View Full Version : GCN Jewel Mod

I noticed no where really had a tutorial to put a picture in the jewel on the gcn, so I thought I'd make one. So here you go.
1. To remove the jewel, it is very simple. Open the tray and look at the bottom of the lid. You'll see 2 tabs on the right hand side. Squeeze them together and push up. That side should come up and then slide out the left hand tab.
2. Not what you need to do is take the 2 pieces apart. To do this, look at the jewel from the side. It looks like there are 2 layers of plexi and 1 of black plastic. **NOTE-This might vary depending on your console's color. Take a very small screw driver and slowly eaze it into the gap between the plexi and black (or whatever color it is) plastic. Pour ample goo gone in the gap and let it sit for a while. Repeat this until you have the two pieces.
3. Now what you need to do is make sure you've removed all of the adhesive. Then clean that all off so it's a nice clean surface on each side.
4. Now, you will be removing the Nintendo logo off of the jewel. I used scotch brite, but I DO NOT recommend it. It leaves the surface a little scratched. I hear you can use oven cleaner. Spray it on the backside and let sit for about 30 min. Then scrape off with a paper towel. Then clean it off again.
5. Now for the last step. Choosing your picture. Make sure its a 8 x 8 cm circle. Once it's cut out, slide it in between the two halfs. I recommend if you're a perfectionist, make a little pixel of different color on the left side to align with the tab. Sandwitch it between the two pieces ( You're able to tell which side is up by the tab. The two tabs should stay together, with no gap between them).
6. Now to put it back in. Snap it in place and enjoy!
I thought people might want a tutorial like this for their gamecube to snaz it up. If you ruin your jewel, don't blame me. This mod is full proof. Even if you do, you can buy another one at the online nintendo store for 2 bucks. If you want, you can use my picture with free will, as long as you don't claim it as yours.

swee thnks ill give this an try, ive already got an vinal pack on its way for my gc,and ive already replaced my led with an dark purple one, ill post pics when im done lol
is it also possible to put the old one back in or is it glued down?
ROFLMyWaffle

Yeah, you can put the old one back in if you already have another. I just ordered 2 jewels from nintendo for only 6 bucks with shipping! All you gotta do is swap em out with the tabs (as long as you don't glue em down) that you push em in with. Once I redo this, I'll post pics.

My GCN :). Vipered, of course!
BTW: the best method to split the two parts of jewel is to put it in very hot water- the glue will get much softer and you will be able to split it using your hands and nails :). Cheers.

Wow, I like how you took that. I think I might do the clear mod even though you gotta cut out the top of the lid. I like your halo ed. xbox too :D Thanks for the tips. Also, I'd like to know, did you used oven cleaner? I never got a chance to try that and If you did, I guess it worked really good.

The box is actually: a v 1.1 mobo, Samsung drive from Xbox 1.2, european ranslucent- green case (not Halo edition- I was thinking about having a crystal case, but I preffered the green one ;p), WDC 200GB hdd, Executer 2.1 (gotta change it to an Executer 3 CE :P) and I may add 64MB RAM soon ;). Oh, and I changed the fan to a 12dB PAPST- damn it's quiet xD. Pretty good box ;)
If you wanna split the real jewel from the black plastic just drop it into boiling water (and stop heating the water ;p). Give it 1-2 minutes and you'll be able to split it very easilly. I used some "cellulose resolvent" to wipe the black paint off of the jewel and a bit of silicon to stick it again. And a dremal to cut the hole. BTW: the first GCNs shown by Nintendo have the same jewel as mine- with a hole to see the disks. I don't know why they covered it in the official version ;\. The would be looking pretty sweet.
ROFLMyWaffle
02-08-2005, 10:43 PM
ok. I C. I do wonder why they changed the jewel. Where do you get cellulose resolvent then? A paint store or is that the chemical name for something like nail polish remover? I also hear you can use mineral turkumtine or something like that. I think I'll do the window mod like yours but in the center or something. Then I'd put the labels on one part of the disc so I can read em perfectly. I do like how you took this mod though.

Yeah, I was a little bit unsure about how to translate it to english ;). I'm a polish guy living in Denmark (not native danish speaker) and the danish name of this stuff is pretty close to it's polish name, but I had to check my dictionary to change it to something that you can understand ;). Anyway it smells like something that you wouldn't like to drink xD and it takes the paint pretty smoothly. I asked for it in a normal paint store. Take a jewel with you to the store and ask someone about what you can use to wipe the paint off.
Anyway: I gotta get at least one more jewel, as my own is all scratched and looks like **** ;p.

i learnt brasso is brilliant for removing the picture.. doesnt scratch so u get a perfect finish.. even if u sand down and use brasso, brasso will clear up anything. even scratched CDs.
ROFLMyWaffle
02-09-2005, 08:15 PM
Ok, first of all A. Z.: Ok, that's a good Idea. I bet a paint shop would tell me what I need. I might try brasso like hrtlnd said. Second of all, Duey2k: R U Serious! A sticker? That really sucks. I bet if you bought a new jewel from nintendo.com, it'd be painted, or is it just a flat top with a sticker insted of even a jewel? That would really suck. Third of all, Duey2k: SWEET BACKLIGHT!!! I WANT A TUT FOR THAT REALLY BAD!!! How did you wire that in? Thats so sweet. Please post a short tut or something. And forth, HRTLND, IS THAT YOU!!!! R U THE GUY THAT SANDED DOWN HIS CONSOLE FOR A FULL SIZED DVD ON PHEATON FORUMS!!!
EDIT- Ok, one more thing Duey, I see you are a retailer. Do you have a 50mm gcn fan I can buy? I broke mine
Duey2k
02-09-2005, 11:19 PM
the new ones are basically a freaking flat top with a foil sticker.....you can tell by looking under hte lid it will only have a little circle instead of the 3 holes for the jewel to lock in place.....
i made a small tutorial on my site www.duey2k.com/info
the lighting in one of the pics is a CCFL...i done suggest ya do it becase if the inveter, leds are much easier. im making a tutorial this week for leds and ccfl later.
as for NGC parts....slim picking. ive been searching for a lighted replacement and have tried about 10 diffrent ones with no luck...as for extra stock fans...none currentall in stock.
im not currenatally that clear on the fourm rules about retailers in the fourms so i shy from listing my products or talking about my sites....

Yes thats me on pheaton forums.. EnterTheHatrix AKA Hatrix AKA hrtlnd if u check my AIM name, its hrtlnd223322. So obviously. I would have named myself hatrix on here but id already registered months ago, and I dont remember doing it.
Duey2k, Ive been looking for replacement GC fan sinse i blew mine up with an overload of LEDs sharing the same power source. I put LEDs behind the controller ports if you want a diagram for it, NP i can supply one...
O
O ooo O
ooo
O
Say thats the back of the controller port, the pin numbers are:
123
456
1 and 4 give you 3.4v. 4 is +, 1 is -. just wire up some wires to it, attach the LEDs to the wire and bend it over the top so the LED is against the hole on the top of the controller port. If you have a look youll see hwat i mean. glue the wires in place on the top of the PCB to secure theLED in place, dont glue the LED in place, the glue will prevent you plugging in the controller.

was saying i was looking for a replacement fan (not stock) with a led in it...as a easy replacement to resell....
and ROFLMyWaffle was the one needing the fan cuz he treashed his....
but if you got a fried NGC...ill purchase what ever parts you wanna get rid of. I can always use the stock.
too many leds...mine had 20 right now and is about to get 6 more....where did you take your power from? next time you might want to try getting it stright from the input and keeping it independant from the actual system. I may add some omore wires but youll avoid trasing your system.

all 3 of my cubes are working.. better yet im looking for a NES shell for a gamecube mod, can anyone point me in the direction of getting a NES shell in the UK?
The fan can withstand 4 LEDs from its source, the main power can withstand another 4, which is 8. the controller ports can take 4, 1 each, thats 12, the original LED, 13... the digital port can take a few others, 15.. where else can you steal power? I blew my fan by having about 8 LEDs on its connection going all around the cube.. Im not bothered i got a 40mm (loud but still works).
where else can power be stolen safely? u can have more LEDs on the fan but i noticed it makes the power LED flicker.
Duey2k
02-10-2005, 03:51 PM
you can take them all stright form the power supply, since its a 12v and my other cube has 14 running off the fan...
also ive got a few NES cases was that i keep for parts (have yet to list them) i would be willing to sell one but shipping to UK is gunna be like $18
is this site mostaly UK?

Yo, I'm back. hrtlnd, Yeah, I thought u were the one from Pheaton forums because I wanted to IM you to get some pics of your mod and I saw that name. So can we see some pics of the finished product? Duey, You might just wanna call up nintendo and find a place you can get a bunch of fans compatible with the GCN ( For future reference, the gamecube is supposed to be reffered to as the GCN because NGC is already reserved for Neo Geo Color :D ) and mod them yourself, then sell those. You still gotta do the work, but then they're prefabbed and sure to fit and work. Also, I do not think this is mainly uk. I live in Fl and they'd probably make it co.uk if it was uk. Also, thanks for the info about the CCFL. I'll prob put in LED's with some hot melt to make it look blurry so you don't really see into the case. I was wondering though, I'm not an expert when it comes to electronics, so I was wondering if I needed a 100 ohm resistor on each cathode of each led. I hear you need one pretty much everywhere. Please help me out on this. Oh yeah, thanks hrtlnd for the controller port diagram, Im gonna check that out. Man, I've got so much to say. I was browsing your site and saw that you buy jewels for $3.50. That's not such a great deal. A bunch of people are probably gonna kill me for this but head over to store.nintendo.com. You can get 5 for 15 bucks including shipping. If people bought some and had em shipped right to you, they could make like 25 bucks by selling you 100. You might wanna just buy em from nintendo or for cheaper that 2.00 so you're not getting jipped. How well is business anyway? I've never heard of your site until you started talkin on here so I doubt you get much. It's not an insult. I just wanted to know if you're doin good cuz I know how hard it is to run a business.

omfg!! I AM A FUCKING MORON!!! I remember having a small cpu fan that looked similar to the gcn one. I just found it, its 50mm, works with the power source, BUT I CUT OFF THE BLADES CUZ I WAS USING IT AS A PAINT SPLATTER WHEEL!!! THE ONLY 50MM FAN I HAD!!!! I'm working on modding it with an 80 mm one ive got

lol...yea i was talking to nintendo but they will nto give out any info...as they want to be the only company to service there items.....but its better than the runaround i got from MS :)
and your right...just never knew they offered them....looks like ill have to change that..watch i get an offer form nintendo offering me 100 jewels :D
was asking about the uk cuz ive been coming across a good amount of members in the uk...im in ohio.
you dont have to put a resistor each led...you just have to do the math. you cna run 12 leds of 1 resistor or 12 leds off 12 resistors. you just need a resistor rated at for the proper amps. for example blue is nice color to work with....with all the leds in my white cube i dont use a single resistor and it all comes from 12v. but red is kinda fussy....freaking resistors everywhere.
as for my site...its fairly new . Ive been building it for about 6 months and actually hasent had its realse yet as its piggybacked on my personal site. Once im ready ill give it the final push, and them some actual advertising. Ive really only posted it on a few sites and by word of mouth but already had to rais the prices to keep slow the business down...(i personaly think my mod prices a freakishly high) but when i look at other sites they look low....but eventually ill relase tutorials of all my mods so everyone can do them.

lol yeah. Although I doubt nintendo goes around finding people to buy their junk (or stuff if you think junk sounds like its crap). It's kind of funny though since there's no warranty on the gcn. My friend had his laser fixed. We tried to change the pot value, but I guess the laser was just dead. They came and repaired it and didn'te even say anything about the Viper GC in his cube. lol. I bet the worker didn't care. He doesn't get paid to gripe to people about illegal mods. :p And yes, your prices are freakishly high to me. I saw your Viper without install for $86! You should just take the page off till you're done or people might get the wrong idea and not bother coming back. I also found a cpu cooling fan and heatsink for 5.99 which comes with a 50mm fan. I think you gotta cut it but that s not too much of a problem. just trim screwholes short so they dont extend the whole fan. I'll prob. buy the fan assembly off ebay just cuz its even cheaper that the fan alone and i could turn around and sell the rest of the bits. For now, my sit. is pretty funny. I got this big 12 in. fan next my cube on high while I'm on it. Well, I've got no more questions for a while. I'll keep my eye on this thread till monday (I order my Viper GC and new fan assembly!) All I gots to do is sit down and watch the cartoon network!
EDIT- Oh yeah! Another thing, You're from ohio? Where at? I'm in Canton/Akron like 3 times a year. Y? Cousins and cuz all the little chick with the crimson lips say cleveland rocks!!!

ROFLMyWaffle
02-11-2005, 04:21 PM
hahaha. That's a great idea. No stickers means no proof!
hrtlnd
02-11-2005, 06:18 PM
well, might aswell.. if your laser burns out, buy a 2nd hand cube, replace the laser, and return the cube and go "its not working i want a refund" and because its 2nd hand, theyll do it without signing any forms.
ROFLMyWaffle
02-13-2005, 04:28 PM
The only problems I can see with this are:
1. You gotta buy the cube when you need to repair your current one or else the limited warranty would go void
2. Some stores will only give you In-Store Credits which whould really suck. For something like this, just go to sears. They give cash back.
hrtlnd
02-13-2005, 07:16 PM
Well no, gamecube has no warrenty sticker, plus its 2nd hand, so i take the bits out the 2nd hand cube and replace with mine. i then return the cube within 24 hours and say i want a refund because it dont work.. they wont give me store credit because its a faulty Item and i had a receipt.. the bonus is because its 2nd hand i dont have to sign any forms and when it goes back to Nintendo for repairs, because it was 2nd hand they dont know if the original owner had fucked with it or not. They cant exchange a 2nd hand console for another unless they have one, and even then they should give you the option to cash back. Just ask for cash back and say you want to buy a new cube else where! worked for me.
ROFLMyWaffle
02-13-2005, 09:17 PM
hahaha. NOICE!
well here's another minor problem:
You gotta have 100 bucks for that day even though ur gonna get it back you gotta have 100 bucks.

Hey wats up I was thinking about getting my jewel laser etched, but I was wondering what place does everyone take their jewels to get laser cut.I have a couple pictures to place on my jewel, but definately want to know were everyone is getting the laser cut service at.The closest thing I have to me is dealing with laser cuts is probably a glass service, probably not the same thing though.Oh I also wanted to know if anyone has used this site for jewel service http://www.xport1.com/ would like to find some of the best sources if possible.I am trying to make it custom so it doesn't look the same as everybodies GC,such as the ViperGC logo it is getting very popular on GC jewels.I am not saying it is a bad thing to put the ViperGC logo on your jewel it is just that I see it is getting pretty popular, and would like to have mine custom so it looks different than any other. Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

Actually, I've been thinking about that, and I've really used nothing. I just don't turn it all the way upside-down unless I take out my jewel. I'm still thinking up a way to hold it in. I can see this is really goin somewhere. I thought my remote gamecube would take off, but I guess I'll have to bump that when I finish it off.

if you use glossy paper, try pritstick it to the jewel.. pritstick doesnt fog and it would stick to the jewel, but not exactly perminently.. then you could probably stick the back panel to the front with pritstick. O.o ok, pritstick is just universal! you can use it to stick things and eat and throw at walls like darts!

Lol. Well a couple of days ago i got 2 jewels in the mail so i've been experimenting with products so this is what I used. I started with easy-off oven cleaner. Didn't work so i tried plain white toothpaste. That worked but wasn't fast enough. So i bought some brasso, and it came off perfectly. It didn't remove scratches as may have said, but it did remove the paint smoothly.
EDIT- Ok, I also found a way to stick it together without messing with the image. Take a piece of tape, wrap it around the tab, and cut off some extra. Not all of it so there's still tape sticking to tape to hold it together. Then on the other side, tape on THE SIDE down to the bottom. This way, it holds the layers together lightly. The amount of tape will create a squeeze between the jewel and the lid and hold the jewel in pretty good.

hrtlnd

Vinyl Dye, because it doesnt need sanding or priming. Just spray on a thin coat every half an hour till its covered (thin coats so you dont get pools of wet paint, it takes longer to dry and it ugly) then leave it to cure for about 12-24 hours then it wont chip or come off or anything..

the only beef i have with vinyl dye is when you begin to run out, it fogs up.. normal spray paint just runs out without fogging..

Well, I posted one on the first page, but if you want me to make one for ya, just tell me what you want it to look like.

I like the "mod insinde" jewel i see quite often to fit my black GC. However I am also getting the Core Skin (http://www.gameconsoleskins.com/skins/gamecube/console/hd-gamecube-skin-detail/518/23.htm) so something to fit with that would be nice too :) I might photoshop a jewel myself once i got that skin, probably hard to get the silver/metallic colours printed right :)
Another question, i was thinking about putting another led in the cube (as many of you have) but how exactly cant a tap the power straight from the power supply. I did some from the fan of the cube allready, but dont want to tap of too much there ;)
Tia :D

you can tap everywhere. Controller ports, original PWR LED, mobo, power board. everywhere. Just browse online and u'll find some tutorials.

White with Red front panel.. side taken out, Plexi screwed on, Eventually Lights will be put in the side.. Ive wired a switch in under the handle to turn the inside lights on and off.. they can be turned on even when the cube is not on. I havent wired them up but im having White Neon Blue and Green either side of the cube. Ill post pictures once its been wired up.

Oh, so THATS the cube u were spraying white. Looks great. I am a bit disappointed how the bba hole turned out, or is that how u were aiming, to make it look round. The only downside to the plexi on the side is that you need to remove it to open it, but no big deal.

Yeh, thats a major down side.. It takes forever!
I put some lights in it yesterday, its cool because in the dark the 2 plexi sheets light up.. I was aiming for a rounded hole, in fact i was going to round all the corners down..

Looks pretty good, the rounded corners are kinda a turnoff though.

I made a slight moddification to ROFLMyWaffle's Viper Jewel image. This one is for anyone who want to replace their jewel and has or is getting a Qoob chip.

I can't really tell that much of a differance, but I belive it is lightly better then mine, the problem is I couldn't find a logo large enough to put there so I had to streach it

Well if you look next to the Nintendo Gamecube part on each, mine is a bit darker and matches, Your's is a bit lighter and really stands out to me.

Oh your right, cool good job, someone should see if they can actually redray the image to make it larger.

Thanks, yeah, I didn't have too much time to spend on it. It's no use to me though cuz I have a viper :D

I too cleared the jewel about a year ago and printed and cutted a logo. I used glossy paper with the hightest quality printer setting. When I made this photo the plexiglas wasn't all cleared out yet:
http://home.planet.nl/~vrie8319/cirkeltje.jpg
After that I made a complete hole and also made the plexiglas nice and clear:

In the casemodding forum you can see how it all turned out :) (complete backlighted jewel using printable logo's)

That's cool. I need duey to hurry up and open shop back up so I can get a laser etched jewel. Either that or I'll have to do it by hand with an exacto blade :D . I don't think $17.95 USD is too much for a custom etched jewel.
