okay i see a lot of people modding their old case to fit DVD-r's... well why not just rebuild the whole outer shell of ur gamecube. i mean you could use some sort of sheet metal and build a case to put around it. a lid isnt very necessary, maybe a type of slip open lid that has a handel on the top. ive been thinkin about this for a while and i think im gonna make my own shell for the cube, no more modding the old one!!! anyone do this yet or think of something of the sort?

what do you mean by switch for spindel and laser? if you have a viper gc doesnt that bypass the lid switch, so you dont even have to have one? or am i totally confused on that :-D. say i were to take my old case and get rid of it, what would i have to put on the new one to make it COMPATIBLE...like do i need the lid sensor still? and is there any other sensor. how are people playing with their lids off if you might need these switches still. someone explain please.
Don't make a case out of metal... For obvious reasons. Why not just use mini discs? Afterall I'm not sure that motor was even meant to spin full size discs. I understand full size media is a hell of alot cheaper and easy to get but still. How many games do you really have to burn?
I used full size discs initially till I could buy some minis. Making a top piece for the case is a big job but I'm sure if you really want to you can do it. Just sort of figure out how to clone the original top piece and then remove/move obstructions to the disc.

I tried to use mini dvd-r's but got discouraged when I spent $40 on dvd's that didn't work and the full sized memorex dvd+r discs I bought in a 50 pack at best buy worked flawlessly. The case mod works really well for me, my gamecube barely looks different and it fits full sized discs easily. Anyway about the full size discs and the gamecube motor, I used to be concerned about the use of full size media hurting the gamecube, mainly because of how much longer the disc takes to stop after shutting it off, but I'm starting to think the full size discs might actually be better for the motor, I noticed the motor makes much less noise when I have a full size DVD in the gamecube, at first I thought I just couldn't hear as well because the disc was in the way but I don't think so, It would make sense that the smaller rotation of the mini dvd's creates less momentum and causes the motor to work more than when a full size DVD is in the drive, so I think full size dvd's might be better for the drive if anything.

Not much into case modding myself. But I did have this one idea.
Make an extension cable for the dvd drive connection so it can be placed off to the side, and mount everything into a 1st generation PS2 Fliptop case. Wouldn't take that much fab work. Plus it would confuse the hell out of people.

hahaha u just confused the hell out of me with this post :-D, just kidding. might be a good idea, but i like to keep some originality in my work, and puttin in a ps2 case just doesnt do it for a COOL look, already got a ps2. come on peeps get some ideas flowing and some pictures flying.
