View Full Version : Nvidia CEO: Nintendo Built a Wonderful Game Device
Mercurynews have an interview with the Nvidia CEO and ask him a whole heap of questions on the next-gen. He talks about a range of the next-gen consoles but we found his snipper about the Wii most interesting. He thinks what Nintendo are doing is terrific and believes they have built a wonderful gaming device.
Two out of three of the players have bet you don't need it. Nintendo has bet you don't even need HD for the next five years.
Nintendo's perspective has always been different. The platforms that are being built now are not just game consoles. You use it for all kinds of other kinds of applications. In the case of Nintendo, they wanted to build a game console. They built a wonderful game device. Their focus is games and enjoyment. They will be myopically focused on that. I think that is terrific. Their perspective is different from the other two. If I'm going to buy a next-generation game console, I'm going to want next-generation media.

Well they're kind of giving props to the fact they've focused on great gameplay as opposed to just going for amazing graphics. So they're saying everything BUT the graphics chip is really good since Nintendo isn't concerned with great graphic capabilities. Either way, Nvidia talking up a system that their rival is integral with, still is kind of weird.

Thats rubbish HD will be in millions of homes within 5 years. Probably under 3.
If you go into any electrical store everything has HD stickers plastered all over it. Infact at my local electric outlet all they sell now are HD tv's. Theyre going to want igh def DVD's to go with it. People will desire it and its going to be widley available soon.
Their focus is games and enjoyment.
Thats xbox and playstations focus too. What does he mean next generation media? The wii doesnt have any next gen media? It has a motion sensing controller.
One of the reasons he may have said all this crap is that nVidia bought out UL Electronics who supply parts for ATI chipset. Maybe thats why? What else should we expect from a CEO.

the problem with high def right now is there isn't a real standard. what constitutes true high def? you can buy hdtv's that run in 4:3 that aren't widescreen. there is alot of hdtv television shows that aren't in widescreen. widescreen doesn't constitute as high def. there are so many aspect ratio's with hdtv's right now that there is no consistency, and no standard. i think they need to make a standard for hdtv. i think nintendo sees that there isn't a standard, and alot of people have hdtv's, but alot more don't. you can still run a Wii on an hdtv, so there isn't a problem there. what is high def? according to sony the only true high def is 1080p. which alot of games for 360 and PS3 aren't even going to support. i'm sure games will later. how many people have hdtv's that support 1080p, not that many. the problem with no unified standard for hdtv is that alot of the people that have hdtv's don't support all of the resolutions. i think nintendo is smart for saving money and waiting on the high def thing until the next console.

Well I for one won't buy a HD tv until there is HD tv channels. In Sweden so far there is one that broadcasts maybe 3-4 movies a day. Thats it. Also it will set you back about 40$ a month. Guess I'll wait at least 2 more years. Maybe then it will be worth it.
For gaming I got a 23" LCD screen which I use for my computer and Xbox 360. It will work just fine for Wii and PS3 also.

I think you give way too much credit to Nintendo, theyre all just people after all, no matter what company they work for. I dont think Nintendo have managed to snap up the best of the best and everyone else was left with imbeciles. They can only work to what the budget allows them and market constraints. And as such it seems as though theyve aimed theyre console at an entirely different market.
As far as sheer performance goes Nintendo knew they couldnt compete with Sony or Microsoft, I dont think theyre budget was as large either? So they have tried to make games more fun, mainly by means of the motion sensing controller. We'll have to wait for when its released to see if it is more fun.
Imagine if the wii was actually the PS3 and vice versa. I wonder what the press would have said then. People would be really dissapointed with Sony. If this was the case at E3 and Sony debuted a wii type system, they would never had won best of show. Im not saying the wii is bad, people wouldnt be expecting it from Sony, they want to see a powerful system from them.
This is kind of a transition period isnt it? Just think theyre going to have to be really clever with the the gen of consoles after these. What is the future? All 3 next gen consoles are a bit dissapointing really. Theyre not offering much more than what we had before. Its been 5-6 years since the PS2, XBOX & Game cube. When are we gonna see virtual reality and stuff? What else can we expect? Im more interested in the next next gen lol.

Nintendo actuallyshould have a larger budget then Sony being as they never lose money. I can't remember the numbers but I think Nintendo has been doing much better of financially. When they take a loss on a console, it's very small and made up easily, unlike the other two companies that will take a massive loss for the first year or so.

i agree with you havok, sony and microsoft run in the red with there consoles, while nintendo does nothing but make profits. nintendo can invest as much money as they want into the systems. so saying nintendo doesn't have a budget is a leap, they even made money on the gamecube, if sony had two consoles straight like nintendo did that did kinda poorly with there business ideas sony would be out of the gaming industry. nintendo made money even when they were down. sony can't even make money on a console when it is up, let alone down.
