Greetings.

the details of my wife's gently used, never dropped or mis-handled PSP.

1. Bought new in Dec 2006

2. Never tried to hack it or load homebrew

3. Worked flawlessly until the other day

4. Recently ran the game Katamari which required a firmware update by the game

5. a couple days after running Katamari and another game, some RPG the unit failed to turn on.

6. Green Power light comes on and will NOT shut off unless battery is removed.

7. Screen is black, no power there.

8. Tried using power adaptor, power adaptor with no battery, removed memory card and UMD, etc, same problem, green light stays on, no power to screen, green light will not shut off unless power is removed.

Has anyone gotten this same problem and does anyone have any suggestions to fix it?

thank you

Well if you got it in December 2006, then you can travel through time. :)

I am guessing you meant 12/2005. If so, you are still under warranty. Use your 1 year warranty to get a new one and hopefully you wont get a ta-082 model or one with 2.71.

yeah I did mean '05 :)

I actually just want a working PSP, no plans to try to hack this one as it belongs to my wife

I still have the box, not sure if I have the reciept but it was on a credit card so I have that document through my bank... anyone have a link to sony service to initiate a return authorization [yeah I'm lazy]

thanks!!

I'm still very curious to know if anyone has gotten the same symptoms. I looked far and wide for a similar report and found nothing... seems very weird as bugs go.

This seems like a brick, but you said that it worked after the firmware update, so I'm clueless. Call Sony and ask them about the matter.

I just initiated a service call to Sony. It was actually very easy to do through Sony.com. I had anticipated having to navigate through layers of menus to find customer service and repair and was very pleaased to have found it in about 2-3 mouse clicks.

I'll report back my experience with sony service as it happens in case anyone else here can benefit from the info.

Hopefully they hook you up quickly. I have read from other users that you are most likely going to get either a 2.71 or maybe even a 2.8 fw on your psp. Lucky this one is your wifes! :)

Just a quick update:

I found time to call Sony Service after getting an e-mail response within 24hrs of the time I placed the e-mail service query the other day. There were a LOT of operator options to navigate through and it took some time before a voice said "Press 0 for a customer service representative". After that I answered a series of usual questions and since I had proof of purchase I was told they'd send a return authorization to replace the unit with a refurbished unit within 24hrs. The refurbished replacement will have a 90 day warranty or, if my remaining 1 year warranty is more time, that will still take effect... so the point is, I'm still covered for a year from original date of purchase.

I'll report back when I ship it as to how long it takes and what the results are when I get the replacement

Greetings.

Luckily our warranty was not up and after contacting Sony, a much easier & quicker process than anticipated, I got a return authorization number via e-mail and a 30 day window that the RA would be valid. The curious thing was, the e-mail was very specific about what to send back. It clearly and explicitly stated that only the PSP unit, the Battery pack and the Power cable were to be included in a well packed box along with a copy of the e-mail and the RA written clearly on the box, and that anything else would not be accepted or at least not returned. No mention of my proof of purchase was mentioned in the instructions. So I sent it back using USPS Priority Mail which I insured and got Delivery Confirmation for. In like 3 or 4 days I got an e-mail from Sony asking me to FAX my proof of purchase and it gave me 10 business days to do so or they would send the unfixed unit back.

I was a little confounded since I COULD have put that in the box when I packed it but was following the instructions in the e-mail which made no mention of POP... soooo.... I went on to my bank's website, found the debit/credit card listing for my purchase and copied and faxed that transaction listing along with my bank info, and then I waited.

About a week or so later I got an e-mail with a tracking number for UPS. A couple days later a received a small box in the mail via UPS that contained a newly refurbished PSP, Battery and Charger.

The new unit is warrantied for 90 days or the rest of the original warranty, whichever is greater. In my case the original warranty is greater since this unit was purchased on December 23rd 2006.

I have not checked to see which firmware is on the new PSP but as stated previously, this unit will NOT be hacked or messed with as it belongs to my wife.

I will note that for those of you who don't have a current warranty, Sony did offer to fix it at a price if I could not find my proof of purchase. I have no idea what that would have cost but I can only assume it would be less than buying a new one. [I mean its Sony, not APPLE right???]

I hope my experience can help someone with their malfunctioning PSP.

If there are any questions, simply reply to this thread and I'll answer them.

thanks

MaXConsole has always been good to me for the new consoles. Its usually the one place that has valid information on opening new possibilities for my newer consoles prior to any place else. I have just about every console that has ever come out and most of 'em are modded, have backup units or flash carts.

I'm a huge fan of this site and it was nice to be able to at least contribute something that may be of value.

cheers

This just happened to me. I updated my firmware to 2.71 and it turned off, now does this when it turned back on.

i did have plans to use homebrew..but updating firmware like this shouldnt have done anything like this. anyone have any suggestions?

apparently it seems that this means the thing is broken if they replaced yours?

Well heres my deal. I purchased a psp from a friend with this same problem for 50 dollars, as he did not want to deal with the trouble of trying to fix it.

Now im fairly good with electronics, so i figured i would be able to fix it myself. also, he purchased his psp off of ebay, used. so he had no warranty of any kind.

So as it seems to me, noone has found the part of the psp that causes this problem?

Its not the power circuit board, motherboard, etc?
the way i figure it has something to do with the power circuit, leading to both the screen and the speakers.

If anyone has any general idea what would possibly be causing this, (partwise) could they let me know? im perfectly fine with pulling the psp apart and replacing things, im just not positive what it could be.

i ahd this same problem i hought the psp was bricked too, the light came on when power was in, so i took it apart and replaced the circuit board that controls the psp power and sqaure, triangle, croxx, and circle button and it worked. so if you can find that piece you should be set to go,.

its not possible to be fixed manually without having UP chip right now. Brickage is caused by messed up flash (software) so its no hardware damage. if u have a UP chip, then its possible to recover your psp

all u needed to do was tap on the battery, start up the psp then hold of the button left of the musical icon and the psp. to the right of the psp sign. and pray. work for me
