Well then... after many, many fun gaming hours my GameCube decided to die on me.
As in: The drive motor refuses to spin my discs (the rest seems ok).
Since this is a JAP cube modded with a US switch + a ViperGC modchip... I really, really liked to keep this system working (better yet: spinning).
My question is:
If I go out and buy a PAL GameCube, can I switch the DVD-drives??
:(
I do wonder... was it "age" that killed the drive or did the modchip somehow help this about??
Oh well...

hmm well since the modchip works by keeping the laser actice it prolly didnt help. If you left it on all night that might have added a lot of extra wear and tear.
as for a pal drive in the jap system, from the research i have done it looks like it would work. the drives them selves seem to be pretty indepandant of the actual version/region of the system
and since the region is controlled by the motherboard, and all the power is regulated fron the exturnal inverter i would say it should work fine.

Well... the cube died during a gaming session which only lasted... 30min?
True though, I have gamed perhaps 5 hours in a row, from time to time. Nothing to special.
No all-nighter for the DVD-drive though...
I very much doubt the ViperGC/BIOS'es have anything to do with it's "death".
It was simply an old DVD-drive.
Seeing how easy it would be to simply swap the drives...
...I find it to be good news that someone agrees :)
Would save me the hassle of re-installing the modchip and retaining a US/JAP Cube.
Thnx for the info!
