I went to radioshack the other day, asked for a gamebit, and they had no idea what it was! Are there any other stores that carry it? And its the 4.5mm diameter that I want, right?

If u dont find Gamebit, then buy 4mm screwdriver-type box wrench, it works very good too. and besides that u can find easily.

If you have a bic pen, melt the skinny end and push it on to the screw wait for it to cool, it works perfectly and beats spendin money.

Stores do not carry the 4.5mm security bit, commonly refered to as the 'gamebit' because , if they did it really wouldn't be a security bit :)

Sears wells a 4mm hex screwdriver for like $4 and it does the job, but sometimes the screws are too hard to get out.

Good luck!

I've tried that with multiple BIC pens, and the little knobs end up stripping

I never found the BIC pen method a viable solution, as it doesn't seem strong enough after the melt to loosen those tight screws, but he is right, it is a cheap solution... but $4 is worth it to get the cube open and start coding/playing backups/etc.

if the cubes screws are loose the pen method works great,
but ive found with some gamecubes they are very tightly screwed in and the pen method does not work as well (end up using lots of pens)

well this is great..I tried the pen method once more and got the pen stuck in there (end broke off), and I got the 4mm hex screwdriver, unfortunately it doesn't work either..

I also can't stand the bic pen method, i even bashed it during my review of the qoob pro. If you can find a 5/32 nut driver it will work, but I went to 3 hardware stores and cound not find it. I have seen the gamebit on ebay a few times and i know several places online (which I know you wanted it locally) I went ahead and bit the bullet and bought one from foundmy.com.

It sounds to me like your are melting the pen to much.. as did I my first time. If your geting it hot enough that it breaks off inside the hole that is to much! What i do is light a candle and hold the pen over the flame (Do not touch the flame) if the pen burns you messed up throw it away. Holding it over the candle for about 5 seconds untill the tip looks like it has a drop of water on it about to drip. Then quick press the tip of it into the screw hole. Have a glass of water with ice cubes ready to cool it off. While it is cooling off just keep making more pens... after like the 5th one you will have found the best way to do it. When you go to unscrew the gamecube put a wad of paper towel at the other end of the pen so you can really press it hard without the back of the pen stabing your palm. Here is what it should look like.
