I manage a small computer store in West Michigan, and we just had a PSP dropped off for service. This is the first one of these I've worked on, and I'm slightly confused about what to look for.

The PSP gets the Green power LED, and the Orange led flashes when the battery is inserted, but the unit doesn't seem to power on beyond that. I've seen a couple different answers to this floating around, so I'm wondering how to test it out.

My initial gut reaction is the controller board with the power switch on it. I decided to take my multimeter to it to measure the ohms on the switch, but I don't know what points to hit ... no matter what combination I seem to put the points on, I always get a closed circuit, even with the button being pushed up as to turn the device on. So, to me that says the power switch is dead.

What contacts should I put the multimeter to test the power switch?

Anyone save the JPG that shows where the fuses are located? The link I found to NewAgePSX.com seems to be dead. I'd love to check the fuses as well, as that is my second most-likely candidate.

Anyone??

that PSP unit is BRICKED!!

the only solutions are:

Send it back to Sony, and get it back with the latest firmware flashed into it. (Latest FW = v3.03)
Get the UP mod chip.
Replace the entire mobo.

it has got nothing to do with the power switch.

did the owner tell what actually happened to his PSP?? i'm sure he tried to mess with his PSP's Flash memory and failed miserably.

good luck.

That sucks.

Well, can't blame me for trying. Does Sony offer that service out of warranty (or does anyone?)??

The UP mod chip looks hella expensive for a mod chip ... $99.99 was the average price I found, and it doesn't seem quite worth that ... and $70 was the average price for a new mainboard for the PSP. Anything around that's cheaper?

OK, so here's an edit. I was slightly wrong in my description of the problem -- the power LED is ALWAYS on ... no matter how long you hold the power switch. So, controller board possibly bad, or still a bricked PSP with no choice but the UP chip or a new mobo?

i got a replacement today, and it has 2.60 on it (non TA-082), so you mite be as lucky as me and not get an up to date firmware/TA-082 board.

sounds like theres no output to the screen to me, you could try replacing the screen (really easy to do, and new screens are ~£18 from ebay) or just pay sony £35 to get a refurbished machine (with a chance of getting a TA-082 or 2.80+)

and yes, if its out of warrenty they will still replace it for £35

If it was just the screen, wouldn't holding the power button in the up position power the system off? Meaning the green LED would go out? To me it sounds like the power switch is dead?

How do I test the ohms on it?

Well, I don't think it's "on", per se; the green LED/orange charging LED are always on ... they are never off, until you disconnect AC power and the battery dies. Hook AC power back up, and the orange charging light glows, nothing else. Unhook AC power, the light is green, and never goes out, no matter what you do with the power switch.

To me that says the switch or controller board is faulty.

An update:

I took the entire unit apart, and pieced it together one piece at a time, ensuring each connection was secure. Now that it's all back together, the power LED acts normally -- you push the button up, it comes on. You push and hold, and it goes off ... etc.

However, there's no sound, no video, nada.

Now it sounds like a dead mobo/brick. Repairable? Thoughts?

maybe you got a BRICKED PSP, try to look or make a PANDORA on other PSP. Then repair your psp.

At the thread starter, do you have a pic on your PSP? It might have a problem on your DISPLAY FILTER. Try to look on it. Might your led fuse was busted.
