Use SMS. You can find it in a number of places, but it's home is here (http://sms.ps2-scene.org/eng/index.htm). It's the best general media player for the PS2 out, and getting improved all the time. It's also open source - the code can be found in the PS2Dev.org repository. So if you have any coding skill, or if you just want to see what makes a PS2 media player tick, there you go.

werd, SMS works the best for me, if you have a thumbdrive you can put your movies on, even better!

Depends... how is your PS2 set for running homebrew? I've run SMS a number of ways:

First way: put the SMS elf file and an appropriate system.cnf file on a CD via cdgenps2 and boot (requires mod-chip or swap discs).

Second way: use ID exploit and put on memory card. PS2 Exploit Made Easy helps with that... http://ps2dev.org/ps2/Loaders/PS2_eXploit_Made_Easy.download

By the way, the ps2eme arc also has a version of cdgenps2 in it.

Third way: put it on the hard drive and run via something like uLaunchELF. uLaunchELF is VERY handy. You'll find it at ps2scene as well. It's what I use for running SMS and copying my media files to/from my hard drive in the PS2. In fact, I made uLaunchELF the app that the ID Exploit runs, so all I do is boot that stupid PS1 football CD and POOF! I'm in uLaunchELF and ready to run stuff off the harddrive (not commercial games... uLaunchELF is NOT HDAdvance or something similar, it's for running homebrew and moving files around).

Fourth way: use ps2client to run SMS via ethernet connected to PC (requires PS2 connected to PC via ethernet along with proper software on both sides - go to ps2dev to get more info on this method).

i got mine running off the memory card, put it the DVD swapmagic loader, after it loads, put in the DVD-R full of AVIs, boot up the SMS elf and enjoy!

tnx guys,

i dont have a harddrive,
and i dont have the thing to put files on my memory card,
so i think ill have to use this way:
First way: put the SMS elf file and an appropriate system.cnf file on a CD via cdgenps2 and boot (requires mod-chip or swap discs).

so i must download cdgenps2,
then put the SMS ELF File and system.cnf on a cd and put that cd in my ps2 right ??

yeah i just downloaded the SMS thing,
but i dont have system.cnf ?????

any solutions ???

You can get SMS cd images here (http://sms.ps2-scene.org/eng/cdimage.htm). That page has standalone NTSC and PAL images, as well as instructions on making your own images. You probably want the standalone NTSC or PAL image.

If you have a mod-chip, or swap magic, you can run SMS and then have it play files from the USB.

The slim ps2 can't use the MC exploit.

Is there a mirror for these images? bandwidth exceeded. Thank you

I don't think there are any mirrors. Just try again in a little bit.

Is the SMS player capable of reading from an external HD formatted in NTFS, or does it have to be FAT32?

An internal hdd formatted in playstation format, or an external USB pen in FAT format.

An internal hdd formatted in playstation format, or an external USB pen in FAT format.

So... there's no possibility of connecting an external harddrive for viewing movies in SMS? :( (Since you just mentioned a pen)

... I just bought myself a case to slip one of my SATA discs into you see. Thought about connecting it to the PS2 (slim) through the USB port.

I don't have one to try... it may work... as long as it was accessed the same way as pendrives are.

Seems like an external FAT-formatted harddrive will do nicely with the player, thank you very much for helping out! :)

The following is an extract from the user guide. It does not answer the question but a good starting point. My matrix equipped ps2 should be here tomorrow so will test it out.

If you have a USB external drive I would suggest you create a partition on it and format it in FAT16 or FAT32 and test it.

Partition magic will do the trick, HD Loader supports USB Drives so its worth checking what format it uses.

3.5. Playing video files from a PS2 Internal Hard Drive
Note
This section of the documentation is not yet completed in full.
<Section to be completed> for now, here's the basics in short:

Copy files to hdd via ftp or other means.

Select hdd from device menu icon on SMS screen.

Browse to file and press X.

3.6. Playing video files from a USB mass storage drive connected to the PS2
You can play audio and video files from a USB stick connected to the front of your PS2.

SMS is capable of reading files from a USB drive, but due to liscencing issues, the USB driver USBD.IRX is not included with the SMS distribution. SMS looks for it in the following folders:

host:USBD.IRX

mc0:/BOOT/USBD.IRX

mc0:/PS2OSCFG/USBD.IRX

mc0:/SYS-CONF/USBD.IRX

mc0:/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX

mc0:/BOOT/PS2MP3/USBD.IRX

mc0:/SMS/USBD.IRX

A suitable version of USBD.IRX can be found within the distribution of naplink: naplink-ps2-v1.0.1a. This can be found at http://naplink.napalm-x.com/.

Download the above zip file, and open it up – inside you will find a file called npm-usbd.irx. Copy this file to a local folder on your computer, then rename it to USBD.IRX (must be in capitals). Then use an FTP program or other method to copy the file to one of the above locations. Next time SMS starts up, it will have USB support enabled. You won't see any difference until you plug in a compatible USB drive. Then you will see a new icon as shown below. Press RIGHT to select this icon and browse the USB drive.

Use Ps2reality, burn it from this link

http://www.geocities.com/x7r3m3_b0mb3r/ps2reality.html.

So everytime i want to play another film i have to burn every all over again on to a CD with my divx file then play via the ps2?

and also what if the divx is to big for the cd and needs to go on a DVD?

The latest version support usb memory sticks, I just used that rather than burn disks all the time.
