with the evidence of more sources knowing how to dump GC ISO'S , the question on every ones' minds must be how do they do it ? Anyone have any ideas ? don't be afraid to state your theories !

There could be several ways to dump the GC discs, just to name a few:

1) they use the PSO hack to upload a dumper. This one is basicly uploading the raw data or the files to the PC. Either using there own uploader or an .DOL that uses PSUL or PSOLOAD. (this is the most likely way).

2) they use a DVD reader or burner which can read the GC discs. In order to read it they probably have modified the firmware of the drive. (could be a way, but it is unknown whether the GC uses the same psysical way or storing the 0's and 1's on the disc as DVD does (pit-length, trackwidth, etc. etc)).

3) they upload a .DOL which dumps contents of the disc to a memcard and read that with a memcardreader. (too much hassle, it would take approx 375 swaps before having a full 1,5 GB image, but nice for just showing banner files ;) ).

Just in case someone thinks I have such a program, I haven't so don't PM me for it!!

Note: the disc format isn't ISO, it is propriatary :D.

If I'm not mistaken (most unlikely :p) NR discs and GOD's are completely different ?

PS: Sjaak's nr.1 method is very likely the way they used to dump the files on hd...

the first option you gave is most likely the way they did it seeing as that is how others have done it :D

I said behind every option the probability :)

Indeed the first option would be the first option to try and to do, however there are a lot of people hacking dvd firmware. If someone could for example fools the dvd into thinking a valid disc is inserted, the normal routines to read the disc could work. So ripping would be much quicker then using the BBA method, especially with thoses 500x dvd readers coming out :D Dunno for sure whether this one is as easy as I stated here, and will depend on the type and make of the dvd reader/writer....

The last one was just something in reply to the post on the main page (something about bannerfiles ;)

well.. even if you could fool a DVD reader to identify a GC disc (eh? that makes no sense!) , it would still be unable to read it..

People have tried to make dvd drivers to read the gc discs but their format and layout are much different to a normal dvd.. basically you couldnt just open it in windows explorer and copy and paste! Plus there is apparently a second barcode within the disc information that stops the discs from being read...

I wasn't talking about opening it in windows-explorer, but pure sector extracting. After that it can be read by several tools... And why can't it be done by the firmware? After all the firmware converts the pits, read by the laser, to datablocks (stripping errorchecking, -correcting and positioninfo from the datastream).
