Xbox 360 Firmware Hack Brings Good news for DL DVD Manufacturers

Digitimes are reporting that the 360 firmware hack had resulted in an ever growing demand for Dual Layer DVD discs. Before the hack, sales of the respective media were slow due to a limited need and expensive price.


Before the hack became widely available, sales for DVD+R/-R discs had been sluggish due to its relative high retail price and limited applications. Demand is also driven from the extending penetration rate of DL-support recorders, the sources added.

Global DVD+R/-R DL disc shipments are expected to reach 100 million in 2006 and should double in 2007, according to Japan-based Fujiwara research. Taiwan players are more optimistic about shipment trends, projecting sales of more than 100 million DVD+R/-R discs for this year.

Current DVD+R/-R DL disc shipments are dominated by Taiwan makers including CMC Magnetics and Ritek, with CMC taking about a 20-30% share of the market while Ritek has 60-70%. With Japanese vendors placing more emphasis on Blu-ray Disc (BD)-R/-RW and HD DVD-R deployment, Taiwan vendors should see stronger side benefits accordingly.

I have noticed the price drop's myself, when the FW hack came out i paid $20 for a 3-pack of Verbatim's and now the same 3-pack is $11.99.

$3 per disc isn't too bad....maybe I'll wait for a sale and get them even cheaper.

Before that, sales for Mini DVD-R's were practically nothing, and they were way expensive.

As far as I remember its just standard to put every 360 game on a dual layer disk no matter how big it is, they probably hoped its better for copy protection.

i'm not too sure but i think the 360 games have dummy files that fill up the disk not the actual game itself. So even if the game was 1g you would have dummy files to fill up the rest of the disk. and if this is true when a real mod comes out we would rarely need a lager format because we could discard all the dummy files when making a backup. I admit i could be wrong though.

So even if the game was 1g you would have dummy files to fill up the rest of the disk. and if this is true when a real mod comes out we would rarely need a lager format because we could discard all the dummy files when making a backup. Yep, most games do have dummy files, you can easily tell when you backup a 360 game. A standard 360 game is about 8 gigs, maybe a little bigger, and 6 gigs without the Dummy File(s). And that's with leaving every file in it, not even deleting the non important files like all the extra language files, and such.

As for a new media, no...there really wasn't a need for a new media, Sony just sucks at making Hardware and that's why they had to go with Blu-ray, because they couldn't get the PS3 to do textures and compression like the 360 can.

Actually I can't agree with the 360 being the cause of this.
CMC Magnetics and Ritek are the companies mention and everywhere I go I read that people use Verbatim discs for their 360.

I buy a great deal of Ritek DVDs because my local Chinese computer store sells them at a great price and they are dependable.

hi there, thank you for the interesting input. i am not on sonys side, i am on nobodys side, as i am planning to buying a wii as well and maybe a 360 if m$ gets off their asses and finally arranges to have more than 2 interesting games.

to keep it short: sony is split into different divisions. tv, gaming, notebooks..etc are different divisions, acting for themselves.

in my opinion most division except for the gaming division produces sh*t. the mp3 players totally suck, md was a joke, the TVs are ok and the hifi components are ok as well.

personally i own from sony a vcr and a ps2, that's all. apart from that: sega dc, ngc, xbox 1, pc...etc

C well for the games (ps vs xbox) i guess that's just a matter of personal taste. personally i rather see wargames as kiddie stuff, not that i suggest them for kids, but i think it is childish or adolescent to enjoy running around killing something that looks like real people and shooting at them with guns that really exist. that's why i don't enjoy most pc-games, i just can not relate to war FPSs, RTS games, strategic builder games ..etc. i'd rather sharpen my mind and reactions by playing puzzle bobble with my mates.

i just put the 360 down when the is a rational reason for it. in my opinion it is a nice console but it has been around for a year and most of the games have been at best mediocre. i have four consoles and for me there is no point to buy me another expencive console to play the same games in a bit better resolution, finally there are some interesting titles out and if they can keep that level i will think about maybe getting me one. i guess it depends which console needs less "micropayment" to play the games you paid for in a "full" version.

you are wrong about "the wii and me" (sounds like an advertisement, right?) as i am seriously thinking about getting me one. that thang sounds like a lot of fun.
