. You can safely take 1000mA for your own modding needs, that's enough for 150 led's, so there is nothing to be concerned of :)

Got quite a nice finish with my Dremel and some wet and dry paper.

Highly recommend this mod - its simple and allows you to have a clothed (as opposed to naked) cube and use full size media without using one of those pish replacement tops.

Ok, here are some thoughts for the motor idea. This would make a top notch mod, but will end up being expensive. So here's my ideas.

First of all, snag one of these (http://www.electronickits.com/kit/complete/elec/ck1616.htm). We will probably be using all 4 of these buttons. These are just ideas though, I have no idea if they would actually work. Lets start with the power. Solder the 12v+ on the board to the 12v+ on the cube (the "stand by" power or where the power adapter connector is soldered to the fan assembly board) and the - to the -.

Next, button number 1. Set it's jumper to latching and solder a wire to each of the points on the gc power button and screw them down on button 1 nc and com.

Now, button number 2. Set it's jumper to momentary and solder a wire to each of the points on the reset switch (P.S: One to the one with the noticably different trace and one to any of the other 3). Screw those wires down to button 2 nc and com

The next part I'm unsure if it would work. Grab one of these (http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&category%5Fname=CTLG%5F011%5F002%5F007%5F003&product%5Fid=273%2D256)
from your local R$. I'm not telling you step-by-step how to do this, because I've never done it and am just throwing out some ideas. Anyway, find some way to rig it into the opening mech ( I'm guessing the best way would be the mini cog). Then, you would need to do some research to limit 400 mA going to the motor and some research to make a circuit so that when 1 button is pressed, the current flows in one direction, and when the other is pressed, it flows in the opposite direction.

With this information, you would rig up button 3 nc and com to the button on the circuit that makes it flow forward and button 4 nc and com to the button on the circuit that makes it flow in reverse. Then set those jumpers to momentary.

Now lets sum this all up to what it will do if it works properly. When button 1 is pressed, the gamecube will turn on. Press it again and it will turn off. When button 2 is pressed, it will open the circuit temporarly making it similar to a press of the reset switch. When button 3 is held down, if the rf reciever board works the way i think it does, it will hold the motor on and the lid will close. Then release the button when it is closed all the way (you may run into problems if you hold it too long, the motor might break off of the cog because it is trying to move farther than it can). Same goes with button 4 when held, only if the current is reversed, it should open the lid up. May experience the same problems as 3.

Those are just my ideas. Not tested and may not even work. I take no responsibility to damage done from these ideas.

ROFLMyWaffle - Damn that sounds complex. I was thinking of wiring a small motor upto the cog inside the lid mech and seeing if I could wire it to a switch that would be hidden under the old eject button.

The switch I had in mind would be a magical one that could reverse the current and know when to do so...

<sticks to lifting the lid by hand...for now> :D

Hey hey now, there's much more to American "humour" (I actually like it better your way:)) than friends - ick. We got Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, Simpsons, I could go on and on. But you guys got Monty Python, he's the King.

Hey man, I like Roseanne...not Roseanne herself, but it's a good show.

Hmmm...I'm a literature major and I've got to say that I like more British writers than American writers. You got Swift, Pope, Austin, Wordsworth, Elliot, Keats, Dickens, etc. But we got Poe (even though he came from Britain, we claimed him;)), Thoreau, Emerson, Hemmingway, Salinger, etc. Eh, maybe it's a toss-up. Swift and Thoreau are my favorites though:)

Speaking of the difference in spelling, it's funny because I refuse to spell "grey" with an "a" like it's spelled in America. I'm not really sure why but I've always liked how it looks better with an "e" - lol

Speaking of the difference in spelling, it's funny because I refuse to spell "grey" with an "a" like it's spelled in America. I'm not really sure why but I've always liked how it looks better with an "e" - lol

I'm afraid my cube isn't modded more than having the Viper installed and the hushtrap case. But for those of you that molested your stock cases and ruined the eject, couldn't that be replaced by a bit of metal and an electro magnet with an on/off switch? Dunno if that would drain too muc power from the system though, but that's something I would try.

Haha, no worries mate, I wasn't insulted. We an IT-country with alot of cable and the damn kids start learning english at 8 or 9 in school.

I skimmed through the pics, but was your magnet an electro-magnet? I was imaging something that could be turned on/off at will.

Heres a little more of what i just finished (if you can call it that) to the platinum cube I posted earlier. Read back to see what I had done to it at that stage. Now with this new release.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v647/ROFLMyWaffle/Gamecube/redcube.jpg

Added:
-Took the plexi part off that custom jewel from the last stage and put it in alone.
-Cut a hole where the jewel was to see the disc spinning
-And ofcourse, RED VINYL DYE! (Not yet completed. The bottom part doesn't match as you can see due to the fact that I gave it a thick coat. I can't give it another as I got paint on the porch of this apartment we're renting. Now I've got about 5 hours of sanding to do on the porch :( )

Another little mod you can see is my modded memory card. I cut off the part where the back label is and put 2 leds inside to shine through. When that's done, I'm going to put a label on so it kind of back lights the label.

Keep up the modding!

gulliver
05-23-2005, 12:11 PM
That looks really good. Did you have to do any sanding or priming? Do you need to add a clear coat when you're using vinyl dye?

ROFLMyWaffle
05-23-2005, 12:26 PM
Nope, no sanding, no clear coat. All you do is dissassemble it, tape up parts not to be painted (the gears that open it), clean it good with mild soap and a toothbrush or equivalent. And start painting! Make sure you lay down VERY THIN even coats. It should take about 10 to cover all of the previous paint. This goes quick though cuz the coats dry in a matter of minutes. I can't stress enough how thin they need to be. I got lazy and used too thick of coats on the bottom and it turned out flatter and brighter. I had to halt work... *COUGH Because of some "difficulties" (read back a few posts). This site kind of shows you how thin your coats need to be.....
http://case-mods.linear1.org/superman-case-mod/
BUT READ. The first shot is after 1 layer, the second I believe is AFTER 8. SO THIN LAYERS! TRUST ME! And also, I do NOT recommend taping up the stickers. You'll get parts where the label is painted and spots where the case is unpainted. If you take your time, they're completely reusable. You'll regret it if you don't take them off. I believe that's about it. All the best.....

EDIT: Also, i used the red Duplicolor Vinyl coating from Advanced Auto Parts. It's good stuff

gulliver
05-23-2005, 01:02 PM

Just got my tripod. To test out it's stability, I took some more pics of my red cube. Didn't wanna post too many pics so I threw them together as an animated gif. Kinda defeats the purpose because gif=less quality. These don't show off the leds, but they do show you that it's just the front bottom that's got an uneven coat. The rest matches pretty well. Enjoy!

Pics coming soon...

I have a (originally) jet black cube that's been 'upgraded' with Qoob Pro 1.3a, a smoke clear case, and four wavebirds with the LEDs matching the LEDs of their respective ports(white, blue, green, red). So everyone who's playing can just check the receiver with their controller and BOOM! easy to distinguish.

As I said, pics are coming soon, my digicam is in pieces right now...
:D

ROFLMyWaffle
06-21-2005, 02:43 PM
wow. Sounds really cool. I put a wavebird reciever in my cube. And I got an idea, but it was too late to do it (or at least I was too lazy to pull it back out). But rig up led's to the back power (where the fan connects) and rig up a relay so when the wavebird gets a signal, the light in the port comes on. You'd need a relay because I don't think the actual wavebird led would be bright enough nor the points be powerful enough to support a bright led.

dsltech_dude
06-21-2005, 02:53 PM
Yeah, I'm trying to get up the courage to crack open my cube again and put the receivers internally. But with a qoob pro, I don't think you can fit all 4 receivers INSIDE the case. Pretty cool if it's possible though!

for the internal recievers ,ive done it a while ago .works great u can even put a regular controller in the port 1 as long as your wavebird is not on.the only porblem with this mod is you cant play gba connected games.you most likely have to put a relay, other then that works great.
