View Full Version : UK Retailers: PS3 Price Doesn't Matter For Six Months

UK Retailers seem in fairly buoyant mood following the announcement that the PS3 will hit the UK market for a price of £425. One retailer says the price doesn't matter, it will be a mega sell out regardless - while another retailer makes a bold statement that the PS3 could be priced at twice as much and Sony will still sell out twice-over. Somehow I think these guys are getting a little over-excited at some healthy mark-ups on the PS3 - they just want more!

Given the machine is likely to be a sell-out this side of Christmas, I think the price point is irrelevant for the first six months," specialist retail chain CeX' marketing manager Jonathan Cronin told GamesIndustry.biz. "The launch frenzy will be there - this is the new PlayStation, not the new Xbox. Four million units globally before Christmas? I don't think you'll be able to buy one off the shelf."

"We welcomed Sony's PS3 announcement at the E3 convention, putting an end to the speculation surrounding a UK launch date," offered Gamestation group product manager Anna Downing. "The November 17th date sets up an extremely competitive and exciting Q4, with consumers potentially having the choice of three 'next-gen' consoles on the market. We're anticipating that demand will outstrip supply."

Steve O'Brien, boss of leading independent retailer Action Replay, agrees. "With the amount of product coming into the UK I think Sony could have quite comfortably priced it at twice the price and still sell-out twice over," he suggested. "In the first round of any console sales it's the fanboys and hardcore gamers who buy it. I think the strength of the brand is key."

With hardware shortages a certainty during the launch window and no confirmation on UK-specific number, however, most retailers are expected to refrain publicly from criticising Sony's pricing strategy for fear of risking their allocation.

But regardless of this, not everyone was so charitable. "Such high prices are a difficult thing to push at retail level especially with the continued problems of distribution, release dates, and product availability that have dogged UK product releases for some time," insisted Steve Aspinall, owner of indie V-Ten Entertainment. "And that's without the mass-discount culture convincing the consumer to wait a few months, and the uncanny shortage of convincing software for the platform, not to mention the continued implication that next gen gaming cannot take place without a next-gen television set."

Many, including Sony itself, certainly agree that the firm faces a serious challenge in convincing consumers to buy into Blu-Ray - fingered as one of the main causes of PS3's hefty price tag - as it enters a format war with Toshiba's rival HD-DVD technology. Particularly if they are to swallow SCE UK boss Ray Maguire's assertion that PS3 is a "bargain".

"If you've got a PS3 next to a 360 you need to be able to see the difference if you're going to be asked to pay more. Microsoft must be pleased there's a nice price differential there," commented CeX' Cronin.

"People will say PS3 is expensive because they haven't got a clue what's in it - they just see it as another box to play games on," argued leading videogames industry analyst Nick Parker of Parker Consulting.

oOHh at last some peole saying the truth, the one that Microsoft and Nintendo don't wanna hear.

The PS3 will sell-out the 2,000,000 units in one day.
The 600€ prize in euope isn't a problem, maybe it could was been a problem if Sony have said the prize the day before its release, but we have 6 months for no to go to a pub and pay 6€ for a ron+coca cola.

Looks like no one in the world have brothers... you know... two brother = half a prize.

I'm gonna pay 900€ the release day, including cables, another wireless pad, 2 games (one of them a 2 players one), the USB cable (for the wireless pad), an Ethernet cable, and surely the Kingdom Hearts 2 (on his release on Europe). 'come one its the Christmas pay day.
Well i mean 450€ :D i have a 4 years big brother.

I was considering getting one, when there was going to be 2 HDMI ports, and more ethernet ports etc etc, basically, the PS3 that was announced at E3 2005, however, the E3 2006 version is well not worth the price. I was looking forward to having 2 HDTVs next to each other playing dual screen PS3... oh well...

oblivion, splintercell, ninety nine nights, mass effect, warhammer, phantasy star univers, blue dragon, ghost recon, rainbow six and gears of war could be considered stealth. But maybe these are not your types of games :D

yep this is true. People over here in UK paid £399 for the PS2 when it came out (from mail-order catalogues), which I know is kinda stupid cos they could have saved £100 if they went to their local game store. But clearly this shows that people will be willing to pay £25 more for a much more powerful system

i agree with u that it will sell but it does not really make sense. Back when they bought the ps2 it had the wow factor that the ps3 has now. Even more i would say.

For the first 4-6 months it won't matter. As I said in another thread, demand was high for the PS2 at launch, even though there were really no worthwhile games for the PS2 for a year.

But what about during the fall/winter of 2007 though? Those who buy the PS3 in, say, August of 2007 for $599, only to see the price drop to $399 less than two months later, might feel a bit pissed at the extra $200 they paid. Outside of when a console manufacture is pulling the plug or getting desperate, price drops aren't so steep nor so frequent. So the PS3 price will likely drop by only $100, give or take a few $10s. Assuming they're actually making money on the Blu-ray market by this point, they might do smaller price drops ($50-$70) around May '07 and November '07 instead.

Microsoft will be in a position to drop the price of the XBox 360 in the last quarter of this year, and will likely do so in the last quarter of 2007 as well, so the difference in price will be well over $200 in favor of Microsoft's console. Some might be wondering "why would Microsoft drop their prices?" They'll be competing against the $200-$250 Wii, and they'll be wanting their platform to look that much better than Sony's.

So at the end of 2006, it'll probably be $199-$249 for the Nintendo Wii, $329-$349 for a Premium XBox 360 package, and $599 for a Premium PS3 package. A year later, it may become $179-$199 for the Wii, ~$299 for the 360 Premium package, and $479-$539 for the PS3. And the launch hype which hits in the first few months of most console launches will be long gone. Without some major gaming exclusives or a strong blu-ray market, the price drops may be more painful and infrequent with Sony.
