On Apple's online music store, the song Mad World has raced to number 12 on iTune's top 100 songs. The rise in popularity is due to MS's Gears of War ad which features the rather sad tune.

It’s a very very mad world on Apple’s online music store, as the Gary Jules and Michael Andrews cover of the 1982 Tears for Fears song Mad World currently stands at number 12 on iTunes' top 100 songs.

The simple song, featuring only vocals, a piano and a cello, reportedly hit the number one iTunes spot over the weekend. It also appeared in the cult classic film Donnie Darko in 2001 and became the UK's top single in 2003. The widely played Gears of War commercial seems to be the only explanation how such a low profile song in the US climbed to the top after being around for five years.

yeah it's a very sad tune. No sooner had I seen the 360 commercial I happened to catch Donnie Darko on Starz and there it was again, at the end of the movie. I like more upbeat songs, but it's not that bad. It's a weird choice for Gears though, in my opinion.

First heard it in Donnie Darko a while ago and thought it was a great song. Now a lot more people have been exposed to it, so I'd assume it would help them sell it.

the gary jules version is just a cover, it was originally done by tears for fears.

If you like more upbeat songs, "get" the song by Tears For Fears, it's a lot faster paced, like dance music almost.

As for the Gary Jules cover, it fit more in Donnie Darko, at least that was a depressing movie. Gears is a lot more like Megadeth...hence them making a song for the game.
