Some dudes have drawn a few graphs of console prices in the past and their respective market share. Effectu say that the consoles with the most success have been priced in the $190-300 price range and that any console over $400 (the ps3 is way over this) has failed to gain a significant market presence.

After doing some analysis of historical console sales and pricing, it has become clear that the price of the Playstation 3 may have crossed over a very dangerous line. Basically, in the past, any console over $400 tanked. By far, the most success has come to consoles in the $190 to $300 range. Obviously there is inflation, but the cost of electronics has continuously declined over time, so console prices have remained fairly consistent. The question is will the price of the PS3 hinder its sales?

And yet the Xbox Premuim pack ($400) still sells more than the cheaper version, showing that people will pay more for what they get. People dont realise yet that Blu Ray and HD DVD will cost a hell lot more than $600 when they come out and its a deal at that price when they see what the standalone versions of HD DVD or Blu Ray players cost, and PS3 can play both Blu Ray and games.

If you were to buy a HD DVD addon for Xbox 360, and a Wireless addon, it would cost more than $600, and PS3 has those build in, and with more powerful hardware.

I expect people to stop complaining about PS3 in a year or so when the GAMES come out just like people got over how good Dreamcast and it's "Soul Calibur graphics are better than all PS2 launch graphics" was and people started playing PS2.

Yes, PS3 is expensive, YES(More then likely) it will have the best games library like PS1 and PS2.

How dare you say that the price is justified by bluray THEN talk about games. Ken said that its not a gaming machine its a computer, its meant for media and not games. The fact is, as a bluray player it is damn cheap, but as a GAMING platform, its ungodly expensive.

people seem to forget sony has one of the best marketing teams in the world and they are still market leaders and with not many xbox 360 sales in japan sony will still lead there for sure.i will get one and so will everyone else that realy wants the best machine.

Even if Sony sells bad as hells , they still will be holding on their pants , with all the background from toerh producst, people shouldnt worry so much about the exclusive abuse on PS3 at the begginign, jsut wait until become fair enoguh, and buy it. Technology will be cheaper on 1.5 year, adn if BR really hits the market, then you will see BR players on every corner and wont be a brutal expenssive add-on as is it today. About PS3 like a multimedia center..(??????) , well that's another history, it won't be that way...jsut a BR player and console. I want to see if that BR lens can hold stronger than PS2's, thinkign that PS1 where very soldi , and PS2 jsut half of that, PS3 maybe won't hold on many hours of continuos play.

LOL

That's the stupidest thing I've heard all day, and it's after 11pm.

This graph is denoted in unadjusted nominal dollars, as opposed to real dollars adjusted for inflation over the 22 years covered by this graph. As such, the graph is as valuable as tits on a nun.

Further, looking at the graph you'll notice that low prices don't ensure success either, and in some cases, like PS2, a higher price led to great success.

Honestly, the kids that made this baseless graph as a means to complain about the price of the PS3 would be better suited getting a job and making some money to buy one.

Is this the same marketing team that brought us Betamax, Atrac, mindisc, and UMD movies? ...oh and lets not forget the PSX, the ~$800 PS2\DVR combo system that almost nobody bought, even in Japan.
