View Full Version : PS3 Cell CPU To Be 65nm In 2007, Possible Price Drop Implied
In speaking to ImpressWatch, Sony supremo Ken Kutaragi stated that the Cell proccessor used in the PS3 will see a reduction in structure size as of 2007. Currently the cell processor is manufactured with a 90Nm structure but in 2007 it should go down to 65Nm. This move will have the advantages of lowering heat output as well as reducing the cost of the PS3. However people who buy the PS3 in 2006 need not fear, if this does turn out to be the case Sony will cut the price when the time is right and not instantly because the cost of one component has lowered.

So if they had this technology in time for the launch, Sony would only be losing $240 per console instead of $300. Yeah, I pulled those numbers out of my hindquarters, but I wouldn't expect an immediate price drop at retail. It just makes it easier for Sony to lower the price eventually. [/Captain Obvious]

personally i dont think sony should really be announcing a price drop for the future when the system isnt even out in the present. With all the failed ps2's im sure people dont want to hear sony say this is how we'll make it cheaper.

Nor would I expect Sony to announce any price drops, since they'd only be adding their future selves to their list of current competitors. But it wouldn't surprise me to see some interpreting the report of "The PS3 will be cheaper to produce within months of its release" with "the PS3 will see a massive price drop within months of its release, possibly even cheaper than the 360". I know that makes no sense whatsoever, but that hasn't stopped some arguments from flying before.

what makes you think itll run faster? its just going to a smaller process cause its cheaper, uses less power and generates less heat.
