Here's a little bit of news we missed yesterday from a third party interview with Sony supremo Phil Harrison. Despite him saying that the belief that they copied Nintendo is stupid, he also made a rather interesting remark with regards to the diverse functionality offered by the PS3 saying the PS3 is a computer and you don't need a PC!

Besides defending the PS3, Harrison took time to evangelize the device, which will launch worldwide this November. In particular he said the Linux-based operating system on the console's hard drive will have enough processing power and non-gaming functionalities to render traditional PCs--most of which use a form of Microsoft's Windows OS--moot in the home. "We believe that the PS3 will be the place where our users play games, watch films, browse the Web, and use other [home] computer functions," said Harrison. "The PlayStation 3 is a computer. We do not need the PC."

They really are after M$. It may work if they don't F it up by restricting the linux part with anti-piracy measures. People will try to write linux software that rips the PS3 game to the darddrive to play from there. That will be very tricky to stop without crippling the PC/linux part.

ummmm, at least 60 percent of PC use if not more is used for work reasons, including the home. Familys buy a PC for its wide range of capabilitys such as writing reports (students) Taxes, banking, accounting, Family photo organizing and Printing, research, internet (full browsing and downloading ability). The computer has a long way to go replacing all media devices (I mean a long way), and the media device will never be accepted as a PC.

Its funny MS wants to call their PC's home entertainment centers (MEDIA CENTER PC's) and sony wants to call there gameing media machine a PC.......errrr what the hell is going wrong with the world. Pretty soon were gonna see companys putting pigs in planes and or trying to sell Lucifer on a new Icey motife

So if Sony can`t make up with the blue-ray they can always compete with the pc by browsing the web with the consol :D. I think Sony start losing the point more and more with what actually is a game console  no offence but..

What a stupid thing to say, you don't need a computer. Well if we don't need one then I would need a torrent client for the PS3, a WinRAR type program, Nero, Photoshop, some sort of Word Proceesing client, a good web browser (preferably Firefox) MSN messenger, emulators, 3D designing program, DL DVD Re-Writer etc. Like Sony would let you use anything that they don't make money off, hopefully somebody can get Linux to run on it that would be very good.

this is almost as funny as the statement he made last year

"The PlayStation is not a game machine," says Kutaragi. "We have not once referred to the PlayStation as a game machine."

he's starting to sound like grandpa simpson. "My Homer is not a communist. He may be a liar, a pig, an idiot, a communist, but he is not a porn star."

Very true whookie, half the fun of a PC is upgrading it, at least for me it is.(im guessing ur the same)

OMFG he actually said they never called the Playstation a game machine. Sorry they said it was that when they named it. They cant try and say they meant play as in play media, we all know 100 percent they meant play as in playing games. did anyone use there psx to play cds more than twice. I used my ps2 to watch a total of I beleive 3 movies when for some reason I couldnt use the dvd player or my standalone was broke. ( I may be remebering wrong but I think gamestation and powerstation were both possible names for the Playstation as they felt playstaion gave to much of a kiddy fill.

you can plug any device you want (printer, burner) into the usb port. linux already supports just about everything out there. software support is also very strong on linux. sony will plug the few holes out there. actually the only application i can't find is something like convertXtoDVD. i love my Suse Linux PC. bittorrent?: Azureus. office?: OpenOffice. Taxes, Banking?: Firefox.

you obviously have never used linux. earth to people!: consoles are PCs without card slots. you upgrade via USB.

the ONLY weakness my be memory upgrades (but sony could make that an option if they wanted to).

Video game for long had been computers, but the point is you simply can t use it as PC, for desktops aplications.. Ok, like the PSP and PS2 you will have some "extra' features avaliable, connect a keyboard, a webcam, etc but thye wont never replace a good "frankestein", common to the 90% of the Computer users world. Think about 1.5 year when the "PC processing Power" of the PS3. Specially on the gaming area, where microsoft domains.
But I think for the little and non-important routines, like write mails, browse a page, chat & check some cracks :) is fine adn enough. But that DOESN'T feed none!! With Linux you will need a strong home brew scene support, to compile new drivers, special formats, and so on. Dont forget storage space, 20 or 60 Gb is nothing, and to make upgrades you will need not a common "HD" but a special "SONY" firmare to use it., also if you are thinking to have your RAW collection of, lets say, Divx on HDTV format, but then whats the use of the BR? Maybe to RIP them off to compressed and more accessible formats :D . Sony always speaks about anti-piracy, but what they want is to sell the machines, is from where they take the profits. How many games are under the "Sony" trademark, by the way?

...and thus begins the first step towards enforcing DRM - get everyone to buy the same 'computer' thats heavily guarded with DRM protection.

assume that there ps3 is as powerful as they say, then how would it benefit as a pc using everything as usb? sata and ide run circles around usb speeds not to mention keep everything in one neat.... well not so neat, tower. sony will never offer a memory upgrade because that would mean they would let consumers go into there system without voiding the warranty.

dude if u think sony is gonna have a full linux OS running on there machine ur very mistaken. the only way it would happen is through homebrew, sony uses linux because its open source, they build there own OS, and its based on the linux structure. There was a linux for PS2, an official linux, they said the same crap. It isnt going to happen dude. I use linux I know about openoffice, I use firefox and I know linux works with most not all of my hardware. I have some proffesional audio sound developement cards that dont have linux drivers readily availible (there are ways to trick certain aspects of linux to work with them, but I cant get there full capabilitys through linux)

I even see a possility of sony making a ps3 printer or photo printer, but thats all it will be for (photos) nobody is ever going to write a report, use a spread sheet, or do there taxes, or burn anything with a PS3. It may be possible with homebrew someday, but it would just be for kicks.

will they make a new type of yourouze dev kit based on linux, that would be cool, but still wont replace the PC, and again they said all these same things for ps2, sony said we would be doing our banking on ps2 (the only banking thats gonna be done on the ps3 is breaking it). they just say wierd stuff sometimes.

plus My main PC uses are Music Creation (thats actually where my skill is) I mean actual music creation, not just mixing loops in acid or fruity loops. then for gaming, then for hacking my gameing consoles, then to come hear when im extremley bored and want to rant with some ppl.

I dont think PS3 will do any of that. actually, I know it wont.

and there is no way ur ever going to use a torrent (I prefer NGS) with the support of sony. lol and I thought I was a dreamer. Im a linux fanboy too, but sony is just using it cause its free code for them.

good point about sata.

perhaps they have something in mind for the 3 gigabit ethernet ports

what 3 ports? there is only 1. and what exactley do u mean? what do u think they are planning?

Im pretty sure the only thing going in that port is an ethernet cable attached to a pc, router, or modem

they would have to use firewire to come close to what your trying to insinuate

Sony loves the smell of their own crap. Seriously, their ego is way too big to fit into a small box like the PS3. So far, I'm lucky to even own one, it's an amazing deal at $600, everyone will buy a PS3 and then spend another $200 to get a Wii with it (because they feel people would rather do that then get a 360 and Wii for the price of their 1 console), they can release the console at ANY price without ANY games and everyone will still buy one, now the system is so amazing that people will toss their PC's out the window just because there will be no need for them anymore. I heard that I can also throw my BBQ grill because it's going to include a George Forman Grill...at least it looks like it should.

What do they think, everyone is just a lemming and doesn't actually care about what they're buying, as long as it says PS3 on it?

We do not need the PC Who is this "we". I would like to meet them, they sound like they will be a laugh.

Anyone with any sense knows it can not replace a PC, so surely a top exec of an electronics firm knows that.

This is probably the reason Sony dont respond to many comments, they only make things worse. Maybe they need the idiots guide to handling the media.
