I just bought a Belkin CAT5e Crossover Patch Cable to FTP to my Xbox, problem is, from the very first step, the light on the back of the PC won't turn on when I plug it in, does it have to be set up on both the Xbox and PC for it to recognize it as a cable? Or is it just the wrong cable and won't recognize it at all?

Note: I'm running Windows 98SE on a Gateway 2000 PC. In case that makes any difference.

hmm, are you pluging the cable to your pc or via a router.

it does sound like your pc port to me, make sure youve got it installed correctly (mother board disc should do it)

Also if you do have a router that you connect to the web with try pluging the cable into it, i do.

have you tried connecting to the ftp even tho the light isnt blinking?

If you are using a crossover cable, you will have to have the cable connected directly to the computer, connecting it to a router will not work. Here is a great networking tutorial, follow it and you will be connected in no time flat.

Crap, sorry about that. I thought I mentioned that I was conecting straight from my PC to Xbox.

And does it blink? >.> I'm asking this cause I'm not sure if we're thinking of the same light. On my computer, and maybe only older computers, by where you plug in the ethernet cable, there is a green light that comes on when it's plugged in. Or at least the Straight cable does that goes to my router for internet.

So I'm thinking maybe it has to recognize an IP for it to turn on or something, and as for the router, I can't do that cause my router is downstairs...that wouldn't be that much but I live in a 19'th century home that is over 100 feet high for 2 floors. lol. So I need to connect from my PC and Xbox directly.

he he ok, im thinking you have a broadband adaptor not a router.

anyways to check your port goto your control panel in windows and look for network adaptors, if you have something with a question mark or a ! then its not installed correctly.

Have you also checked on your xbox for the ip address (usually ftp://10.0.0.?) make sure you have the login info usually default Username: xbox, Password: xbox.

If all that is correct, what program are you using to connect to your xbox, are you using a ftp program or Windows Internet Explorer.

I'm not going through any Router or anything external. >.> All I am going through is my Ethernet Port straight to my Xbox Ethernet Port.

Anyway, I go into my Control Panel, and then Network, and then it just goes into a list of Client for Microsoft Networks, 10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, Dial Up Adapter, TCP/IP 10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter, TCP/IP Dial Up Adapter. I always do the IP change with the Ethernet Adapter TCP/IP, but it never works, As for Xbox stuff, I haven't changed anything, so it's still set to xbox for both. And I've tried both but they never work(FlashFXP and IE). I'm running Unleash X, do I have to click Start FTP and Reset Network?

Ok I see what you are talking about now. You have a crossover cable connected directly to the Xbox, But the NIC on the computer is not "lighting up" wiht the crossover cable connected, and you are unable to connect the Xbox to the computer. In you network connection control panel make sure the NIC is enabled. When you are at the screen that shows all of your connections, look at the wording under it, if it says disabled, right click it then select enable. or you may want to try and repair it (same method) if none of this works and the lights still dont work your nic may be dead.

BTW you can use a USB modem that is connect to your computer, and an Xbox that is connect to the NIC with a crossover cable, all you have to do is "bridge" the connection, then your Xbox will be able to access the Internet. Provided your network settings are correct.

First, no, it's not connected USB. It's connected through Ethernet, I've only got one Ethernet plug in so I can only be on the net or the Xbox to PC at once, unless I buy a really cheap router that is.

Anyway, what's the NIC? Sorry, I'm a newb when it comes to connecting the two. Although you can be if you follow the tuts perfectly, which I have yet they aren't working...YET. I'm sure you can help me figure out if my Xbox is FTPable or not

NIC is "network interface connector" loosley translated, the place where you plug your network cable in.

Every Xbox is FTP'able provided you have your network set up correctly.

Are you 100% certain you have a "crossover cable" a regular network cable will not work for a direct connect between Xbox and Computer. If you followed the guide I posted eariler "follow configuration 1" you should have no issues connection the Xbox.

Some thing to rember, make sure the NIC IP address, and the default gateway on the Xbox are the same. Turn off, or allow access thru any Virus programs, or Windows fire wall.

What FTP program are you using, perhaps there are some settings in it that need to be changed.

to see if you have a good connection to the Xbox you can try to PING it, if it does not PING than somthing is not correct.

To perform PING in windows(ensure Xbox is connected and on)
1. Click Start.
2. Click "RUN" and type cmd
-------the next screen you recieve will be a command prompt.
4. at command prompt type ping 192.168.0.100 (or whaterver you Xbox IP is)
-----after a few seconds you will recieve text telling you of your status. IF you have nothing then network is set up incorrectly. If it pings then you Xbox is connected.

Follow the trouble shooting section of the guide

Well....I have no NIC options at all, but my guess is that it's on if I can get internet. I click CP, I then click Network, and it gives me 3 tabs. Configuration, Identification, and Access Control. On first page it shows the 5 (TCP/IP, etc) options I suggested earlier, along with a button that says Add, Remove, and Properties of each of those 5. Underneith that, it shows an option to switch between 2 Primary Network Logons; Client for Microsoft Networks, Windows Logon. And Underneith that is a button called "File and Printer Sharing" that brings up a window that says "I want to give others access to my files" or "I want to give others access to my Printer".

The problem is...you're probably going off XP. I'm running 98SE, that's the problem, no one can seem to be able help me because no one can can give me a step by step guide, or just help because they're all running XP. I don't know where this NIC would be, I don't know where to mess with Windows Firewalls cause they're not where people say they are, I basicly don't know what do. >.<

Sorry for ranting, but I'm just really anoyed about this whole ordeal. lol

EDIT: lmao. I feel really bad now, I wasted all your guys' time because it turned out to be how I expected, the light came on when I fully set the IPs up and turned on the ability to share files with others, I didn't even have to turn AVG off.
