Rumour: Microsoft wants Capcom [Archive]

The latest issue of EGM has a rumor that MS are desperate to make a bid for a Capcom and get them on board as a first party developer. Remember this is nothing more than a rumor.

reported about Microsoft intention of acquiring Capcom in order to make the famous Asiatic software-house a first-party developer.

Obviously, this is something like a sci-fi rumour! Capcom is one of the greatest Japanese software-houses and during its 27 years of activity it has never been a first-party developer.

Capcom acquisition would certainly help Microsoft with Xbox 360 sales in Japan as it will imply the exclusive on several games such as Devil May Cry (which has always been a Sony PS exclusive) and Resident Evil series.

rare was good until they came to microsoft and bungie only seems to have one game for xbox and 360. and somehow ms manage to f*ckup the chance to have the gta series as an exclusive for xbox. Capcom is one of my favorite companies, and the exclusives would be nice. But i'm afraid of what might happen if they come to microsoft

Come on, first it's only a rumour and Capcom is too much of a big company to become 1st party. At best Capcom could merge one day with whatever company (Maybe SNK ahah) but seriously imagine... Forget all those Devil May Cry and Lost Planet. Even Resident Evil! Think instead about Street Fighters, Mega Man... Imagine those old school classics ONLY on Microsoft...

That would be a too considerable loss of money for Capcom or a too big risk to take especially for a company which is best at bringing the almost same product again, modifying it slightly and make big sells!! Nah that would never happen and if it does M$ would dish out... I don't know what but it'd be one of the biggest moves in the gaming industry ever ahah!! Nahh...

Even if this does happen it will in no way secure the japanese market. In fact it might turn japan against capcom ;)

Also as mentioned earlier the companies that Microsoft does have working for them only (1st party companies such as rare and bungie) seem to only have 1 good series. If you think about Bungie you think only of halo.... if you think of Rare you think only of perfect dark... now how does MS feel for having spent all that money buying Rare only to get a mediocre perfect dark sequel...

also if you think of Capcom they are a multi-franchise company, not just a company that got lucky with 1 title and kept going with it... they have megaman, resident evil, street fighter, devil may cry, onimusha, etc... if they limit all these games to only 1 console, they will lose money...

Mech assault was on Ds with microsofts permission, and being they don'y have a handheld it seems there cool with Using the ds as a medium.

This wouldnt happen due to the fact that it would Cost an ASS load of cash

I never thought AMD would buy ATI either but we will know if this is real or not in the next couple year's. Would be a smart move on MS's part, While they are at it they should pick up Square-Enix and Midway.

surely this is interesting. i dont know if this thing will work for m$. this is going to be ridiculous if this **** happen. japanese gamers will be upset if this merge will come true. hell yeah this is goin to be good on m$ part. however it going to be bad for capcom. capcom will just be a puppet of m$ on japan to raise m$ profits but left capcom broke. idont know what capcom company is thinking, if they agree to the proposal of m$. this is a huge upset to asian game companies on japan. manh this is stupid, i dont want a monopoly company begining to acquire japanes game company. lets just stick video games to japanese. remember japanese were the first maker video gamers, dont let the history of video games be change by this monopoly company thats its jobs is to make products on the market to compete with leading product on the market. suck again there next target is mp3 player..

i love japan, but pong was a US invention. Japan Revived the gaming market.

This Power play from microsoft can do alot of things.
on the possitive end, it would Take a serious blow at Ps3's Japanise base gamer, thats intrested in DMC4 and other Capcom soon to be's. It means that capcom can Fund its own games with M$ Cash, which is why exclusive tittles are usally billons of times better then multi console games. and it would Mean Lots of XBLA capcom games.

On the negitive. Wii users will NOT Get Any capcom games including VC, Being that capcom has give SO much to the industry During the classic Era, VC would take a huge loss. All other Platforms lose everything we've all are waiting for. And Almost surely (it happens all the time) when a company is Assimliated into another, you lose Directors and staff (the case of why clover studios died). Capcom the Name isnt as good as capcom the Team

Exclusivity is a Double Edged Sword, It Can Kill the market with Basicly doing what we all fear, give us lame Microsofted(woot wordplay!!)capcom Games (capcom VS windows yay) or give us Mega hits Like Gears of war

Oh no, hopefully they will not buy Capcom. I want to have Street Fighter, Mega Man, Ghouls 'n Ghosts,... on all system. Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Street Fighter are one of my favorite series.

capcom would never do this, what would be the benifit to them? publishing exclusivly on the 360 would be like cutting their own throat.
The 360 has a minisclue % of the market, Capcom gain huge revenue from DS/PSP/PS2 games, plus the future Wii/PS3 sales. It would make no sense to cut off 3 markets that are already much bigger then the 360's and 2 that are going to be bigger then the 360's, especially in japan which is where capcom are from afterall.

I can see why MS would want Capcom, or in the very least why they would want them on board as a 360 only publisher. I doubt tho that it would have a negative effect on capcom as a whole tho if they were to be entirely bought out by MS, the only thing it would effect would no doubt be the home console market. Handhelds and arcades would no doubt remain the same, as neither of these are in direct competition with MS products. Infact I suspect the arcade side would benefit from being able to use modified 360 hardware, which in turn would ease the translation to console.

I honestly can't see MS letting Capcom become just another developer of 1 or 2 games like a few other development studios (tho admitedly those 1 or 2 games are usualy "The" big ones), or even worse end up like Psygnosis did with sony, as in get entirely swallowed up and lose thier identity (I miss psygnosis games, I always hoped for a 3d shadow of the beast or Agony). No I think at the end of the day, A buyout by MS would only be dertimental to 2 things, the Plastation 3 and the Wii, everything else would remain the same.

Still it's just a rumour, and even the big MS can't just buyout companies at will, look at what happened with Sega.

Well as good as it would be for MS i dont want it (dont like the arrogant Sony peeps with her bucketstation 3 aswell) but it would give MS to much power overall and sooner or later they will be like Sony. Nintendo was it before with the SNES and N64. Dont listen to us customers go f... yourself LOL.

competition is good for us customers! Sooner or later i will also have a PS3 but i would say later XD

Now cant wait for my Wii, lets see if its lives up to my expectations ;-)

that is terrible ...Resident Evil 1 was on PS1 FFS. :(

ffs it was also for PC and Sega Saturn... and both versions got UNCUT movie sequences while the PS1 version where censored :P

i personally would like to see RE5 on xbox360, but i dont think it would be exclusive.

capcom already said a while ago that they concentrate on multi-platform titles.

Well MS isn't make handheld like psp or ds this gen. so new Capcom will support ds and psp like befor - for this gen -

Microsofts been trying to buy Companies for YEARS.
They offered nintendo All threw the SNES and N64 Days For the Gameboy licenses, and the Entire company. They tried it with rare and succeeded (nothing good came out of it) Microsoft tried sega, Sony, EA, ubisoft Infact almost any company thats come by it for Exclusivity, They do work out some deals some times for Games but never the whole enchilada.

This Gens all bout exclusives now, Since your not gonna buy need for speed carbon for your Wii if you own a 360.

People dont seem to realise (and certainly MS never did when they bought them over) is that the reason why Rare was so good previously was BECAUSE of the Nintendo influence. Rare software engineers were allowed to work closely with NCL to see just how games were made and by the time Perfect Dark came out on the N64 most of the guys who made it and Goldeneye had left the company.

Rare was offered to Nintendo long before MS bought it and they quite rightly thought at £230m it was overpriced, hence the reason why MS moved in on it. It was never the big coup MS made it out to be because Nintendo knew it was happening all along and removed all of their own IP from Rare. So far Nintendo have been proved right because Rare have done nothing to indicate that they will reach the heights of Goldeneye again.

If MS seriously wanted to win the console war then they only have one choice and thats to buy Nintendo and leave them completely autonomous, let them do whatever they like on MS branded hardware because if they had MS's $Billions and technology at their disposal they would wipe Sony out of sight in Japan even as far as rebranding the console with a Nintendo badge on it in Japan to prevent the MS apathy that the Japanese have.

Well if I was Bill Gates thats what I would do! :D

I agree, I think Rare has purposely screwed over Microsoft by not making any good games for them because they bought them out. Capcom is still a 3'rd party and they're giving even more love to the 360 then I would have expected. But if any game company may be bought out, I'd think it'd be id or Epic. As for S-E, I'm not really concerned about them. They've been really repetative lately, by them making 3 FF7 games, and now making FF12-2.

But really, they've never bought any company out of desperation. When they bought Rare, Nintendo has about 1/10 of as many console sales with the GC as Microsoft did with the Xbox.

thats very far from the truth, the GC and xbox sales are pretty much even, 21million for the cube and 24 million for the xbox. See wikipedia.

Rare have not screwed anyone over, the main people that would benifit from making good games are Rare themselves, so making bad games on purpose would be shooting themselves in the foot. The reason rare have slipped now is because theres hardly any of the original company left, when nintendo sold them, they knew what they were doing, everyone gasped like it was a major blow to nintendo, but Rare as we knew them for banjo, goldeneye, jet force gemini and the other classics are no more.
Look at the first Timesplitters game and you'll see where half the goldeneye team went.
Viva Piniata seems to be getting decent reviews tho, it has to be said, so maybe they can still produce good games, just not in the same league as the original team.
Its a shame it all went like this, id have loved to see what rare could do with the Wii.
