I was given a PSP today to try to fix it.
She said that it was dropped, now when i press the power switch the green light comes on for about 10-15 seconds and goes off, no screen activity or sound/noises.
I have taken the PSP apart and i can't see any problems, even put it back together to try out, still the same.
I get the same results from battery and power adaptor.
I am getting just over 5volts from parts including a green fuse (?).
Any help much appreciated, Thanks.
P.S. i have never used a PSP until today.

Hmm strange it broke from a drop I have dropped my PSP a few times even have a small crack on it but the psp operates fine. It seems more like its a dead PSP or known in the scene as a bricked PSP.
Likely causes; failed firmware update, failed downgrade or something of that nature.
Likely fixes; Get a Undiluted Platinum Modchip installed it has the ability to give life to dead PSPs.
Another, but unlikely fix; This one is a long shot, if it had any custom firmware on it you can access the recovery mode by holding the R button and then switching on the PSP. If that works look on guides on this forum on how to recover the PSP.
Hope this somewhat helps. Happy xmas :D

Thanks for the reply,
I thought that about dropping it as the PSP feels solid but she said she saw him do it. I'm gonna take it apart again later today, see if i can find any thing else out.
The only the green power light comes on for 20 seconds with no other activity.
One thing i noticed is that with it power by the PSU, you can hear the chips making a very faint, high pitch noise ( i'm not going mad, i've heard this noise on working PC graphic cards aswell ) when the power light is on.
It's like a main chip has come loose and as the board won't boot it shuts its self off again, for safety ( i'm most likely way off ).
Just to add..
Should any more light come on ??
Also i noticed a scratch right by the left hand switch (memory ?), so i'm gonna look at the switches when i get home tonight to see if there is any damage there.
Many thanks..

Right, i have done a few more tests and i'm not getting voltage to most parts of the board including the fuses exept the one just above the small connector for the screen.
This is with just the battery or PSU and with the power light on:confused:
Does anyone know what would cause this ?
Will be running more tests tonight.

The mainboard on the PSP might of died for some odd reason from the drop. You can buy replacement mainboards on the web. They are not that expensive.
But make sure it is the mainboard cos im just concluding from what you described to be defective.

sounds like a fried MoBo, if it is, theres no way to fix it, you could try a new MoBo (last time i checked, they were ~£70) or just buy a second hand psp for ~£100
but i dont see how dropping the psp could have fried the MoBo... maby they dropped it in a liquid?

Thanks for all the replies and help..
I'm going to give it back tomorrow and give them the bad news.
Still no change.
I did speek to the chap who dropped it and he said it smacked the edge of the table. He hasn't modified the PSP in any way ( apart from the drop ).
I feel sad i couldn't help him out as he has 5 new games for it as Xmas pressies..
Thanks again..

I got tangled up in my seat belt trying to get my wife into the ER and my psp dropped on the ground. I had dropped it before , nothing happened so I wasnt that concerned. But when I tried to play it , I got nothing. no power not anything. I got really worried. so I went back out to the truck and plugged up the car adapter to it and , it would only come on for about 20 sec. and that was it, gone no power. I can turn it right back on afterwards but 20sec. and blackness. I tried taking out battery , ms etc nothing worked. Finally I tried turning it on without the battery plugged into a wall socket. Bingo I can play for hrs. no problems. but battery in gone in 20sec.
Any suggestions?
Also I went back to the manual to see if it was in troubleshooting and it did say that with wifi turned on the battery cant charge. I made sure tha wifi is turned off. still no luck.
and incase your wondering 6 1/2 hrs in an ER with a sick wife and a broken PSP really sucked! ;)
Thanks in advance

I've seen this behavior in PCs..
I was working on a clients computer once and it would display similar problems as your PSPs are showing. Problem was that the motherboard in the PC had a hairline fracture, nearly invisable to the naked eye. But as the PC powered up and got hot, the motherboard expanded and seperated causing it to shut off
your PSP may have something similar, and that could explain why there's no power to some of the board. So while the PSP sometimes may power on and work.. it soon dies
this could be possible too =)
PS: Congrats in order nufather? =) hope everything was alright with your wife

i am new to all this so bear with me. i had a similar problem in that we think my psp was dropped and the geen light would flicker for a split second but the psp would not turn on. i thought it was a power problem so i replaced the power board but it was no go so before i threw the thing away i pulled it it apart and found that if everything except the lcd screen was plugged in the green light would come on. i also plugged in the small connection on the lcd screen but not the larger one and the lcd lit up with three big cracks through the whole screen. so now i have ordered a new lcd from ebay and am keeping my fingers crossed. I hope this helps anyone else out there who thinks their psp is bricked from dropping it. sony were no help whatsoever because i had bought it overseas but would repair it for the price of a new one (like i was gonna do that!!!)

powering off after around 15-21 seconds with no backlight or sound etc, usually means without a shadow if a doubt, it's bricked!!
