According to analysts, Sony are actually paying more for the PS3 than you will be come November. Merrill Lynch analysts have calculated that the Cell prcoessor in the PS3 alone costs $230 to make and the blu-ray drive costs $350. These two components alone, put the cost to make the PS3 above $500 and on the brink of the 60GB version at $599. Add in the other components for the PS3 such as the RAM, GPU and so on at a cost of $175 and you're looking at Sony paying another $175. So Sony pay $755, and you pay $599 for a 60GB version PS3 - that's a saving of over $150 dollars! Perhaps this breakdown of costs shows exactly why Sony say you're getting great value for the money.

You may think that paying $499 and $599 for a PlayStation 3 is a lot of dough, but Sony is paying even more according to Merrill Lynch. Analysts at the company have pieced together what they think are the costs Sony pays for each PS3. They believe that each Cell microprocessor (the brains of the PS3) costs $230 to make. Blu-ray optical drives, another PS3 feature Sony is touting, cost $350. Just those two components alone already cost more than the entry-level version of the PS3. After factoring in the hard drive, RAM, and other hardware and manufacturing costs, Merrill Lynch estimates that Sony has to dish out more than $715 for each PS3 that rolls off the assembly line.

This isnt news.....
The PS2 was sold at a loss, the Xbox was sold at a loss. The new Xbox 360 is sold at a huge loss. Console makers dont make money on the hardware, they make money on software, software licenses, and peripherals. It will be a year, probably more, before MS and Sony actually profit from console sales.

Besides already knowing that consoles are sold at a loss, this particuar "analysis" of the PS3 has already been circulating for months.

We could all give turds a coat of paint and sell it for $1. I would be losing money as well, since I would have to pay for the initial "parts" (food), then the processing time, manufacturing costs (gotta cook up them turds!), and packaging (compact brown logs).

The Moral?

No matter how hard you try, you just can't polish a turd.
