View Full Version : Kutaragi: PS3 'Clearly a Computer'
Building on Phil Harrison's comments that the PS3 is a computer, SCE CEO Ken Kutaragi has gone into many a detail on how the PS3 will be highly configurable and how it is clearly defined as a computer. He says that Sony never said they'd release a games console and the PS3 is clearly a computer.
"Speaking about the PS3, we never said we will release a game console," he said. "It is radically different from the previous PlayStation. It is clearly a computer. Indeed, with a game console, you need to take out any unnecessary elements inside the console in order to decrease its cost. ... This will of course apply to the PS3 as well."
He continued, saying that making a platform highly configurable overrides issues of cost, and even implied that the PS3 will be made to keep up with new PC technology. "However, the PS3 is a computer," Kutaragi said. "Lowering costs is important but more important is its capacity to evolve. I think the HDD will gain in capacity. If a new technology gets into mainstream PCs, the PS3 will have to adopt it as well. Maybe the Blu-ray drive will become writable. Well, maybe not at this point."
Kutaragi went into greater detail about how he feels the PS3 will be a computer. "The HDD is not the only element which gives the PS3 its computer nature. Everything has been planned and designed so it will become a computer. The previous PlayStation had a memory slot as its unique interface. In contrast, the PS3 features PC standard interfaces. Because they are standard, they are open.
"We put up no restrictions. Because it is a computer, it can interact with anything, freely. If someone is familiar with PC building, he or she can upgrade easily PS3’s HDD."

If I want to play computer games, I will play them on my computer, however if I want to play console games, I will play them on my 360 and in the future on my wii.
I think Sony have about 100 different marketing stragegy idea's and each region just says what it feels like, we have the we just want to increase market share, we don't care if we want to win, we will be the best next-gen console and it starts when we start and of course we have the you are not buying a console, you are being an entertainment center. Something new will come up next week ;).

I would like to thank Sony for helping me decide which Next-Gen Console to get ... looks like a 360 for me. I already have a computer that rivals what the PS3 can do. If I wanted a Sony computer I would have gotten a Vaio. Thank again Sony for making my decision that much easier. Plus with the money I save I can get a Wii to :P
All this "mixed" marketing is just Sony grasping at straws because they know they are screwed in selling this PS3. Yeah I know initial systems will sell out ... but so did the DS Lite. The question is will it continue to sell after all the Sony junkies and die hard fans get theirs. I just can't see a $600 console/computer/entertainment center/web TV/BR-DVD Player/Ass wiper/Dog walker/Dishwasher selling like hotcakes. Just my opinion though. Which is well ... pretty worthless :)

yup, when the PS4 launches they will say the same thing, i remember sony saying the PS2 would last longer then the standard 4-5 years. 2010 you'll all be looking at the $2010 PS4 and sony will say the same things there saying this time, only they'll be hyping the new SUPER DUPER even blue'r ray dvd after blue ray goes the way of beta max.

Im officially calling him little kenny, hes like a retarded little brother. He reminds me of the keeny on dont get eliminated on spike TV. Anything that comes out of this guys mouth is pure horse wash, he doesent know his left from right hand and sureley doesent know one technichal thing about the ps3 besides its technichally the best (his opinion of course). Max Console. I think you should boycott reporting anything that falls out of this chumps mouth. Its almost as if they like to look retarded.
We never said it was a game console. this whole its not a game console is probably the worste strategy ever because in the eyes of 99 percent of ppl. the only thing it is is a game console, and thats what 99 percent of ppl want it for, to play games, nothing else. (maybe a few movies here and there) and since it will stream HD, I dont even really need the blu-ray do I. you can waste your time saying its not a game machine. but let me ask you what the things that say ps3 on the box will be. oh yeah GAMES. what will all the initial software for it be, GAMES. know one will buy this for blue-ray, becuase we all know sony players are the worste, but you seemed to be able to make decent consoles at a fair price in the past amongst all your other sony garbage. I guess we can say goodbye to the last good thing sony had.

If I'm expected to pay £400+ for this thing, then I would want it to do as many things as it can to stop me from looking at how much I paid for it. Why do sony keep on saying its a pc? they will look more and more stupid as when PC hardware advances (give it about 6 months) the ps3 is going to look a bit silly with its non-upgradeable components. Maybe they are comparing it to Laptop PC - but even then Laptops can be upgraded even down to the graphics cards.
Unless sony have a linux development team who are gonna release a PS3 custom distro that has all the apps you could want to counter Windows, sony reps should learn to bite their tongue when talking about PCs.
Maybe someone could write some sort of remote desktop for it, so we can run windows on it to make it seem like a real PC.

Such a cheap trick to justify deterrent pricing!
I'm wondering if buyers will get a keyboard & mouse in the retail package LOL :D

I am sure they do. I bet they release a custom compiler (without 3d support) to us.
PS3 owners will be able to run lots of things in their living rooms. Emulators. Web browsers. Media Players (no media server req). Instant messaging. Video confrencing. DVD rippers. Xvid Transcoders.
He just said it was open. You are going to see PS3 rpms all over the net.
XBOX360 owners get M$ signed games only.

sony really should stop with these kinds of comments. People aren't asking for price justification because its already a set price, people want to know about things like what happend with E3 and all the games that weren't shown that were shown in video form before and game pricing. These comments are making them look senial
