View Full Version : Psx Disc swapping idea

Ok ive been thinking of it since a while now, and ive come across to the disc swapping problem in metal gear solid.
This is the fact: the game doesnt let u save at the end of disc one, and unlike parasite eve, saving before the disc change would not help at all (the game will ask for disc 1)
So guys, im wondering if someone can test this (i dont have a save for mgs yet, so i cant try it)
- Play until the game asks for disc changing
- Supposedly, the emulator will stop streaming data from the eboot (like the real discs, it stop spinnings and it keeps all the data into psx volatile ram)
- Pull out the memorystick, change the eboot in the folder, pop it in back
- Hit a button to start the check of disc 2
Theorically it should load the second disc, like it has been swapped for real.
Maybe the original idea of sony was this at all.
Anyway, if someone can test this, post results (it should work with other games too, since the method is the same)
Cheers

I don't think that will work because the PSX emu is not actually looking to run the eboot but just recieve the signals that the lid has opened and the new disc has been inserted.
Something along the lines of a mount/unmount option using a PRX would do the job fine though.

thats true, but usually u can force the game to read the disc, even if u didnt changed it, pressing a button. i jus thought that this could be an idea, now lets wait for someone to test it.

all multidisk games have an option to save before the disk change to start on the next disk when that save is loaded.
when the time comes, just save and load up the image for disk 2. Its not rocket science.... :p

The point is that MSG doesn't ask you to save before swapping. I read somewhere that if you save after you defeat Sniper Wolf and start the 2nd CD and load up that save, it would work. Can someone confirm?

No.. Not all multi disc games provide that option

the FF and metal gear do (at least mine do anyway), and they are the important ones.
Any others remember we can just wait for sony to release if we cant solve ourselfs and we'll just use their solution, whatever it maybe.
Just like the PS1 EMU :p

how its supposed to do it, speaking about your metal gear solid, if alot of users confirmed that there arent any save points before the disc swap?

So, if I convert Disc 1 and 2 of MGS (US-Version) with the SAME ID, it will ask for save before disc swap?
And because i used the same id when converting, it will recognize the save of disc 1 when using disc 2?

What happens in Parasite Eve if you do the second cd and then load the save file from the first CD?
Doesn't it ask you to save right before you switch CDs?

I don't know if this can work, but maybe you can try editing the iso of disc 1 to include the content of disc 2 (would need at least a 2gb mem stick tho) and then just pressing a button when it asks for the next disc.. The game will probably check the disc to see if it is the correct one, but on the off chance that it doesn't and just tries to read the content, it just might work.

Here's a theoretical way to fix this issue:
Find some CD authoring programs for PSX and extract both game discs into a folder. Create a new PSX-compliant ISO combining the two discs into one (It will need to be a mixed mode etc - UltraISO helps). Then create a big PBP out of the two combined ISOs.
I didn't try this, I don't have any multi-disc games I desperately need to play. The only problem I can see is maybe getting the "old" tools for PSX CD creation (I remember you need to write a license and whatnot),

I read that, with Parasite Eve, if you save on the last save before it asks for disc swap, you can load up Disc 2 and load up that save.

No you would still be asked to insert disc 2. The game is just programmed that way. It's not asking for disc 2 because it ran out of content on the disc. The game is programmed so that when you reached a certain point, 2nd disc will be needed to continue.
I can only assume it was made this way to discouraged piracy.

Its a good idea imo. FF7 for example has the same data on each disc except the movies. So hypothetically it would work with FF7 because it will still ask for the disc, but the 2nd disk will also be loaded. So you should be able to continue on just by pressing X.
Once I get to disc 2 on FF7 Ill test this myself.

Regarding the Metal Gear Solid swapping the MS over for the disc change. I have already tried that....didnt work as I thought it wouldnt!
Instead of playing through the game I just inserted Disc 2 and selected start a new game. Then it asked for Disc 1, so I took out my MS with disc 2 on and inserted my MS with disc 1. The psp asks if i want to quit the game when I take out the mem stick, and when i put the other mem stick in i see it read the stick....but it just stays at the Insert Disc 1 screen.
I have read somewhere that most multi disc games actually over lap, i.e. that the end of disc 1 is also present on disc 2, therefore, for MGS anyway, we should be able to save at the end of killing Sniper Wolf and then just load up disc 2 with this gamesave and play on...it was years ago that I last played MGS1, Im playing through it now and will post what happens once I reach Sniper Wolf...if I do anyway....PsycoMantis is going to be hard to beat using Controller Port 1!!!

if there are any devvers trying to solve this they should use vib ribbon to test this, since this game asks to insert the vib ribbon disk or an audio cd from the start.
I hope someone fixes it tho :x

Now I have no idea if this could actually work on the 3.02oe-b, but here are a couple of my ideas.
1- Is there a way to hexedit a save file. Technically, there should be an area within the save file that is identical to a regular PS1 save file. So we get a PS1 save file right after the disc swap and copy all of the hex code, then switch the hex code into the PSP PS1 save file.
2- Before KXPloit we had an issue with this. The resolution was to use the % after the wording. I wonder if this can be done somehow with the iso before packing it. So maybe packing 2 isos and naming one with a %. I doubt this will work, but I was just taking a stab in the dark.
3- This one probably makes the most sense, but I wonder if there could be a CWCheat code that can be created to solve this issue.

My personal idea would be to actualy find the code that tells it to ask for the next disk in the game, then nop that part out so it never asks for it, then build a new iso containing the files from both disks (MGS for an example) now if the games main files are the same for both games its just the files are different then it will continue to run as if you had done the CD change but since its cracked no to even ask for the next disk it will just continue as if it was a single disk game.
Unfortunaly I dont know alot about hacking PSX games so if anyone has knolage of this get a two disk game make combine the files from both disks first extract the second disk then the first and overwrite any file that needs to be (thats if its seperate files) if its a combined file or some sort try combining them together but the main executalbe for the game use the first disks one.
When running it in memory try finding this function for it asking for the next disk when you find it nop it entirly then get to the change disk part again and see what happens.
This would be best done on a PC emulator or on a real Playstation PSOne..

Since when have they contained saves. Not counting Xbox version but still who cares about getting passed it with someone elses save data.
Action replay and exploder are for code menipulation in the games running code, we can already do exactly that with cwcheatspop I still think combining the disks data together and noping the disk change function will work.
If anyone has actual psx tools of some sort or know any usefull sites let me know.

well for a start you need the correct disc ids and correct names. they`re right there on the disc. the only way i can see a multi-disc workin, is if dark alex can somehow add a disc swap to the home button menu, but remember i dont think sony will ever cover those because it would probably leave an exploit in the system about loadin an eboot from an eboot.

only if the game doesnt allow you to save right before you switch disks.
iirc, the psx would reset as soon as you hit the open button. so there has to be a way to switch discs, that some people just arent doing right.
only thing is, its only been a couple days, and a lot of people havent played enough to get to the 2nd disc on some of these games.
if all else fails, someone could try combining isos, into one big image, so when it asks for cd2, its technically already inserted. *this should work for games like FF7 which have the same game data on all 3 discs, only difference is the movies.*

this does suck about the disc swap thing, but i'd at least like to play the first disc, but both rippers i tried using (Easy CD Clone 1.10 & CloneCD 5.something) didn't complete the rip. Is there a setting i need to fix, or do i need to use a different program for this game? i tried getting torrents, but i don't know how to work those ones that are split up into like 25 different files, ya know? how do i put those together and/or extracted them to make one image file? any help would be much appreciated. thanks.

well, there is this cheataplication for popstation, called cwcheat, so i was wondering, wouldn't it be able to use that to send a code/signal to the emulator so it tricks it into thinking the disk is beeing switched, so it starts reading again (this might work for MGS)

Best idea I've heard in this type of threads.

get winrar install it then you just double click on the first file of the 25 or how ever many there is and winrar will open click extract then tell it where to and thats it you have the 1 image file hope this helps

i'm not shure but u can try download cwcheat http://cwcheat.consoleworld.org/CWCHEAT_016_REVD_FOR_302OE-POPS-PSX.RAR
activate it in recovery mode
when the game wants asks to change disk press home button, emulation will stop
activate cwcheat (hold select) and enable usb, plug usb and replace EBOOT.PBP and KEYS.BIN in the game folder
exit cwcheat and pray
this is only a theory, but i sense it might work =))))
dont have games to check this

I know that can't be a serious suggestion, but if it were, it shows a severe misunderstanding of how the system works.
I believe the most effective and viable way to bypass this problem is cracking the save game encryption, and playing past the disc change on a PC emulator.
Some poeple have been talking about saving data in the snowfield in MGS, then swapping to the 2nd disc PBP. This doesn't work. :( It still asks for disc 1.

Disc swapping is already implemented in the PS emu.
There'll be an option called "Disc Switch" when you press Home key.
When you select it, it'll say,
"The current disc is Disc xxx"
"Select a disc to switch to"
Then select a disc,
"This will switch to Disc xxx"
"If there is no prompt from the game, you may not be able to continue gameplay."
"Do you want to go ahead with this operation?"
But this will only show up on official PS multidisc games. The reason why you dont see it now is probably because Hot Shots is not a multidisc game. So you're gonna have to wait for official multidisc games to come out and see how Sony does it, or somehow activate the menu yourself.

I was on another forum today and found a fix for Parasite Eve by this dude named psychospacefish. So far it works and he's currently working on MGS. Just a quick idea I can't test right now. Merge two ISOs into one. E.g. MGS or Parasite Eve:
Go to dos-prompt and merge with: copy /b cd1.iso cd2.iso merged.iso
Then let popstation use that instead. It might work, depending on how advanced the RAW image reading the code is inside the emulator..
If it doesn't work, then it's waiting for the first multi-disk-official-psxpsp game and hoping popstation security hasn't been made too tight.

there was a time when they had a Dark_Alex impostor on their forums who would release his files and speak in the forums as if he was the real one. they would also revise his readme's adding in the ps2nfo.com logo. This almost caused the real dark_alex to leave the scene along with a few other dev's.

Won't work, and many people have suggested this already.
The games programming will still ask for disc 2 regardless of wether the data is in the iso or not. Will still get stuck on a "please insert disc x" screen.
This would probably work if the game was patched to bypass the disc change though. Presumably this is what that guy on ps3news has done with Parasite Eve.

as for how I did it, well I'm sure that there's a better way then the method I used. It involved the ePsx emulator and about two save files to get it to work. I don't know if i should write a tutorial because it seemed like a little too much work maybe I can slim it down a bit.And I'm not good at tutorials either, but don't worry it wont be too long now till some mod makes good one now. I guess for now I could try to make one and have it up by tomorrow morning.

Alright I got it Here's is how I loaded up my disk 2 games using CWcheat V0.16 and the ePSXe playstation emulator for PC and my original disk2 ISO of Metal Gear Solid. And if you don't have an iso of the your disk2 game you can extract the iso from the disk2 eboot on your psp with a hex editor just search for it.
First Install Weltall's amazing cheat device CWcheat v0.16 E for the PSX emulor from Zeu's post here:
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=41661&page=2
Follow the readme's Weltall has kindly included on how to install, Once you have it installed and running loadup your psx game and load up your save file. Now if you've installed the Cwcheat correctly you should load it up by holding the select button for three seconds. and the menu should appear ( Take Note of the Games ID up at the top of the Screen should look like slus_xxxxx or something) Scroll down to where the option for "Manage memory cards" appears and press x. Now you should see 5 options:
save memory card 1 to memory stick
save memory card 2 to memory stick
load memory card 1 from memory stick
load memory card 2 from memory stick
exit
Now depending on where the save you wish to continue is saved in, either the card 1 slot or card 2 slot of the ingame memory cards, choose the "save to memory stick" option for your corresponding card. There wont be any conformation that it's been done so don't expect any. then Hit the exit option and back out from the menu.
Now quit your game and go back to the XMB of your psp and place your psp in USB mode. Hook it up to your pc.
Now I'm assuming you already have the psx emulator "epsxe" installed If not here is a link to their main website:
http://www.epsxe.com/news.php
Run epsxe and under the "Config" menue there should be a memory card option. Now load up the save file you made earlier from your psp( it should be in the X:\seplugins\cwcheat\mc\ folder "x" being the drive letter of your psp. the file should have the game id of your psx game and the extension of ".mcr" For ex. "slus_00594-0.mcr"
load this up as your memory card and then go to file and run your iso or cd if you have it of the game. load up your save and play through to the point where you have to change disks. once this happens hit the esc key on your keyboard. Go to file again and the option to change disk should show up. This is where you load up your second Disk's iso or cd.
Once your past the disk change point play up to a save point in your game, and save using your games normal save options. since your memory card was loaded from your psp these changes should be save to the psp again. Now quit epsxe and disconnect your psp
load up your disk two eboot from the game folder and once it's started load up the CWcheat device. Take note of the second disk's Game Id.
If it's the same from the first disk's id skip down to the next step.
once you know the second disks id quit everything and put your psp back in usb mode. Go to the folder X:\seplugins\cwcheat\mc\ and rename your memory card to this id ex.
memory card save file in "mc" folder is: slus_00594-0.mcr
Disk 2 Game id is: SLUS-00776
rename mcr file to: slus_00776-0.mcr
Once that's done the final step is to load up your psx game and run CwCheat go to the option "Manage memory cards" and choose from the last two options:
load memory card 1 from memory stick
load memory card 2 from memory stick
Choose according to where you selected before in the beginning from the options save to memory card. exit the cheat device
Your newly advanced save should appear in the games save functions. load up your save and save again in order to update your actual in game save to Disk 2.
An alternative is to download a psx game save from a cheat website ( http://www.gamefaqs.com/systems.html is a good place to start)
If it's already in mcr format and past the diskchange already, then re-name that save with your second disks game id like in the example below and place it in the X:seplugins\cwcheat\mc\ folder so It can be loaded by Cwcheat. If the save file you have downloaded is not in mcr format you can use this converter to make it so.
http://psxmemtool.ngemu.com/index.php
to use the converter:
Just load up your downloaded save with it and click on the save icon, then from the drop down extension menu chose "Save Type mcr"
once it's converted to .mcr re-name file like this:
If your Game's id is : SLUS-00776
then rename mcr file to : slus_00776-0.mcr
Then put that file into your psp's memory stick here:X:\seplugins\cwcheat\mc\
and load it up with Cwcheat in the manage memory card option...and don't forget to save right after once it's loaded to update the real save.
I hope this helps if and I know it sux but if someone could clean this up for me I would gladly appreciate it or even make a better one that would be great. and i take no credit in this I'm just wanting to help my fellow man as best I can. Thanks to Weltall for the cheats man I love it and to the epsxe team for such a wonderful emulator.
I've included the my Metal gear solid ePSXe save that starts right after the diskchange. If you don't want to go through the trouble at least for metal gear Just load up the epsxe save with cwcheat. Snake will have everything bandanna stealth guns everything really and max life, plus I used the offical game Id of metal gear's disk one so you just have to edit your eboot and give it this game id for the save to be recognized in disk two SLUS-00594. You can use this to change your existing psx Eboot of disk 2 to match mine which is the official game Id:
http://forums.maxconsole.net/showthread.php?t=40946
Change it to this id SLUS-00594.
You can find the Official Id's for all Ntsc psx games here:

Here I hope I'm not to late, and I know the whole mess I wrote up there in the last post seems like alot but in practice it only takes a few min. like 2 tops. Man I really wish I were better at this tutorial thing. This is the save before the diskchange the one in my tutorial is that save past the diskchange and it's made for the 1.1 US version of metal gear.
Oh yeah I read about that parasite eve fix. it really works and he's currently working on one for metal gear too.

Sorry about that I used the cheat device to get to that point faster since I didn't want to have people to wait for me. here's the cheats I used if you want to try them out now with Cwcheat, just copy this file into your memory cards X:seplugins\cwcheat\ folder once you have Cwcheat installed and load them up in game. and if you already have some cheats installed don't copy my db over since you'll just overwrite your old one. For that it is best to open up your cheatpops.db with notepad and copy the lines of text from the text file I have here to the end of your cheats.

Try loading one of the epsxe saves instead since my psp saves are for the us version, first find out the game id of the actual iso you used in the eboot by loading it up with Cwcheat, it should apear near the top. then rename the epsxe memory card I included here to the game id of the disk like i showed in the end of the tutorial. wouldn't it be possible to edit the emulator ?
at this moment when you press the home button in the emu you will get a small menu
what if we add an option ?!?!?!?

and you will be able to browse to your next .img and load it
i'm no coder and no hacker
but if it's possible that would be the best option
don't you think (just a thought)

But it's true????
Only wait a OFFICIAL Multidisc games from sony for this "option" in psx menu, or it's possible to "hack" for activate it?

It freezes whilst the credits are scroling. You need to beat the game to unlock the EX GAME, but you cannot save the 'clear data' as it freezes before you can save.
I simply used the origonal cd2 eboot to get past this.
Just a warning to use cd2 before the LONG DIFICULT battle with the ULTIMATE BEING..

WHAT IS EX GAME ?
Ex Game is similar to the main game but all the enemies and bosses are stronger and
tougher very much. Each day the game gives you some Bonus Points to
increase your stat. Try to do your best with them because the enemies in
EX Game are now very dangerous. Ex Game has a new location - Chrysler
Building which contains a lot of secret things. Here you will meet Maya
- the true Eve with invincible power and also the toughest boss of this
game, I think. Let me take you to the real world of this place.

After boozing it up on new years I'm working on it again. However what should have been a simple fix turned into something far more complex. Metal Gear Solid simply looks for SLUS_005.94 or SLUS_007.76 in the MGS folder to determine what disc it's on. However, after rebuilding the disc image with both in the MGS folder, it seems that if SLUS_007.76 is in the MGS folder it assumes that Disc 2 is inserted, and then won't even search for SLUS_005.94 at the disc swap screen. It seems that I'm going to have to disable the swap screen some other way, so I'm looking through the game in a disassembler trying to work something out.

i suppose you could just use disc1 up to the discswap, create the large combined eboot, then switch back to disc2 again? :D
Im trying to do that, but heres the thing:
I already played to the ending of disc 1 (Parasite eve), with the 2 eboot release i downloaded from that which cannot be named. the b-word XD
got the insert disc error, so, i downloaded the disc fix from the same place, i put it in, the game runs, neat, the problem is, that when i try to replace de MEMCARD1.DAT file that came with the disc fix, with the MEMCARD1.DAT file that i was saving my game with the first 2eboot release. an error appears, 8000x or something the game cannot be started, i think it is because theres something diferent with the previous file, its like it is not identifiying it at all...
the save folder i used with the first 2 eboot release, was named SCUS something, and the new folder from the disc fix is named SLUS something...
now, i dont know anything about it, but it might be posible that i have to edit this number in the MEMCARD1.DAt file? so it can be recognized. because right now if i just replace it the whole game doesnt run, if i erase it, then the game starts normal, and when i check back, the MEMCARD1.DAT file was regenerated by the eboot, but of course, its empty and doesnt have my saves...
so, any idea if i have to edit it or something? what do i have to edit...
well, im gonna download a hex editor and try it anyway...
please help!!!

Yo dude and for all the people who have trouble to kill PsycoMantis, if you die 4 times or more call Campell while you are fighting Mantis. Or, you could try this: In the upper left and right corners there are 2 statues. Shoot the statues to reveal their faces en Mantis will easy to beat :D

ok since i started this mess lol i feel that i should contribute on how i play my multi disk games.
Before i start keep in mind that the psp doesnt want to load the disc 2 saves anyway IF YOU DONT USE AN EBOOT WITH THE SAME SLUS/SLES CODE! EVEN WITH AUTOMATIC "END DISK SAVE" BECAUSE THE PSP USES A MEMORYCARD SAVE BASED ON THE SONY CODE.
OK, heres what i did : Both MGS and PE1 / 2 tested.
MGS asks to swap disc when you have beaten sniper wolf. Enter the door in the upper left corner, go past over the security cameras, and you will face a tunnel that goes down. That's the furnace entrance. If you go over, you will be prompted to insert disc 2. Now:
Extensive Guide:
FIRST: install cwcheat. Run the game, go in the menu of cwcheat, hit Save Memory Card in slot 1. This will create a save names SLUSCODE.MCR (i dont need to explain this right?) into MS0:/SEPLUGINS/CWCHEAT/MC (this can change according to weltall changes, anyway hunt down the *.MCR file). Copy your MCR file somewhere and use a PC emulator like pSX 1.10 wich doesnt need plugins and ****, or ePSXe if you like to go with plugins eh.
Now run the iso or cd, load the game using the game menu, then just go into that tunnel and you will be prompted to insert disc 2. Using pSX, just hit FILE->INSERT CD IMAGE or INSERT CD DISC. Hit this once you swapped discs - after that the game will resume. Save again. If youre using ePSXe the things is more easy. Pop in disc one, set the emulator to load the MCR from the psp. Load last save, go into the tunnel to furnace. Hit ESC. Hit FILE-> CHANGE DISCS-> either CD IMAGE or CD ROM. Put in second disc and after the game resumes, save again. Now convert the second disc iso into an EBOOT using THE SAME ID CODE OF DISC ONE. Put it in your PSP. Now load your eboot. Press select to bring up CWCHEAT. Use the function "load memory card from slot 1". Done! Now you can resume your game. :)
Short Guide:
- If you plan to play a game on multi disc, i suggest to convert them all @ once using the first game SLUS/SLES id-code. This will save alot of time.
- Save often, and try to save the more near possible to end of the disc. MGS was easy because after sniperwolf killing, you need to walk for 30 seconds.
- Use CWCHEAT to save the memorycard slot 1 into MCR emulator format. Load the same memorycard located into SEPLUGINS/CWCHEAT/MC with an emulator like ePSXe or pSX 1.10
- Play the game until it asks for disc 2. If you use ePSXe, hit ESC and use the FILE menu to swap discs or cd images. Same story for pSX.
- After the game resume, save again using the game.
- Put the DISC2 eboot (3,4 whatever) into the psp, be sure to have converted it using the same sony code of DISC1.
- Put back the MCR you used for this into PSP, into SEPLUGINS/CWCHEAT/MC and start your game. After the sony psone boot logo, wait for the game to give an input (like an intro or whatever) and using CWCHEAT, load back the memorycard from slot 1.
- Load your save game. Done! You will play straight from the point you saved.
This can sound like a pain in the ass but its easy and speedy, it avoids headeaches as well lol. For a more easy way, just be sure to have the original images not coverted and they very same already converted with DISC1 sony code, so you can do both Emulator and PSP swap in no time.
Hope it helps, maybe it will not, but its the fast and working way to do this, and it works with everygame.

ok since i started this mess lol i feel that i should contribute on how i play my multi disk games.

This is the problem. We all don't want to go through this.

there is a cheat code for Cwcheat now that manages load your disk1 save on disk2 just by activating it in Cwcheat. It's the simplest way with MGS at the moment. This is by he same guy who made the patch to join disk1 and 2 of parasite eve.

Would it be possible to compile a eboot with all 3 of the disks combined using CDGENPS2 and just use a single eboot for the whole game?

First of all: you have to install Cwcheat in your psp
you have to put the FIle(SLUS_00668-0.mrc) in
ms0/seplugins/cwcheat/mc
My Parasite eve NTSC disc 2 id is SLUS_00668,(you can see the id opening cwcheat while playing the game)so if you have a different ID, change it ( SLUS_XXXXX-0 )
Turn on your psp and load Parasite eve cd2 eboot. Hold on select until appear the Cwcheat menu, go to MANAGE MEMORY CARDS, hit X, then X su LOAD FROM MEMORY STICK.

This is one heck of an idea, might be a little tedious but nevertheless it should work..
Ok, just tried it, used the CWCHEAT to save the memcard, and generated the file. Now my issues is that when I attempt to load it on one of the emulators, (tried both you suggested), I keep getting an error that says that the memcard is not formatted. Can't get beyond this.. How did you do it to where you didn't get this error?? or is there another step that makes this file that you take from the cwcheat readable.????

Here's a solution for you my good people :)
That one was tested on P.E.Op.S. CDR Driver 1.4 on ePSXe version 1.60 emulator, game - Parasite Eve. This doesn't work on epsxe 1.7 (checked), ALTHOUGH you can just copy the later save state into 1.7 version "sstate" and load it without problem :).
You will need:
- ePSXe v1.6
- the game
- basic skills in copying and renaming files
- possibly ePSXeCutor, newest version (recommended)
Here it goes:
Step 1
- save your state of the "Change to Disk 2" screen
- hit ESC to close the game
* [OPTIONAL] if you are using ePSXeCutor, go to menu and Tools->Save State menagement... here find the save state with "Change to Disc 2" pic and remember its name (should be SLUS_06.62.00X, where X stands for the number of save between 0 and 5)
- locate "sstate" folder in your ePSXe folder, and rename the save state file inside file with the "Change to Disc 2" . It should be the newest file in the folder, so just sorrt the files via date. For me, it was SLUS_06.62.00X (X is the number of savegame) and I just changed to SLUS_06.68.00X
Now if you're already running game on epsxe v1.7:
->> download ePSXe v1.6
->> copy the save state into ePSXe v1.6 "sstate" folder
Step 2:
- run ePSXe, then File->Run ISO and choose your disc two
- now load the save state. The disc STILL isn't recognised by the game, but don't be alarmed.
- hit ESC to exit the game
- now choose Change Disc-> ISO and choose the same file
- the game game will start from the last scene and after a moment...
Will accept Disc 2!
Step 3:
- save your new happy state
- if you want to play it on ePSXe v1.7, just copy the NEW save state back into the ePSXe v1.7 "sstate" folder and run it ^^
Trouble shooting:
Q: What is a save state?
A: Save state is like quick save on most games run on PC, although while its impossible on console games from PSX, ePSXe allows you to do so with its nifty implemented function. Know it, use it, love it :o
The controls are: F1 - Save state, F3 - Load state and F2 - Change state
Q: I don't know how whould I rename the file, your SLUS_06.68.00X (where X is a number between 0 and 5) is not working for me (or simply I'm using another Change Disc game)! What should I do now?
A: Mount the ISO or insert the CD of Disc 2 and check the main folder (like, f:\). There should be a file with a four letter beginning (like SLUS, SCES, or something), a flat line _, and a number with one period. This is the file save states take their names from (they just add the 00X thingy to mark the number of save state) OR
[OPTIONALY] make a state of Disc 2 game and check for its name in "sstate" folder.
Q: Why does it work on PSX 1.6 and not 1.7?
A: Dunno. I've got it by accident, cause I were still using the old EPSXe :P. The new thing about ePSXe is ISO file handling. Maybe that's why it's so buggy :)
Q: Can it be used for all the "Disc Change" problem games like Metal Gear Solid?
A: I've never tried it, but I suppose the case is the same. Just remember the hints on finding out the save state file names, those you need to find to rename and the new names for the files.
Cheers!

I played through Parasite Eve on disk one, and then merged the two game files together when I discovered that I couldn't just swap and then played most of the rest of the way through o the merged file, before having to go the second disk... my question: I've tried both runing straight from disk 2 and from the merged file, but I still get stuck at the end of the game. Merged file at the start of the final battle; and, with the second disk , near the end of the credits. I've tried reconverting without the compression and running the game both with and without fast disk loading... am I doing something wrong, overlooking something, or...?

I found that it won't save at the end of Parasite Eve with CFW 3.90m33 :( ... but, it does work with CFW 3.52m33-4! :D
