Here's a very extensive and detailed video of Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam for the Nintendo Wii. The video below comes complete with commentary too and offers a great look at what the Wii has to offer.

some people do talk random stuff when it comes to the wii.

if you dont like the pad, dont buy the console, when the psx was released, you had to use the controller with its crap dpad, sony didnt lay on a variaety of options, when the xbox was launched we had to use that stupid big lunk of crap they gave us as an excuse for a pad too. people complaied when nintendo 'forced' people to use analogue in the N64, and that feature is used in almost every game thats released today.
the wii controller is essential to enable the games to be played how the designers are designing the games, the pad lets you control games in ways that were impossible with a conventional pad, why do people seem unable to understand this.
It may not be apparent with tony hawks, but alot of games would be unplayable with a normal pad, please can we withhold our judgements to how good or bad this machie is going to work untill its actually released.

Ooh the Wii will suck becasue ill lose the remote all the time, so do you consider not getting a TV/DVD player ect becasue it uses those damn wireless remotes?
People were saying the exact same thing about the Nintendo DS, ooh, the DS will suck because ill lose the stylus all the time. Petty excuses to bash a machine imo.

Im not saying here the console is crap (for a change) but comeone using the remote instead of the Controller, whats the point, pick up tour tv remote and imagin playing a game, thin long and not as comfy as the Wii controller.

Thats what im saying, whats the point in making a pad if it seems to only use the remote????

the pad meaning the retro controller with the twin analogues you mean? that is aimed as an extra add on to play the virtual console and doesnt include any motion sensing abilities. if the game uses motion sensing, then they have to use the remote, i cant see a problem with it being used in the video, it may feel wierd but then so did using an analogue controller for the first time.

No what im saying is what is the point in having the controller, if the Wii is going to have games that you use the remote like a controller.

As you see in the movie, the guy is using the remote like a control pad, so whats the point?

In games like Sonic Wild Fire, Downhill Jam or Excite Truck, you hold the Wiimote like a regular controller, but you don't use it like a regular controller. It's a very nice idea to create a controller you can use and hold in several ways, depending on the game.

We know of at least four completely different control schemes, all using the same controller: Wiimote freestyle (Wario Ware, WiiSports), pad-style (Excite Truck, Downhill Jam), gesture mode with Nunchuck (Madden) and pointer configuration with or without Nunchuck (Red Steel, Metroid). Red Steel for example uses two different methods, freestyle and pointer. Farcry probably uses pointer and pad schemes. Different games require, or at least benefit from different control schemes, and with the Wiimote design, you only need one controller for all those schemes. Due to the fact that all relevant tech is part of the Wiimote, it's also very cheap to create many more input devices for other games, like the Zapper or a steering wheel.

And due to the symetric layout, it's well suited for left handed people (the Wii is supposed to have an option to reverse the d-pad, to hold the Wiimote the other way around in pad mode).

For people complaining about the controller, it is called innovation, which Nintendo is always pioneering, first with the SNES, then the N64, then the Gamecube now the Wii. I am tired of having two shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, one d-pad, and 4-6 regular buttons. The Playstation controller has not changed since PS1 which was over a decade ago. They tried to do something new with the boomerang and people jumped all over it, so it was scrapped and guess what, for that shiney new $600 console, you get the same dual shock controller. I applaude Nintendo for trying something different and I will be in line on launch day.

I've heard that the design is actually really good for the motion sensing. I've read a couple places that the PS3's standard controller design with motion sensing actually makes it difficult to tilt it correctly. With the hand grips and such, you tend to tilt it at an angle(left and forward, etc), as opposed to tilting it flat to the left or right. Since the Wii-mote is flat, you tilt it with more control by holding it with your finger tips instead of your whole palm. Actually try tilting your PS2 controller, then try it with something like a NES controller. The PS2, especially for me, ends up feeling cramped and uncomfortable since my hand is locked onto it. The NES controller I end up holding with my finger tips, and aren't locked into my hand/wrist position as much.

just how dreary and boring does your life have to be that you got sick of gaming the way its been played for ages? and hence yure looking for DIFFERENT ways of playing games. well your wish seems to have gotten answered the same way the ds is a NEW way of playing OLD games, thats what the wii seems to be. a way to play EACH AND EVERY other game thats been done to ABSOLUTE death, with a remote. YAAY.

now seriously, go kill yourself.
