Identify the DVD chip using the Wii's serial number
Forget about the purchase date or the checksum digit in the box.
It seems the first part of the serial number holds the key to knowing if you have the incompatible D2B chip or not.
Check your serial number against the tables below.
Europe
GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LEH 100XXXXX
- LEH 101XXXXX
- LEH 102XXXXX
- LEH 103XXXXX
- LEH 104XXXXX
- LEH 105XXXXX
- LEH 106XXXXX
- LEH 107XXXXX
- LEH 108XXXXX
- LEH 10812XXX
- LEH 1085XXXX
- LEH 1089XXXX
- LEH 1091XXXX
- LEH 109128XX
- LEH 109166XX
- LEH 10979XXX
GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
- LEH 10889XXX
- LEH 1089XXXX
- LEH 109225XX
- LEH 10924XXX
- LEH 1100XXXX
- LEH 1101XXXX
- LEH 1104XXXX
For European models it seems the D2B chip was introduced somewhere between LEH 1088XXXX and LEH 1097XXXX.
If your serial is below LEH 1088XXXX there is a 98% chance you don't have the D2B chip.
I your serial is between LEH 1088XXXX and LEH 1097XXXX the chance you have the D2B chip is about 50%.
If your serial is above LEH 1097XXXX there is a 98% chance you have the D2B chip.
North America
GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LU 100XXXXXX
- LU 101XXXXXX
- LU 102XXXXXX
- LU 103XXXXXX
- LU 104XXXXXX
- LU 1050XXXXX
- LU 300XXXXXX
- LU 301XXXXXX
- LU 302XXXXXX
- LU 303XXXXXX
- LU 304XXXXXX
- LU 305XXXXXX
- LU 306XXXXXX
- LU 3066XXXXX
- LU 30677XXXX
- LU 502XXXXXX
- LU 503XXXXXX
- LU 504XXXXXX
- LU 505XXXXXX
- LU 506XXXXXX
- LU 5074XXXXX
- LU 5077XXXXX
GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
- LU 1047XXXXX
- LU 10510XXXX
- LU 1054XXXXX
- LU 3070XXXXX
- LU 3072XXXXX
- LU 3074XXXXX
- LU 50853XXXX
- LU 5089XXXXX
- LU 5092XXXXX
- LU 5094XXXXX
- LU 5095XXXXX
For North-America it appears that there are three different ranges in use (LU1/LU3/LU5).
Its possible that each range is used in a different area, factory or language pack.
Each range will have a number where the D2B chip is introduced.
For LU1 this seems to be around LU 104XXXXXX and LU 105XXXXXX.
For LU3 its between LU30667XXXX and LU3070XXXXX and
for LU5 its somewhere between LU 5077XXXXX and LU50853XXXX.
Australia
GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LAH 10067XXX
Japan
GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
- LJH 102XXXXX
GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
- LJH 1038XXXX
I'm still working on the other regions (Australia/Asia etc)
Keep in mind that it is possible that there are different factories or production lines that use different stocks.
Therefore the above tables could be wrong at some points.
It is also possible that a console's DVD initially failed the Quality Checks and has been shipped with a new DVD
player that has the D2B chip. Thiswould only apply to serials that are in the danger zone.
However, so far the serial number seems to give a reasonable indication of what chip is inside your console.
Please, only post if you have a serial number that can narrow down these ranges and you can confirm the chip type.

Okay forgive me, but I'm somewhat confused...
My serial is LU 1052XXXXX
So this means that I may or may not have a D2B chip (basically the chip was somewhere put into production within the LU1 range, but it's not confirmed exactly where)? I would just open my wii but I don't have a tri wing screwdriver at the moment.

Mine is a LU 102********. I got mine on Launch day! Most likely I don't have it.
Vixen
02-09-2007, 03:21 AM
Correct.
LU 1050XXXXX and lower numbers have been confirmed to contain a DMS or D2A chip while LU 1054XXXXX and higher numbers contain the D2B.
So the introduction of the D2B chip appears to be somewhere between 1050 and 1054. Hopefully we can narrow this down by checking some more wii's.

Felt like chiming in, so I decided to register to the forums! ;)
Mine is LU5029XXXXX (N. America) so I guess that can be added to the GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A range. Haven't opened up my Wii, but I am assuming that since it is an early entry into the LU5 campaign, it should be safe (and I bought it 2 weeks before Xmas).
Excellent first post, Vixen! Saved me the trouble of prematurely opening up the Wii to confirm something I was pretty sure of anyway!

They don't have every serial on the list. Yours is between 306x which is good and 3072 which is bad. You need to open up you wii and find out so they can narrow the list down.
If its good then we know that the bad ones start somewere between 3070 and 3072 if its bad than we know the bad ones start somewere between 306x and 3070 which is narrawed down a little from what it was.
I think some people are confused about what this list is.

Correct, your serial number is in the danger zone until we have verified more boxes.
MINES lu-5024 and isn't there, got it launch day nort America
Your number is below LU 503X which is in the list. So your on the safe side. eg. DMS chip.
why is LEH 109XXXXX in both tables for Europe?
Caused by reports from people who did not give the next digit. We could have had a tighter range if they provided more digits of their serial.

All you people have to do is buy a cheap mini screwdriver. Mine was .70 cents at Sears. Use a dremel to shave off the wings leaving just 2 that make a V. This is enough to remove the screws in the Wii. I hear the bic pen trick is working. Some dont even have the tri wing screws from what I read so check as well.

Wait a sec....lol, Mine says LU504......its not listed....LU503 and then LU505. I got skipped lol.
You didn't get skipped. No one with a SN starting with LU504 has been able/interested/willing to open their console and post what chip they have. The list is a work in progress.
All you folks looking at the list and wondering why your specific serial number range is isn't listed, here's your answer:
We need more data......
You can't make sweeping generalizations about what SNs contain what chip with out a significant number (more than the 20 or so listed at the time of this post) of people willing to actually open their console and verify the chip/SN relationship.
Only when this list has been expanded for many many consoles (if even then) will we have a clear understanding of the relationship between SN and DVD chipset.
Keep opening your consoles and reporting your findings. Soon we should be able to predict with relative certainty what chipset one might find knowing the region and SN.
Thanks for contributing, and Vixen, thanks again!

My serial is LU1047****** but i HAVE A D2B chip. Its shown on the chart as D2a. Please just open your consoles people.
As said before, its possible that there are multiple assembly lines, eg. guy on the left assembles with old stock while guy on the right assembles with new stock.. Therefore there might be a range that has mixed chips.
Another possibility is that your console failed final quality control checks and got a new dvd player but because of delays it was the new model.
More reports should reveal all that.
List has been updated..

Just opened my Wii and I will confirm;
Australia
GC2 - DMS
- LAH 10067XXX[4]
Wii purchased couple days before xmas.
Cheers
I opened my Wii just to find out that this post is inaccurate:
Serial is LEH10889XXX6.
According to the chart, I shouldn't have a D2B-Chipset. However the chip is clearly labeled GC2-D2B.
It looks different than the screenshots (http://www.teamcyclops.com/chipsets.jpg), for example it has no Panasonic label. I took a picture in case anyone is interested but I guess its just the same chip without the label.
So in conclusion: some late LEH108XXXXX6 are indeed D2B. Sucks to be me.
Maybe I'll get an aware for having the D2B with the lowest serial :)
PS: Bought a few days ago, I don't see how that matters though.
Sorry for crossposting, had posted to the wrong thread at first.

God damn! Stupid people are breeding at an alarming rate! If not for that to say, I wouldn't have posted in this thread. You see, I got the dms chip and my serial is in a clear range. SO I DO NOT NEED TO POST HERE. "Woo-hoo time to order a chip!" We don't give a flying monkey's cheeky ass, if you don't have something to contribute, don't pollute! Call me a hypocrite still if you must...
And now for the survey: What's more annoying?
A) Person A chimes in to tell us he has a dms when his serial is not in question.
B) Person B chimes in to say his serial is in question but has no ability/desire/reading comprehension skills to find out.
Well I hope you're not refering to me, because I'm not part of either of these groups.
My serial clearly is in the doubt zone and I opened my Wii up just to find out and contribute (and because I am planning to mod it).
As reported earlier, my finding indicates that some LEH108 are D2B. I even posted almost my entire serial to help pinpoint the switch to D2B.

No confirmation, only speculation. Open it up and tell US!!!
Ok I have a Pal Wii, bought it brand new last saturday (so 1 week ago).
Serial LEH1089XXXX8
After reading the serials listed, I went and bought a Cylowiz today and a triwing, and when I got home at 3am I decided to open the Wii up and just hope the info on here was correct.
And I am pleased to say it was, I have the DMS in mine, and the console has now been chipped :D
Cheers for the info, really appreciate it.

Identify the DVD chip using the Wii's serial number
...
North America
GC2 - DMS or GC2R - D2A (Compatible with first generation mod chips)
...
- LU 305XXXXXX
- LU 306XXXXXX
- LU 3066XXXXX
- LU 30677XXXX
...
GC2R - D2B (Incompatible with first generation mod chips)
...
- LU 3070XXXXX
- LU 3072XXXXX
- LU 3074XXXXX
...
For LU3 its between LU30667XXXX and LU3070XXXXX and
for LU5 its somewhere between LU 5077XXXXX and LU50853XXXX.
....
SaRaH
Anyone have any experience with a LU 3068xxxx ?!? From the serials given, it looks like it would be safe (306xxx seems ok, 307xxx seem bad) but the message above says LU30667xxx - to LU3070xxx is bad.
Let me know. Thanks.

my english is bad. I ment without unpacking the wii, getting it out of the box, for instance when you are in the shop
I'm not certain, but I think he meant you can clearly see the serial from the outside of the box. Meaning, you can see the serial before you buy the Wii. This is meant so retailers don't get scammed by the ol' buy-n-swap.

Don't know about the WiiKey but unless there are some funny goings on at the manufacturing plants I'd assume a 1224 has to be the same or "earlier" than a 1225.
I'd guess D2B and nnothing chopped but obviously nothings 100% until you physically see it.
I'm using PIC 12F675's running Yaosm 1.7 instead of the WiiKey and can't say I have any cause for complaint :D

No. It's impossible to confirm anything until you strip off the cover and look inside.
The facts point to your serial number being below the one I just modded so should therefore have earlier and not later hardware inside, however I modded that with a PIC 12F675 and YAOSM code which works absolutely fine for me.
The contacts for using the WiiKey were there just I never tried it...no need as the open source chip did the job fine.

Narrows it now between LEH 1225 and LEH 1248 so a reasonable assumption is if you get a serial nearer the 1225 end it should be ok but nearer the higher end is a higher risk of cut pins.
All we need now is someone to post between these numbers so we can continue narrowing the list.

Hey Shane,
I talked to www.ozmodchips.com a couple of days ago.
This is the deal. Anything below LAH1016 is fine, Anything above has 3 legs pushed in. He said that EB games are stocking the new ones aussie wide. I'm pretty sure they have stock left - so it might be better to get one premodded.

the only way you are going to find out if the legs are cut, is to open up the console.
the wii does not have a security sticker on it so the store you got it from wont know if you have opened it, as long as you take your time and do it properly.

The Wii has some stickers which can easily be messed up when you remove them. To an untrained assistant the console would look fine. To someone who knew what was going on they may be able to tell the unit has been opened. Also down to how cool you act to say you didn't open it though.

that's actually kind of interesting. it's only been 3 months passed, and yet at the time you managed to get a Wii with D2B chipset.........maybe there's some hope of my having a D2B also even though i got mine this month.........

It would be better with a Wii where the legs aren't cutted. It means you have to grind into the drive-chip, to find the legs and requires a fair bit of skill.
LU3174 bought on 8/1/07 at Nintendo World Store. 3 legs cut.

Just bought mine (US)... LU524XXXXX... any advise? downloading the dvds is easy, but buying a modchip is one thing (thanks to the feds, not easy or safe), then soldering it in may be really hard, then to top it all off, it may not even work?
is my skepticism well warranted?

Bought an LEH1145XXXXX this week in Germany, gona have one of the local mod companies put Cyclowiz in it hope there won't be problems. Now here is the question: should I update Wii over internet before sending it to moders? I heard some update bricked Wiis for some people should I do it while I still have warranty so I can get a new one in case the update goes wrong?

Currently no modchip supports the D2C chip, at least not yet, but give them time and im sure every modchip will support it, or at least they will come out with a new modchip that does support it.

Your Drive Chip is most likely GC2-D2B.
Your Drive Pins are most likely not cut.
I have a cyclowiz v2 that's not installed yet.
# CycloWiz is compatible with Wii drives with the DMS chipset
# CycloWiz is compatible with Wii drives with the D2A chipset
# CycloWiz is compatible with Wii drives with the D2B chipset
Please tell me it's compatible.

What does this mean?
"Your Drive Chip is most likely GC2-D2B.
Your Drive Pins are most likely not cut."
Drive pins not cut means I can solder easier?
How can I guarantee a site sells 2nd gen chips, etc, etc?
Thanks.

Yes no cut means its real easy to solder the chip, just 6 wires if you use the wiikit, which you can get from divineo.cn, it says no stock because this week is inventory at divineo.cn, so wait a week to order, i ordered from them and it took a about 5-6 days to get to me in the States, west coast that is.

this is what I seen for mine ..
Your Drive Chip is most likely GC2-D2B.
Your Drive Pins are most likely cut
I been doing mods on ps1's ps2's xbox's and 360's for years now
I know I am making this a lot harder than it is..
Does this mean I can use the original wiikey chip ? ---> GC2-D2B.
and the drive pins most likely being cut is just a warning ? I really do not like the idea of taking a dremel to a board is their another modchip I can use if the legs are in fact cut ?
I have not opened it as of yet so I do not know for sure if they are cut
the number is lu5176xxxx would like to get a solid answer to a simple question :")

yes...I see that now ... but, until I open it I cannot know for sure if the legs are cut or not..... if they are "cut" is there a mod chip I can use instead of the wiikey I really do not want to cut into the chip if the legs are in fact cut.

With the new Wii chipset having three pins missing (known as D2C), people have been wondering how will this now affect modchip installations. Here is a tutorial that shows you how to remove some of the chipset casing to expose the three pins on the D2C chipset.

does anyone happen to know if I can chip a LU33980xxxx? I've checked the 'tracker' but all I get is a 50/50 response. I'm hoping to use either a wasabi or d2pro9. If anyone could shed some light on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.
