Actually, this is supported by Sony. I haven't been able to find any directions in any of the manuals, but on the back of at least Wipeout and Twisted Metal down in the fine print it says "this game supports multiplayer with one copy of the game" or something close. I don't have my PSP with me atm or I'd look. Since it doesn't say anything about the "Game Sharing" option on the PSP menu and doesn't work if you try to use that we just figured out that this is what they meant. I wasn't aware other people weren't figuring this out or I might have let everyone know about it when we noticed a couple weeks ago.

haha , well it is very unusual but at the same time a very cool feature to have - As wise people once said 'it's good to play together'.

Several reports have said that 'Sony may attempt to block this in the future' - I guess they must be wrong

Who knows. They may try to block it in the future, and I found it odd that neither the PSP or game manual said anything about how to do it. Oddly enough I only actually tried to get it working on Twisted Metal as well, but I'm now looking at my Wipeout case and it's definitely on there. In the little boxed section below how many players, wi-fi support, and memory requirements it says, "Only one copy of the game for host only may be required for certain Wi-Fi multiplayer functionality. Visit www.us.playstation.com/psp or consult your PSP system manual for full details." I found this particularly interesting because it was on Wipeout and Twisted Metal but not Lumines, so it's not something they print regardless of title functionality.

I think it works like the DS Download play. And just some games have that option because you need to do some other coding than streaming a network game wireless. Too much work for some companies. ;)

From my expirience, barely anybody ever used the multiplayer support for handheld consoles specifically for the reason that everyone needed a copy of the game, this kind of multiplayer might actually boost game sales for companies as opposed to the other system where multiplayer was barely a feature at all, I'd think the only multiplayer games not like this will be ones that can't support it or, as stan64 mentioned, games made by people too lazy to code wi-fi single game playability. It would seem like sony has good support for this kind of stuff built into their libraries seeing as games are already using it, so laziness will probably not outweigh the benefits of selling a game with this great functionality, it also promotes the buying of more PSP's too probably.

My research isn't very thorough, but I have a good feeling most people who've owned a gameboy in the past have never owned or even used a gameboy linker cable.

I'm all for multiplayer and have linked all my GameBoys on the go, even from the BW time. =)

With GBA there were alot of Single Pack games and it was easier to meet out and play alot of games. ^^

DS is very good at the single pack part. Fast load times. Great games. Great fun.

I only played Lumines multiplayer on PSP. But on DS I have managed to play almost all interesting titles in multiplayer. ^^

I just got access to another PSP and I found out you can get games, at least wipeout pure, to work on more than one unit with only one disc. I've only tried it wth 2 players but it'll probably work up to 8 players. On the PSP you're going to host the game on (and every other PSP that's going to play but won't be the last player that winds up with the disc) disable all the in game music tracks, then host the game and pull the disc out. (it'll bring up the "do you want to quit" menu, just select no ) then join the game with every PSP that's going to play and give the disc back to the host to start the game. As the game loads all the PSP's without discs will sit in the loading screen and the host machine will load into the race and say waiting for player, pull the disc out and load it up on every other PSP untill the race is ready to go. I only tested this with 2 players so far but it works great.

I tried this with THUG and it disconnects right away, but I might be doing something wrong.

I'm making a list type thing over at psp 411, here's what I entered over there

Wipeout Pure:
Host a game, remove the UMD so others can join the game, put the UMD back in the host PSP and start the race, Wipeout pure will say "waiting for player", now remove the UMD from the host PSP and load up the level data on the other PSP's, after everybodies loaded in the race will begin.
All music tracks need to be disabled for any PSP that won't have a UMD disc during gameplay (if you plan on playing tournaments the disc will wind up in a different PSP every race so disable it on all of them)

Tony Hawx Underground 2:
This games's a little tricky to get working, Host a multiplayer game, the host machine will enter the free skate mode. Now remove the UMD from the host PSP and join the game on another PSP (it might work for more than one player but each player has to join 1 at a time) after you select "join game" a dialog will come up that says "joining game", on the host PSP a message will appear saying "XXX is joining the game" at this point, take the UMD out of the PSP that's joining and put it back into the host PSP (I assume this is for loading the player model for the joining player) the message will go away and as soon as it does put the disk back into the PSP that's joining the game. The game should now load in for the player joining the game. Unlike wipeout, THUG2 will time out here if you're not quick enough swapping the discs, so you have to pay attention when it's joining and switch the discs quickly.

I disabled music and "special sounds" on both PSP's I tested this with, but I'm not sure it's necissary like it is for wipeout. Anybody with any new information about 1 disc multiplayer with these games or other games would be great.

Sony won't block this feature, as it's meant to demo games. Game makers have the option to make a demo that will be able test their games, and hopefully sell more games. I spoke with a Sony rep and he said that it is indeed make to parallel the DS Dowload play feature on the DS. We can't be having Nintendo with features that the crazy expensive PSP wouldn't have.. besides, if it's got WiFi, USE IT!!!

I tried Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory, it would've worked but I can't find a way to disable the music and the PSP goes to a "can't read disc" screen until you put the game in.

Has anybody tried this with other games?
