View Full Version : Epic: Gears of War cost Just $9 Million
In a recent interview, Epic's Mark Rein let slip that the TRIPLE PLATINUM Gears of War only cost around $9 million to take. People are always complaining about the high cost to develop games these days, and Rein says they should just license their technology.
In an interview with Wired he said, “We spent less than $10 million to make Gears of War. People are always saying that making next-generation games is really expensive, and we're saying, you should license our technology."
Rein, never one to pass up an opportunity to promote Epic’s successful engine, added that persuading companies that Unreal Engine 3 is more than just about shooters is one of the challenges of his job “Imagination is the biggest barrier,” he said. “When I get asked, can you do this kind of game, that kind of game. Yeah, you can do all kinds of games. You just have to use your imagination. So we're really good at helping our licensees figure out how to attack problems and do things that we're not even doing in our own games.

So what are the chances that we'd could see a Price-Drop for this Game?!
I mean something like a Best-Of, Platinum Edition?
It seems hard to justify having to drop nearly €70.00(EUR), for a Game that only had so much Developer Costs.
Selling Content at more reasonable Prices, would probably do more to fight Piracy, then gaugeing those who choose to stay legit...

I got Gears of War and the game is absolutely incredible. Easily worth 60$ US, and I got it for 40$ used. I've been playing for hours and it doesnt feel old, and with surround sound, you just get sucked in and anxious. Its absolutely incredible. I said that already.
Way to go Epic. It makes me happy that great game designers can come together and still make a phenomenal game at low cost and make tons of money off of it.

You find that cheap? Keep in mind Lost PLanet's 20 million is on the high end of the curve. Games are indeed increasing in cost. Does this number also take into account the $$ spent in the 3d graphics technology? Probably not.

Technically the money put into the engine will be null by the amount of other companies licensing it. If it was an engine made specifically for that one game, and only used internally, then I'd say it should be counted in. But since the engine was created to be sold and will make more money back then was spent on it, it really doesn't make sense to add the price of it into every game that uses it.
