View Full Version : Immersion On PS3's Lack of Vibration
Gamasutra spoke to Immersion's Victor Viegas, the company that sued Sony for $90 million dollars in respect of Sony making illegal use of their technologies in the PS2 controller. He says that Sony's reasoning for not including vibration function in the PS3 controller is nonsense, and it could easily by fixed by his team.
The company announced in a press release that the PS3 controller would lack vibration due to the possibility of it interfering with the controller’s new tilt sensors, which Viegas feels is unlikely.
“If what they’re saying is in fact the reason why [the controller will not have vibration], I’ve offered them numerous solutions to the problem,” Viegas said in an interview Tuesday. “I don’t believe it’s a very difficult problem to solve, and Immersion has experts that would be happy to solve that problem for them.”
The solutions offered by Immersion, however, would hinge upon Sony’s acceptance of the current litigation, and no word has been given as to Sony’s plans on the matter. Viegas says that Immersion “would have no qualms helping Sony with their problem, if indeed it is a problem,” but the company would have to cease its appeal against the current injunction.
Viegas also said that the responses he’s found on websites and in blogs seem to imply that gamers agree Sony has taken “a step backward” in its development of gaming by its removal of vibration technology.
“From what I’ve read, people are not happy,” he said.
Within his own company it seems, people are not happy with Sony’s decision either.
“We had a lot of employees on the floor at E3, and many of them got to get their hands on the [Playstation 3] controller,” Viegas said. “They say it felt light, that it felt cheap and flimsy, and that it lacked weight or substance. Overall, they were disappointed.”
Apparently, Immersion employees were not the only ones upset at the lack of haptic response in Sony’s new console.

I gotta laugh at this..
-fanboy sues sony because of vibrate feature.
-sony removes vibrate feature, because of legal action - as any sensible company would do to avoid future lawsuits.
-fanboy who sued sony cries because he wants vibrate feature in new console.
end result?
fanboy drops lawsuit - sony don't pay millions of dollars out, and continues use of vibrating controller.
It could be possible that the vibrate feature would ruin the gyros though, as shaking would mess up any control you have.. I think for the most part you absorb the brunt of the shaking - not the controller. This is why I think they should go back even farther and steal N64's design of the 'rumble pak' and 'motion pak' that you slap into the controller depending on which game you play.
The lack of rumble is what 3rd party developers are for. There will be vibrating controllers with sensors and light up buttons with wings and a beer holder available for this console - Just don't expect sony to do it.

Stupid stupid Immersion. Sony don't care if the there is vibration feature in the ps3 controller. Why would They help Sony with the problem? Even though they were sueing them for $90 millon for the the ps2 stuff. Sony don't need help from another company. I don't care if there is virbrator or turbo on the controller. I just want the ps3 controller to be a good design so no one could sue them from anything for the design. Like the new feature they add for the ps3 controller, alot of people love it. The company Immersion need to get the fact straight, that the ps3 controller is very natural to the ps2 design but no virbation. People still love the controller. I just wish Sony soon could make a slicker design in controller. I don;t want a heavy controller on my hand, just a lite one with something to make it work so I be able to play ps3 games fair.Forget Immersion.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

unfortunately there not having rumble right now. Sony made a statement back when this was all going down that was something along the lines of "if we paid off the settlement then thats money in our competitors pockets because microsoft now has stock in the company". My memory is sketchy on this but i am pretty sure, not positive, it was somewhere on that median. Sony could of developed a new technology that was rumble like, maybe a pulsating action which would be pretty hot for fps and other gun oriented games. (thas my idea sony don't go stealing that too, lol) November is coming up soon and they just announced production was going to start in june so i highly doubt any modifications will be made this late in the game. anything after that will have to be after launch or purchased seperately

god dam it, i could make a rumble pad my self, its simple.
like a pad button when its pressed it sends a signal the the console and tell the game it been pressed.
so you add your rumble motors and make it opsite, when you shoot or something the game sends a signal to the pad (like a button) and makes it rumble.
i know this because ive had to make a n64 code (emu) to disable the rumble as im using a xbox pad and it found the code by finding the button values and then the rumble, because my xbox pad rumbles all the time and wont turn off.
i think sony are doing a money scamm, but to be honest rumble isnt that important as i have my 360 rumble turned off (saves battery power)

Expect Datel and Pelican to help out in creating some options.

Its posts like this that make me wonder just how stupid the posters here really are. First what in the hell makes you even think for one second that the lawsuit was done by a "fanboy"? Its a CORPORATE lawsuit its not an individual. Microsoft was also sued by this same company because they also violated the same patents in the design of the xbox. Microsoft choose to pay the license fee and then later went on to purchase part of the company. Sony has two choices fight the lawsuit or pay the company and it looks like they are going to fight the lawsuit and drop the continued use of the technology.
Next we get to "ruin the gyros". This makes no sense either there is no gyroscope used in the PS3 controller its a solid state IC. Immersion is correct the rumble can be corrected for.
Last we get to the third party developers. You can't add a vibrating controller if the console or games do not support it. In this case its really only game support that is important and I doubt your going to see this either companies are not going to spend the time adding support for a feature that requires a 3rd party controller. Plus the patents also cover the software side of it and Immersion can sue the game developers if they include the rumble feature. The current lawsuit does call for several games to be removed from store shelves. If Sony wins the lawsuit or decides to give up and license the tech they can still add the feature later but who knows how many years this is going to take by the time its over it might not matter anymore.

Lol. He sounds like an asshole. The vibration function came around in the PS1, why did he wait until the PS2 to sue Sony?

God, I can't believe this. Who do they think they are those Immersion dude? Nobody ever heard of them before the lawsuit, and nobody will hear about them in 4 year either. This is only a sorry attempt at looking like the good guys. We should go spam their customer service or something.

really thinking of it, sounds like this company have planned this, they make something for microsoft and sony and how can they miss use it, its a rumble.
if someone says to me ill make this for you and i use it i assume they want me to use it and not sue me later on, how long has sony used dual shock, they even had it on the psx and they are sueing now???
