View Full Version : Viper Extreme outperforms my Qoob Pro?

Hello all:

I have a launch Cube with a Qoob Pro installed and run Qoob BIOS 1.3c. My POT was moved back from 560 to 230. For months, I've had no problems.

Now, my friend's backups - who uses a Viper Extreme with Cobra 1.5 BIOS - will work on his GC flawlessly, but won't work on mine.

I've seen three different issues with three different games.

1. Chibi-Robo!
On my GC, I constantly see small green and white rectangles along the bottom of my TV screen. The game plays fine, and never freezes up, but it's an annoying problem and really shouldn't happen.

2. GUN
On my GC, it doesn't even boot up. The GC tries to read the disc, clicks and then freezes on a black screen.

3. Medal of Honor: Frontline
On my GC, the entire screen goes bright green right before running. This will happen for a second or two and then the game will run fine after that, unless I activate a cheat. Once any cheat is on, the game will freeze on that green screen. On the Viper Extreme GC my friend has, he doesn't even get the momentary green screen.

So...I hope that make sense.

Basically, I want to know why this could be happening. What can I do to my GC to resolve this issue?

I have about 50 other backups that work properly - some US NTSC, some PAL. Also, I've tried to use GCOS 1.5 and 1.X. They don't work at all.

I hope someone can help me.

Gamecubes are individuals when it comes to their optical drives. It could be that your friends GC has a 'more compatible' optical drive than you, meaning that your drive is pickier in what media it will read correctly. Try burning the game on a media you know for sure will be readable in your GC. For example, my GC works 100% only with RITEK G02 and G04 media. BTW you didn't mention whether you have a case for using 12cm media or the original case which can use only mini-DVD's? Full sized DVD's usually work better than minis. Hope this helps... ;)

I have a case mod in place, and all my back-ups are on 12cm LEGACY discs.

I've had no problem with the media to this point.

Ritek's are hard to come by out here, and I haven't had the need to hunt them down...until now.

I'll see what I can do. Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it.

maybe a little off topic but I tried both chips on my gamecube and I couldn't even get the damn viper to work what so ever so I unsoldered it and put the qoob pro in and it works great.:D

Hmmm...

Mind sharing the details on your Cube?

Which region?
How old is it?
Which BIOSes did you use?
What media are your backups burnt on?
Do you know what your POT is set to?

Also, in case you use Action Replay with your Qoob chip, do you have any trouble activating cheats on EA-developed games like Medal of Honor, SSX and Everything or Nothing?

I've never heard of this problem, and hope I never encounter it.. I'd recommend trying all the different Bios' - Qoob Pro 1.3a, 1.3b4, 1.3c, GCOS1.5F...
If none of them read with all sorts and combinations of settings.. just try reburning those ISOS again, onto good media... It might be that your friend's GameCube has an easier time reading blanks than yours.. maybe it's newer, so doesn't need THE BEST media, in a sense....
