just installed the chip and was able to flash it. i boot up the GC and the drive doesn't spin up nor does the bios show. i get a screen flicker when i power on but that's the only sign of life video-wise. thinking i must've screwed up the install on that 5v wire but wanted to see if anyone else had something similar happen. thanks!

Does the light come up on the Qoob Modchip? If not, then yes it's either 5v or ground. If 5v is stuffed up, try this:
Have it plugged into USB (to power the modchip) then start up the cube, if you get pictures then it's 5v. However make sure there's no power going to the modchip before you plug the USB otherwise things can get ugly.

Yeah, the chip lights up and I can flash it...I was thinking that I might have fried the board doing the 5v solder but it just seems strange that drive isn't spinning up.
thanks for the reply!

Does your gamecube led on the front light up when you turn the power on?
If not then you may have messed up the resistor right above the 5v point...
That region is crucial for supplying power to the disc drive and the led on the front of the gamecube but not the bios.
That's not to say all is lost however, I've broken my resistor twice now by stripping the solder off the left side, but have repaired it successfully both times by carefully adding some solder back. My Qoob is unreliable though and only boots 1 in 5 times...pushing the power switch half in before going all the way seems to help.

Hey, thanks for your reply.
I took the system apart yet again yesterday and removed the chip, shut the system up and it worked perfectly. I put the chip back in, shut it up, and it worked perfectly. I'm thinking that the drive might not have been seated properly.
I do have the issue about drive not reading media and need to figure out how to read my multimeter so that I can adjust the pot. :)

I know this post was made a while ago, but I'm having a similar problem to you, regarding media not working..
I just got a Qoob Pro, and everything boots up fine.... up the bios I mean...
When I run original games, they boot in just fine... they stop spinning for a sec, then spin like hell, as they load up..
When I run a backup-ed game burned in the following programs: Nero, CloneCD, AShampoo, IMGBurn, Alcohol 120%... and no matter whether they are full sized ISOs, Wiped version that are FastFixed in all ways.... I just doesn't boot up whatsoever...
I even burned on a normal size DVD and tried it with the lid open, and it still didn't boot..
I've adjusted the POT on my machine, and instead of taking 10-13 seconds to jump from the notice "LOADING" to the notice "...", which freezes there, it now only takes 5-7 seconds... but still doesn't load...
I'm thinking of getting a bunch of Ritek G04 Mini's... Since I know, pretty much for certain, that the blanks I'm using are of a pretty low quality..
I just wanted to know - is the problem blanks, or something else????
If someone has had this problem, please let me know, thank you!
