View Full Version : There's no Fooling the Wii
Here's some great news for those who hold high hopes for the Wii's control scheme. Mike Chrzanowski who is working on a Marvel Superhero's game for the Wii, says within a week of testing, the reliability of the control scheme went from 60 or 70 percent reliable, all the way up to 97 percent! Don't expect the Wii to get all confused just yet :).
But on the day of the interview, and the day the game comes out, there will be no — OK, almost no — fooling the Wii.
"Now in some cases people will do something that's not going to work right, and in that case they're probably going to have to adjust the way they do it," said Chrzanowski, a black Wii development controller in hand. "But that's a rare case."
He wasn't talking idly. He said a system developed by a Vicarious colleague, Jesse Raymond, a few weeks ago has been crunching the data of dozens of players who have tested the game on the Wii, analyzing the results of requests for players to do 10 swipes in a row or 10 stabs in a row, recognizing which moves the current version of the game fails to recognize as the intended gesture, tweaking the code, checking the pool of data from the gesture trials again for any new misunderstandings, repeat and recode, again and again. The result? "Within a week it went from being 60 to 70 percent reliable to 97 percent reliable," Chrzanowski said.
Like he said, don't expect the Wii to get confused.

Ive full confidence in the Wiis controller since I dont believe that Ninty would risk an entire console on an untested controller. Yeah theyve had some doozies, Super Scope, Powerglove etc were all trash, but they were optional things, not the backbone of the consoles.

by thinking that it is a gimmick, by thinking it is barely more powerful than a gamecube, and by just thinking it is going to suck because it isn't the $600 rip off we call the PS3.

You get so much for $600. Sure, that price may be too big for little kids, like yourself. The PS3 is still getting killer apps like MGS4 and FF13. It also has blu-ray, sure, it could fail. But still, titles like Cars, Spiderman 3, and most likely the star wars series will be on blu-ray. Those would look beutiful on a projector.

little kid thats a good one, i don't go around calling people idiots. thats childish.
Well the PS3 is definately no bargain. I could care less about movie coming to bluray, the PS3 is suppose to be a video game console. sure final fantasy XIII and MGS4 will probably be cool. are they release day titles? how many tripple A games does the PS3 have on release day? maybe down the road the PS3 will be a better value. if bluray loses though, the PS3 becomes one of the biggest ripoffs on the market.

Two thoughts. One, 97% is still far too low. I hope they can improve on that before release. Two, this bodes ill for companies which don't have programmers and testers of the calibre of the Vicarious team (who developed Terminus and ported Doom 3 to the Xbox - they're serious times). Games from publishers with smaller QA departments, or games rushed through testing, could suffer a new class of control problem that you don't get from gamepads. I expect to see reviewers ding a lot of games for ignoring or misunderstanding your actions.

but look at games like super smash brothers, its made by nintendo and doesn't use the Wiimote, it uses the classic controller, so nothing says that every game has to use the Wiimote. if nintendo is using just the classic controller for a game, i'm sure more games will follow.

I agree with daps in that the wii is a gimmicky 'cube just like ds is a gimmicky gba.
be careful though, gimmicky does not mean bad. It's working for DS right?
it's certainly not a hardcore gamer's machine, except for franchise fans. PS3 i think is going to be very good. Sony is due to have a successful media and hollywood is pretty strong behind blu-ray. In no way is ps3 some new fresh idea, but gamer's don't want weird ****, we want games

We could have said the same for the 360 this time last year. But hey, that changed. We did not know how amazing live would be, or how fun some of the arcade games would be. I don't believe we knew they would be online games as well.
So there is alot we don't know probably.
