Wiinja Mod Knocked for Six by Wii Hardware Design 'D2B'

There are reports circulating via the official Wiinja forums that there PIC based mod is not working on all Wii consoles. Wii units will either have a GC2-DMS chip or GC2-D2B chip, the latter hardware chip renders the Wiinja useless. Currently there is no external way of checking whether or not a Wii has which of the mentioned chipsets.

Upgradeability has nothing to do with this, if the chip doesn't work, but is upgradeable with a disc, the disc will not run cause the chip will not work. And if this true, I see absolutely no reason why it wouldn't be the same with Cycloshit and Wiikey, as they use all the same methods. So it's unfair to just tell this only about Wiinja, as this is the only one tested yet.

And now for the validity of this story, how many people exactly have this problem up till now? Just one or is it confirmed by others already?

Seems like this is where the "news" came from. I do not mind MC making money off of selling a chip (you know they are OVER promoting the cyclo). What I do not appreciate is trying to crap on every other chip and then report it as news.

The picture may be accurate. It only shows three wires, but those three wires are the ones that count.

The other two wires are for VCC and GND. The modchip installer could have used two points closer to where he installed the chip. Thus, they wouldn't be seen in the picture.

He could have also taken that picture mid-install.

But this, like the initial reaction to the picture, is conjecture.

The picture is too ambiguous to tell if it was an install screw-up.

We need actual stories from people in the field complaining that their chips don't work.

If you guys think any of the 3 current chips are anything but a few lines of code to bypass a simple DVD check, you're sorely mistaken. All these 'features' that are listed are just a by-product. The "built in audio fix" is built into the Wii, not the drive mod. The "stealth mode" is because it's a drive mod, therefore not detectable by the Wii.

It's all the same schitt programmed into different chips. The only difference is that 2 of them are upgradeable by using GC homebrew, 1 has a LED (wowz!@), and 2 of them can be quicksoldered. If one of them doesn't work because of a certain chip in certain revisions of the Wii, none of them will.

The fact is, this is a very isolated incident, and at this point, nothing is confirmed. It could be due to a bad install job, a bad chip, different firmware on the Wii drive that's causing problems, bad media, who knows. If it is an actual problem, we'll be hearing about it in mass as more people get their chips installed. It's a little too early to cry wolf.

I think I read about that guy posted the pic with the three wires in a spanish forum. As far as I understood, he tried several times to resolder the wires, so it might be, he just gave up, and made a photo when he was either half away from completly removing the Wiinja, or half away from re-soldering it.

@hitman43: Just for my understanding...what do you expect to get updated on the CycloWiz ??? It´s still a simple drivehack like the Wiinja. It´s not better or worse. To be honest, I personally prefer the good old PICs since they are simple and easy to install/remove. The only valid point is the price. All chips do the same so the only the street price counts. And that may be an advantage for the Wiinja. The PBC for the CycloWiz costs more than a simple PIC which can be produced in masses for like nothing. So if the Wiinja drops in price - it´ll make the race for sure. When everyone understood that the CycloWiz is nothing more than just a simple Wiinja on a PBC, and the Wiinja is like $25 - they will buy the Wiinja.
And please, don´t count on the update feature of the CycloWiz too much, since there is not so much to update - that´s just marketing.

I had full intention of buying a CycloWiz, as it is the cheaper upgradeable chip. But I cannot condone MaxConsole using these underhanded methods to promote this chip without any reguard for the truth.

Zeus's reporting of this story was irresponsible. there are 2 coming from the left but it doesnt mater because the thing is you need 5 cables going from the chip to be soldered, in this picture it may not be complited, but you can see the 5 points where the cables are suposed to be soldered. in the picture that the moron who says its incompatible, he shows only 3 cables soldered, so we know that person its just a moron, and because hes the only person to claim it isnt working, we can say its just bullshit, and the wiinja does work(we havnt heard of anyother person having trouble) on all wiis.:) :)
