The Gamerscoreblog (written by employees of Microsoft Games Global Marketing team), have commented upon the recent Xbox 360 firmware hack. They didn't issue a new response, just quoted what they said the first time information was released on such a hack - they say they take attacks on the system very seriously, both to protect the security of the console as well as to prevent piracy.

A few folks are asking about the Microsoft response to Optical Disc Drive (ODD) hack. We sent out some messaging when the news first appeared, but since more information about the hack has been released publicly, we're revisiting. The bottom line hasn’t changed: we take attacks on the system seriously, both to protect the security of the system, and to prevent piracy.

Here is the official messaging:

The core security system has not been broken. However, on some Xbox 360 consoles the authentication protocol between the optical disc drive and the console may be attacked via a complex software and hardware modification which could allow people to play illegally copied and modified games. We continue to invest in the security of the platform and will respond appropriately as unauthorized activity is identified.

When a person purchases a genuine Microsoft Xbox360 console and genuine Xbox 360 games, they receive the real product which is complete and suited for the use intended. They know its source and can expect the console and games to function properly and provide a satisfying gaming experience. Genuine and unmodified Microsoft Xbox products provide gamers with the reliability, security, support and dynamic gaming experience that they expect, and genuine and unmodified Microsoft Xbox 360 products are eligible for technical support. If there are any questions regarding the use and enjoyment of the Xbox 360 console, the Xbox Live service, or Xbox 360 games, gamers can be assured that Microsoft will stand by its product and provide the necessary support. Modified consoles will not be eligible for technical support and the user’s warranty will be voided.

Lastly, the protection of intellectual property rights is a high priority for Microsoft and our partners, one that significantly and positively impacts economic growth, technological innovation, and most importantly, the confidence of customers who count on the integrity and quality of their products.

Nice scare tactic captain obviou.. err, microsoft.

So to sum it up they basically said they can't do anything about what was done to the console, or didn't say what could be done other than if you fry it you are out another $400 to replace it as no support or warrantry will remain on the unit.. They seemed to want to persue the IP crackers rather than the users.

By the looks and reports of it there is little they can do for all live games currently released as no new data can be added for checks to ensure the discs are not copies. I have a feeling they may try to copy what sony did with some football game recently and toy with our heads.

I sure hope that C4E does not want to enter into the USA any time in the near future...

im not out $400 if i did kill my system because i know ppl will still pay hundreds for it on ebay and id only need to buy a core system because id have a HDD and wireless controller already. ive seen broken 360's go for over $250, whoopie do i end up having to spend $50 for a new system or less.

amyway i really doubt id mess up my system in the 6 months thats left on the warrenty.

they must be having a laugh with consoles over heating, xbox live updates breaking ppl's 360's and some others having upto 4 360 replacements.
