View Full Version : PS3 Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas...
SCEA president Kaz Hirai recently spoke to Dean Takahashi of Mercury News and said the PS3 is here for a long time and will not follow the tradition five year life cycle of a video games console. He also takes a subtle swipe at Microsoft's HD-DVD addon saying this is exactly the thing Sony didn't want to do and questions what they (MS) will do when a game requires 40-50GB of data. Again he bigs up the PS3 price as being more than fair and is confident that Sony have the best next-gen console and will continue market dominance.
"Microsoft is coming out with an HD-DVD accessory for HD movies as an add-on only a year after they launched. That is exactly the kind of thing we don't want to do," he continued.
"This console is going to do much more... If you look at the lack of Blu-Ray on Microsoft, what do you do if the game requires 40 to 50 gigabytes? Put it on three discs?"
Hirai said he is "confident" Sony will maintain its position as market leader once the next-gen battle kicks off, stating: "With the PlayStation 3, we are keeping to our belief that we have the true next-generation console."
"It's all about the games. We all know that. It's about delivering compelling entertainment to the consumer once again. We are well on our way to showing that."

funny i could of sworn the one thing sony didnt want to do from last years e3 was make the ps3 in two editions which wouldnt you know, they have done. I take everything with a grain of salt these days and wait for the final product, I honestly think sony is barking up the wrong tree because if they turn around and join the next next generation in 5 years with the other consoles they would have cut the systems life in half.

Perfect! In 5 years time when 360 and wii are dead, I will get a PS3 - knowing its good for another 20 years after that. Thanks sony, hopefuly by then the angry coders will have figure out how to use your convoluted tools to create some new games, and your console will cost a few hundred less.

I expect that in 5 years I will be digging a brand new PS3 out of the same landfill all the Atari 2600 "E.T" games were dumped in...

Well, I'm a fan of not the playstation, but the companies that produce the games. I will buy one out of need to complete sequels and such. Plus, 700 bucks in the end is still better than buying a pc or having to invest in an hd addon/blue ray dvd add on (if one at all) later. I will love any console over pc, just be happy we don't have to upgrade vid cards, ram, dvd burners, etc. Plus, the fun factor is what will drive my enthusiasm for this system. I will be getting the wii for sure, however a majority of games for xbox come out on the pc....so why play half-@ss graphics when you can dual-core 7900 gt it? Yeah, thought as much. If anything unique and fun comes out for the xbox in more than 2 games for the WHOLE YEAR, then I might consider getting an xbox360 as well. But at the rate they are going with game releases, I don't think so.

They said the ps2 would have a lifespan of 10 years, and also the average lifespan of leading systems is 7-8 years, not 5.
I do however agree that MS isnt doing a good transitional job. They just completely said f the old box. I mean ur supposed to make at least 3 or 4 more tripple A titles b4 leaving. If they had BC up and made new xbox games to work on both systems. I think that would have been smart. It would make the xbox360 librarey seem even better and gave ppl a reason to buy more xbox games (that there not making) since they could fill confident they can play them on there 360 they havent bought yet.
Dont u want to sell software MS, you have a system with an install base stronger than ever. than u say ok now that millions own it, lets stop making any software for it cold turkey. Transition please smart guys damn. NES SNES PSX all had games after there successor. If you want ppl to fill confident in there investement, make sure that u provide a use for it beyond your own vision.
I know a kid at work who just bought an xbox and hes blown away buy it. to bad hes been shafted as far as getting new games. I wonder if hell buy an xbox360 knowing MS may shaft him again by the time he can afford it.
oh whats the topic yeah. sony is a bunch of ego whores that need to climb off the trojan horse.
there is no way ps3 techonolgy will be next gen for ten years. I dont know what law it is but computer technoloogy growth is exponential. It grows faster and faster. they might be barley supporting it. but it will be very old technology by that time.
If sony made hardware that lasted 10 years, we would have just gotten the ps2 last year, and the ps3 in 2015.
oh yeah lol, and anyone who has boughten anything sony knows that it wont even turn on for 10 years. after 3-4 years usually sony hardware just completley fails to work. why cant sony be like nissan

I imagine that aside from the occasional game announcement, we'll be seeing more hype announcements and fewer new details for the PS3 and the Wii. (Not a knock on either company, since that's the way their game is usually played.) But this announcement is hard for me to figure out.
After all, it's not competing in the games arena, but it'll be the leader in the games arena, even though it will replace your computer and won't be just playing in the games arena. What, we can be looking forward to PS3 releases of Sony Office and geneology software in 2012? Are they going to make the PS3 upgradable, so you don't have a stripped down version of the graphics card that was impressive in PCs in mid-2005 several years down the line? (How many PC games look impressive on 5 year old video cards, anyways?) Because unless the PS3 just happens to have massive amounts of untapped power compared to what was shown at E3 2006, it won't be looking that good long before 2016 rolls around.
Then again, what else will the senior executives behind a soon-to-be-launched gaming console say anyways? I'll decide on the PS3 when I can play some games for it.
