View Full Version : Third Parties Will Fail to Capitalize on Wii
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has commented that third parties apart from Sega or Ubisoft are in a position to take advantages of an early Wii success.
"I can't name any US publisher games that are going to launch on the Wii that are going to make a difference," Pachter said. "Certainly there will be Spongebob, but big deal. Seriously, that's great, but if you buy the Wii as your second console, as I really think most people are going to do, you're probably not going to give a damn about Spongebob."
However, Pacther did acknowledge that Sega and Ubisoft are two of the few third parties that could benefit from robust Wii launch sales. Sega is aiming to release Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz at the Wii's launch, and Ubisoft has been heavily pushing the gun-and-sword first-person action title Red Steel, even demonstrating it at Nintendo's press conference last week.
He continued, reiterating that very few third parties have announced real system-mover titles. "If the Wii sells -- I'm just being ridiculous here -- 10 million units in the first year, who benefits? Well, clearly Nintendo, and clearly Ubisoft will capture that higher-end mature audience, and clearly Sega will be there and do well, but can I say [THQ] would sell 5 million copies of Spongebob? No way."
"I didn't think publishers [knew how cool the Wii was] until they got their hands on it. I don't know how Ubisoft figured it out. Let's give them a lot of credit. Their ahead of everybody right now."

When you take into consideration the amount of man hours going into a so called nextgen game, the hi res textures, hir res models and then theres the actual game to worry about, if every game is not a 'hit' then what will companies do? all that effort and it wouldn't even get them the return for the effort they put in but I suppose thats what hype does for you in the end.
As far as I know, all the games coming out for the Xbox360 and the Ps3 are not using all the cores available of their cpus and are relying on the ati/nvidia shaders in the video hardware to output those cool 'nextgen' effects, so it will take some time before developers are fully able to exploit the hardware.Whether it will be worth the effort is another question.
Developing games is a business at the end of the day and if companies feel they didn't get the returns I have no doubt they will develop for the console they feel will get them those returns.
I hope third parties do support the Wii with as many titles as they can, because unlike the other consoles there aren't any hard and fast rules to release games for the Wii. Just make them fun I suppose.

We also have
SquareEnix with Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy
Capcom with Resident Evil
EA Sports with Madden
Activision with Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Tony Hawk and Call of Duty
Ubisoft with Red Steal but also Rayman (we can't forget him)
Tecmo with Super Swing Golf
Atlus with Trauma Center
I'm sure there are other 3rd party companies, but thats what came to mind. Square has two announced games, Activision with 3, Ubi and Sega with a couple. Everyone else with just one (That I can find easily). The title says, "Third Parties Will Fail to Capitalize on Wii" so I wonder why the Wii has more support than they did for the GC and more 3rd party announced games than the PS3.

I think this statement is completley off base. What Nintendo system has ever had a strong launch line up....none. (especially third party) SNES only had Mario World, F-Zero, and that football game and maybe a few others. I think the 3rd parties still did ok with snes. n64 had I Think only pilotwings and mario64 for a while. Gamecube had the strongest nintendo launch lineup ever but still nothing compared to there compitition. 3rd partys will develope for it, especially if its a hit. will they miss this fiscal year...yeah... but nintendo has always done it that way.

Well its OBVIOUS....
The gamecube had SOME support for exclusives but most of them were first party, the rest were released on all the consoles and were mostly better with more content on the other consoles as well....
With the Wii, where nintendo needed to get MORE into the mainstream they have sidelined themselves more into a niche with the weird (ok different) controller and the different console.
Sure development on it is cheap, but cheap is not always good. and there will be an influx of barely good games like cooking, and swimming and golf and whatever capitalises on the controllers capabilities untill the library is inundated with samey games. The way its happening to the ds already.
On top of which how many developers would be able to scale down the next gen big name titles which will be considered to be FOCUSSED on the ps3 and the 360. The wii will just get sidetracked spinoff titles to every tiger woods, tony hawk game out there. and thats it.
oh and the library of 20 years blah blah? is ALREADY playable to DEATH on emulators on other consoles and handhelds like the psp. Besides who wants to play 20 year old games? someone who actually missed the RE-RE-RE release of zelda and mario and other classic games on the gameboy color and advance and emulators and psp and xbox?
YEAH RIGHT.

MadonnaProject, I understand you points... but your wrong. Maybe they have quote, "sidelined themselves more into a niche" but look at the hype they are getting. Since E3 this console is going to be huge no matter what. There is just too many people, too impressed right now.
I play emulators all the time. And I can't wait for perfect emulation on the Wii! =)

Well, dont think because time passed for you, none is growing up of there ..every year there are new 10 yealrs old ,12 years old, etc.. people that never put their hands on some games, how many are still going to play Zelda? Who will knows, RE series? gand Turismo? Paper Mario? Sonic? Princess peach ? Metroid? the last game doesnt mean is the "Best" , and every month many potential players are entering the arena, for them a "bonus" like old titles, good ones..like Super mario world, Ocarina of time, Tales of Phantasya, Super mario RPG, Super Mario 64, is always welcome..
also for myself.;)
