View Full Version : Porting PC Games To PS3 Could Take 'Two-Three' Years
We found a bit of of old (well by our standards) but still interesting news, Hiromichi Tanaka of Square Enix stated the creating a port of Windows version of FFXI to the 360 was a fairly swift job due to the hardware, but porting the title to the PS3 would require development alsmost from scratch and would perhaps take two to three years to complete. To me this sounds like good news, as the PS3 hardware is very unique - seeing as it's not so easy just to port games over, developers will be forced to look to be original and produce optimal games for the PS3.
The Xbox 360 operating system shares enough similarities with Windows, he said, so that porting the Windows version of FFXI to the 360 was a fairly quick task. A PS3 version of FFXI, on the other hand, would require redeveloping the game almost from scratch, a process that Tanaka estimated would take two or three years.
As a result, FFXI will emphatically not be a launch title for the PS3. In fact, Tanaka did not commit to bringing out FFXI for the PS3 at any time. He feels that the resources required to port the game to the PS3 might be better invested in a new game that's built from the ground up for next-gen hardware--but his team has yet to make a final decision one way or another.

i think this is good aswell, all the 360 has is p.c games;most of em are 1st persosn and we all prefer to use our accurate mouse then sum shoddy controlelr. Ps3 and Wii should have more console style games which should be good. The 360 will fail when they start to come out, look at the last month crappy sails and lost to ps2. I was once a 360 fan but i realised quite quickyl that the few exclusive sthat are on 360 will come to the p.c andywat, whether it be a few years or not.

PC porting was just an example. 2 years to port a game is not good. It means less games for a system and Gamecubes main failure was less games. :(

Good point but Sony has the best exclusives by a long way, and i have a gd laptop so the 360 is useless unlike the wii and ps3, the gc was also too kiddy and lacked powr. The REAL reason it lost was because not mnay devleopers wanted to develop for those silly disks, on the other hand many devleopers like the ps3 for its blu ray- SE for example. They said we will go with which ever console ahd the largest medium

I'm just afraid that PS3 will lose developers with the lack of hardware sales. I've been a Sony fan forever, but now that the price is so high I hate them.

xbox is amazing for hacking. If XBMC wasn't, then I wouldn't own one. PS2 was the best system of the last group, but to be honest I had more fun with RPG's on the PS1 and the SNES. The only real game I got into on the PS2 were DQ8 and FFX. But I judge systems by good RPG's.
I guess the downside of this article is... we won't be seeing as many ports on next gen consoles. They are making us buy all three systems. They are all so different that I don't know how many games like Prince of Persia are going to be out on all three systems like they were last with last gen. :(

The majority of half-assed games go to whichever console is in the lead, and the consoles not in the lead often get their own half-assed titles. And those games aren't always released cross platform, either.
And when the PS3 isn't in the lead (at this point, it's anybody's game, dependant on what major hit exclusives are lined up), the ports from other systems will look weaker as a result. And the PS3 not being the must-own platform will be an even greater reason for developers not to waste too much effort.
Assuming that there are absolutely no production problems with the PS3, the holiday season will end with the 360 having from 350 to 400% of the marketshare. And while it is unlikely that the PS3 won't sell out at release, with prices on E-Bay going several hundred percent above retail, how will it be in the months that follow? It'll be getting some crappy games anyways, just because it's a gaming console, with its success determining what percentage of crappy games released it'll get.

GC lack of power? It was the most powerful console until 360 came out.
