View Full Version : Sony's Grave Error: The $499 HDMI-Lacking PS3
IGN are running an article which advises gamers to stay clear of the lower-end PS3 model as according to them, no HDMI, no HDCP which equates to no 1080p means disaster for the console.
Until Sony announces a $499 PS3 design change, we at IGN Gear can, in good faith, only recommend that interested buyers steer clear of the lower-priced PS3 model or make the purchase fully aware that they may in future suffer severe repercussions when it comes to Blu-ray movie playback. 540p, the resolution that the Image Constraint Token will down-convert 1080p movies to in non-HDCP systems, is by no stretch of the imagination Hi-Def, and will, without major changes in PS3 design or studio policy, be the future of Blu-ray playback on the $499 PS3. Sony must either make this truth clear to buyers or make a hardware alteration. Any other response should be counted as negligent and anti-consumer, grave mistakes for a company that is risking so much on the PS3 and Blu-ray's success.

i've been saying this since the announcement of the hdmi'less version now it justifies my arguement. So how are people going to feel about paying 500 for a blu-ray formatted system without the video playback feature

IGN are making totally claims without true evidence, they are using words like may not support HDCP, and content restrictions may be applied to the media, thats all conjecture, these guys are not journalist, im not IGN bashing, i am long time supporter of them, and insider subsciber, but I have been noticing lately most of thier reporting is starting to sound like movie critcs these days, based on their tastes and their thoughts, true journalism is not based on that, so they should stop REPORTING and making claims they cant back up, or I will start calling them IGN Inquirer.....SONY has everything at stake with the PS3, especially on the Blu Ray part of it, so do you really think they are going to take that big of a risk just to get these blu ray players into households, they know if they took that risks, they are done, simply stated...

We all know that will be only a real PS3 in the markt, the 600$ one.
Who cares about 100$ more if it inlcudes 40Gb more HDD, Wi-Fi build in... and the HDMI.
If you're gonna buy the PS3, i don't think that you're gonna buy the 100$ less one.

hdcp will be a standard like css once its in effect and regardless of any statement anyone else makes it is sony themselves that said the lower end will not support hdmi. if it does not support hdmi then there will be no way of hdcp

So i have a 32" HDTV which has Component IN and DVI (non HDCP), which is used for PC input only! When i buy a PS3 or 360, does mean i have to buy a new HDTV, damn right I do,to watch HDDVD and Blu-Ray, this is where inhertinly the problem lies with high def content, do you think i am the only person with a non HDCP compliant HD box, no way, there are millions of HD boxes and owners in the same situation as me, the industry must come up with a way to make a sysytem that is compliant with the first and second waves of HDTV's that were not compliant to HDCP standard, and only have compentent IN technology, i spent 1400 bucks on my HD box, and I am not going out this december and buying a new 30 - 40 inch Box again!!!! This is why they must abandon the copyprotection technology.

unfortunately you will have to buy a new tv, this is why there delaying the use of hdcp for a year or two, to give people a chance to decide on what there going to do. These are standards that have already been set and put into tv's and hd-dvd players and even video cards. Unfortunately if you don't get a hdmi/dvi hdcp tv you are screwed on displaying video in anything other then 480p, these are the facts and have been stated in many articles.

There's been speculation that the HD-DVD component which Microsoft is releasing for the 360 will somehow include an HDMI connection. (My own knowledge on the HDTV mess of details isn't enough to say whether this is possible or not, though.)
In Sony's defense, perhaps there's the possibility of a similar component being developed for the cheaper PS3 as a dongle, to allow for this. Sony would be able to run however many checks they want on whatever PS3 is connected to it, to verify that pirating couldn't be easily done.
Is any of this possible?

Yeah some intersting points, but IGN should really wait for these details to be confirmed before making any recommendations to consumers.
Im sure Sony will make it clear in their advertising what each package consists off, I cant imagine they want to be accused of misleading consumers, especially after all the negative press they have been getting.
And i know 99% of us maxconsole forum members know at least a little about HDMI & HDCP the average consumer will not. These abbrevations will mean nothing to them, so they wont even care! Maybe the guys at Sony know this, clued up gamers will get the premium package ones who have no idea what the difference is will get the basic. Just a thought.........
