View Full Version : Nintendo Wii as everyone's Second System - First Overall!
EA's Jeff Brown made a very interesting comment recently, when speaking to Eurogamer he commented that people saying the Wii being everyone's second system is not a dig at Nintendo and will turn out to be very positive, as it will mean that the Wii will be first overall.
Electronic Arts' Jeff Brown has revealed the extent of the publisher's support for the Nintendo Wii, and believes that the console's place as second in line to either a PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 could be very good news for Nintendo.
Speaking to Eurogamer during EA's summer showcase Brown, who is EA's corporate communications VP, noted: "everybody's saying that the Nintendo Wii is so unique that it's going to be the second system people buy, meaning if you own a 360 or a PS3, you'll probably also buy a Nintendo Wii."
"The funny thing is, some people say that discursively, like it's some sort of dig at Nintendo - and what they don't get is that if you're second on everybody's system, you're first overall."

That's a load of nonsense and assumes that everyone will buy a second system. SOME people will also have a Wii as well as something else and that alone won't in any way put the Wii in the sales lead.
IF I buy a console again I won't buy a second one. God, don't people do anything outdoors anymore??

Gamecube was suppose to be everyone's second system; and wasn't. This glorified Gamecube will be the same way. EA needs to make up their mind to continue bashing the Wii or start supporting it. So far its just been a mixed message from them

for the Wii being a different sort of console and it being so cheap, it wouldn't surprise me if it took the overall lead by being everyone's second console. i really expect the Wii to be $199 or cheaper on release day. if it hits the $199 mark it will be the same price as a psp. and the Wii actually will have some games, even good ones at that. i don't know how Wii will do in America, but i have a feeling it is going to do amazing in Japan. just look at the DS. Plus all the talk in Japan is about the Wii. Its different. thats alot of the reason that they always got games that never made it to the USA because they wouldn't have sold well. i think thats changing though. if you look at the sales of games like brain age on ds we are seeing that american gamers also want stuff that isn't the same old thing with better graphics. at least nintendo is trying to do something different, and the game developers are coming up with more and more ideas about how they can make unique games on the Wii. which is going to lead to alot of new franchises exclusive to the Wii. and rumor has it in the newest egm that Dragon Quest IX may be a Wii exclusive. that would definately change the game. the first or second biggest franchise in Japan a Wii exclusive would be huge. so don't underestimate what Nintendo is trying to do because they could really put a bigger dent into sony than anyone is expecting.

Dragon Quest... lol... the last one still had random battles and was turned based. That series isn't going to last long at this rate.

well then all consoles are going to fail besides Wii because they all are the same old games with better graphics. how many times is a halo game going to come out and get get reviews for not being anywhere as good as other fps games but because it is on xbox it for some reason is amazing? i saw a guy talk about that and he doesn't get how games like halo got these huge reviews. i would much rather play half life 2 if i am going to play a fps. at least pc's have a keyboard and mouse.

alright, this picture for the wii is WAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too rosey. the sad part is its simply a gimmick. the graphics are NOT upto par and the control scheme has a lot to prove by me before i trusted it. and assuming many people are EVEN going to get a second system is fine, but assumign they actually will get a wii, as a second system is RIDICULOUS. people say one thing and do another. these "opinion polls" and surveys are the MOST INACCURATE form of research.
besides how will being everyones SECOND system make u the first? arent u second to begin with?
in my opinion the wii is already NOT many peoples first system its their second system of chouce. which may or may not materialise.

The Wii Remote is a gimmick just like the DS. The Wii will be just like the DS and have some good launch titles and then you'll see a ton of them used at your local EBgames. Nintendo is too into gimmicks and people don't want that. People might by a Wii, but don't expect them to keep it any longer than they did their DS. I traded in my DS, should I make the same mistake by buying the Wii?

That's funny, for DS being a gimmick, it sure as hell sells a lot and I love using mine. It's a gimmick that is fun and worth every penny, and I can see Wii being the same thing....fun.

i thought it might be a gimmick at first. but a gimmick is more like when EA released ncaa football with a heisman mode and crows noise and rest of the game was the same as it had been since the first version that came out on PS2 years ago. when your main controller for a console is different than anything seen before, that isn't a gimmick. its innovation. and if the Wiimote is a gimmick what do you call the lame excuse for a controller sony made for the PS3, gyroscopes and no rumble? the ds isn't a gimmick either. look at sales of games like brain age people love playing those types of games. i really enjoy playing sudoku on my ds, on my brain age cart. if nintendo's controller is a gimmick than the hd-dvd add on from microsoft is a gimick, the blu ray drive and the controller on the PS3 are gimmicks. they don't really change anything. the Wiimote changes everything. and i wish people would stop winning like little girls saying the Wii graphics are going to suck because no one has any idea how good the specs are. according to ibm the processor is a super computer chip that is amazingly powerful. ati said that the gpu is going to be amazing. the Wii is going to have a new kind of ram made specially for gaming, that is dedicated to the gpu. the 360 doesn't even have dedicated memory for the gpu. i don't think the PS3 is going to either, its all going to be shared. so unless you know something nobody else does about the specs of Wii don't say its going to suck. it could possibly only be $50 cheaper than a 360 so the graphics may not be as far behind as people think. the blu ray drive according to sony adds between $200-$300 to the price of the console we pay. so if it wouldn't have been included then the system would have cost between $300-$400 for the decked out version. things aren't as clear as some would make you believe. don't underestimate nintendo this time around. they are back and will be the most competitve we have seen from them since snes when they ruled they world. i can't wait to play dragon quest IX exclusively on the Wii!

The DS isn't selling that well and Dragon Quest isn't comming out on the way except for in some stupid sword fighting game:
http://wii.ign.com/objects/826/826840.html
* PSP - 3.63M units (35% marketshare)
* DS - 2.43M units (23.5% marketshare)
* GBA - 4.26M units (41% marketshare)

i think your numbers are a little of considering in the US the ds sold 600,000 ds lites last month in the US alone. and that dragon quest game is coming out for Wii, but according to rumors in EGM if that game does very well then Dragon Quest IX will be coming to the Wii as an exclusive.
http://ds.ign.com/articles/716/716595p1.html this article seems to say that the ds has sold more units in japan this year as you showed total.

dreary79,
we have no idea what Dragon Quest Swords really is, DQIX for Wii was rumored several times, in the latest issue of EGM for example, and your DS and PSP numbers are completely worthless. The DS is way ahead worldwide, and currently outselling the PSP almost 3:1 in the USA (latest NPD) and about 7:1 in Japan (latest Media Create).

I actually don't think the DS is a gimmick, the concepts have all been done before in one way or another. ie. multiple screens date back to the 80s and touchscreens are on MILLIONS of PDA's and smartphones.
However, I do think the wiimote IS gimmicky and doesn't lend itself to many gaming genres at all. And when you take out the wiimote from the equation you have very little at all to set things apart from the Gamecube. You can say, 'oh but the games will be great' but you know just like me that they will have just the same types of games as they had with the Gamecube.
There is nothing at all wrong with sequels, people do want revamped versions of their old games. People who say sequels are bad but then turn around and say the DS is great needs a reality check (Mario Karts 356273526 and Mario Bros 1435266573 anyone? Oh, sorry, it has the word NEW on it that must make it new, right?)

i disagree, the wiimote lends itself to alot of different genre's. you could play rpg's with a single hand, a concept that a controller was made for back in ps1 days. beeing able to use it to pinpoint a crosshair similiar to a mouse on first person shooters. i hate playing fps games on consoles with a standard controller, it sucks compared to a mouse and keyboard. i think the Wii will be enjoyable for me to play fps. people seem to forget the Wiimote is attached to another controller with the extra buttons and analogue stick. plus its not like every game has to use the motion sensing. i don't really see the Wiimote hindering any type of gameplay, but i see it improving it in alot of areas.
