View Full Version : Nintendo Wii Controller Triumphs Over PS3 Controller
Engadget have conducted a controller showdown between the Wii and PS3 controller, in terms of the controllers performance in relation to new functions, they award the 'winner' tag to the Nintendo Wii's controller.
<center><img src="http://www.maxconsole.net/content_img/wiicvsps3c.jpg"></center></a>
We realize both controllers are still technically beta hardware, but if we had to choose based on the what we played with at the show, out the door we're gonna have to vouch for the Wii controller first and foremost. Both worked (in the basic-most sense of the word), and both provided a new level of immersion to gaming. But even assuming both functioned equally well, Nintendo's controller's shape and design proved to be more versatile in lending itself to a wide variety of uses and scenarios in movement-based gaming than did Sony's. The simple fact of the matter is Nintendo designed their controller from the ground up with the intention to play with movement, while Sony merely tacked the ability onto their own already-classic design. Now, if you want to talk about a scenario where you've got a severe button masher of a fighting game that needs a thorough going over on both platforms, you're going to have a completely different answer; but as long as we're talking about these controllers' performance with their newfound functions, we have to tip our hats to Nintendo.

what:confused:
this is bollocks, that Wii controller is turd, it simply proves that nintendo will be mainly games where you have to wave your arms like a prat.
its pointless, like the ds using a pen to move, ive tried playing mario and games like that and im for ever having to stop and move my pen back to the bottom.
so say your playing a fps (red steel) and youve moved your arm to a part of the game and want to carry on going that way and the flaw is you can only move your arm so far left as we aint stretch armstrong, so you have to move your arm back again to carry on, so whats going to happen.
kinda like a mouse cursor, if you move it left as far as you can, then drag it back, so does your cursor, only way arround that is to pick your mouse up, but you cant exactly do that with this.
i think the ps2 or ps3 so i should say is better than the revolution, theyve kept it the same design so all ps2 fans can easily pick it up and play.

The question is, "Do people with Satananic Avatars know what they are talking about?"
I'm really not understanding you Retroboy. You're talking like Nintendo hasn't thought things through. Like they don't know what they are doing. I guarantee you that they do. You said:so say your playing a fps (red steel) and youve moved your arm to a part of the game and want to carry on going that way and the flaw is you can only move your arm so far left as we aint stretch armstrong, so you have to move your arm back again to carry on, so whats going to happen. And all I can say, to that, is maybe you should understand how these games are working before you judge the controller. You obviously made up your mind because your either a Sony fanboy or you can't stand Nintendo; but that happens to people who use evil avatars.
And for those of you who want the classic style of control don't forget that the Wii supports the GC controller and the new classic controller that looks amazing. =)
PS. After E3 I have become a Nintendo fanboy, I am proud. =)

I understand what retroboy is saying, in terms of where your hands are in relation to the screen and what your character is doing, eventually you will reach a physical limit and so far we don't know how that will translate in game, since I haven't personally played with it yet. Then again, neither has retroboy, so I'm not sure where he's making these claims from.
Also if this problem plagues the Wii controller, what is stopping it from hindering the PS3 controller?
I'm no genius, but I think people who make these electronic devices actually TEST them out first, so as to remove these little 'kinks' before the final product (unless your M$ of course :D )

that Wii controller is turd
Nice way of putting it. But i'd have to agree in the long run. Its just impractical for everyday gaming really. Will be good to mess around with your friends.
I think people who are reviewing it are excited by its newness and innovation. I think if they had a wii and the new controller for a while they will be tired of it.
But its just not practical im sure if anyone buys a wii they will buy the classic controllers and use those for the majority of the time.
And why dont they also comppare the XBOX 360s controller. Why is everyone so ready to bad mouth the PS3. I dont think anyone would bet against the PS3 selling well, inspite of all these so called "problems" and "lack of innovation".
Nearly everyone i know wants a PS3, hardly anyone of them have heard of the wii and dont like the 360. Its only hardcore gamers that know about the problems PS3 are having to get a console out on time, average gamers dont know and dont care about this stuff. Sony are really going to have to screw something up not to win this console war. Well in the western world anyway.

You Wii haters just can't get it through your heads... The Wii has two controllers and not even every game will use the wiimote:
"We found that trying to implement too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game. We're looking at keeping the control simple, as it has been. The Wii hardware has sockets for the GameCube controller, too. So I'll just say now that you may not want to throw away your GCN controller yet."
This quote is from Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby and Smash Bros.
EDIT: Have any of you used a PC mouse designed like the Wiimote? They can work 2 different ways. You can hold button to move the cursor or you can hold the a button to disable your movement of the cursor. These PC mice are used quite often for PowerPoint presentations. The Wii, when needed on certain games will be the same way.
Check out page 6. Its very simple

Ok then so whats the big fuss about this new remote then????? You have just made it clear that the wii's controller will only work on a few games that are really designed for it. Now lets remember this is the only thing going for the wi.
To quote Masahiro Sakuraki too much motion-sensory functionality can get in the way of the game Hmmmmmm i think that says it all.
Its a gimmick, the wii is nearly all been marketed on its controller, i cant even remeber what the console looks like. Im not a PS3 fanboy whatever that is, i dont hate the wii. I just dont like it:p
PS. Nice to see people using forums the main way they were meant to be used, for debate.

*Will a lot of new gamers buy it for the gimmick? I think so.
*Do I like the gimmick? I do.

I know what youre saying but the Playstation brand name is huge and very well respected, especialy by novice gamers. People have brand loyalty. Im not sure a fancy controller will change their minds in favour for the wii.
I think the only way the wii will make headway over the PS3 is if the PS3 comes out way after their expected release date. Also lets not forget most people are more familliar with the PS3 titles like GTA and GranTurismo and they cant wait to play on the next generation versions. Even if they are nearly identical to the previous version!!

A lot of people are switching to Wii. I've actually been very surprised. I switched. I will never pay $600 for a console. I guess I might if my household income tripled. There are a lot of people who will forget about Gran Turismo. Most games are multi-console, like GTA.
The only reason I've been loyal to Sony is because they get most of the RPG's. I'm not paying $600 for RPG's. I just hope Nintendo will continue to get some good ones. And so far... they have just as many if not more announced than PS3 or 360.
By the way... People aren't familiar with Mario, Zelda, and Metriod?
One last thing. The Nintendo DS's touch screen was a gimmick. I thought the DS was a joke. Then my wife played one. She's not a gamer and she wouldn't let it down. Then came some games on the system that I liked. I now own two, one for me and one for her. I play my games, she plays hers, and we play games Wi-Fi together. I can see the Wii being the same way. She doesn't play my Xbox or PS2. She plays DS and she really wants a Wii.

I dont think these titles are really associated with the next generation of consoles are they? They remind me of the megadrive, gameboy days, very outdated.
I like the DS for playing on those kind of games but i dont want my main console to be for playing those kinds of games.

I want fun and I want clean grafx; Nintendo has always done that. Nintendo did lose a lot of their support to the PS2. But they've gained a lot back with the DS. If Nintendo does things right, then they will be right back into things. When was the last time you were arguing about the Gamecube? People are talking and talking a lot about the Wii; most of which is positive talk. That's a good sign for Nintendo.

Thats done it I've been provoked enough and now I'm posting!;)
I think the key problem the ps3 has is that its too expensive, (even the 'retard' packs). Once the console has launched sony MAY surprise us with a cheaper price or at least some offer to make the price seem affordable. I do think that the games that they showed in E3 were run of the mill, typical button bashers or more FPSs using the tired old anlogue sticks. Good job you can plug in a mouse/keyboard to the ps3 then.
Sony need to do something very serious if they want to come even second place with their ps3, becuase they have a lot of catch up to do as microsoft are way ahead. MGS4 can only take them so far, and If the 360 continues to do well then maybe even that will end up on the 360, then sony will have no more cards left to play. gta, final fantasy, used to be sony exclusives, now they are almost multiformat - bad news for sony.
When the ps2 launched the only competition was the dreamcast, which was already on the way out, and it had a good headstart over the xbox. Now with the ps3, sony has lost its headstart, its got less exclusive games and its costs a lot more. Overall things are different and I'd like to see how sony handles this one with the 360 getting some triple A titles.
For me nintendo Wii is the only console i'm looking for as it offers something different, primarily the way you interact and play games (and i'm not talking about the way that idiot was playing warhawk.) nintendo believe in themselves so much so that they are willing to risk their entire business, to me that signals commitment and dedication, unlike the 'Hello, I have invented a new way for you to buy blu ray/umd players, Oh btw it also plays games' mentality of sony that does not impress me one bit.
The ps3 controller went from bad to worse then got scrapped and finally they settled on worse-. The fact that they simply couldn't state the real reason for removing the rumble motors in the controller - giving the escuse that it interfered with the tilt sensors is example enough of how low they have become.
Lets hope that the ps3 doesn't turn out to be another psp, becuase its not just nintendo that sony has to worry about this time.
btw, I hope nintendo keep that War of the Worlds 'tripod call' as their boot up sound.

. People have brand loyalty.
If thats true then Sega would be still making Consoles. (Don't forget Atari, Intellivision, Coleco Vision, Amiga, etc.) Brand Loyalty can only go so far. People switch brands for many reasons ... like a $600 price tag ... better line up of games ... diet soda changed its artificial sweetener ... anything.
I personally can't justify paying $600 to play games on a console. I want my system to be what its ment to be a game system ... not a be all that you can be box ... and to me thats what Nintendo is doing ... their system will play games. NOT surf the net ... NOT play Blu-Ray/HD-DVD movies ... BUT to play games.
By removing all the things a GAMING console should NOT be Nintendo kept their price WAY down, this is assuming that the rumors of the $200 - $250 price tag are true, and they usually are. I can't wait for the Wii ... looks fun.

Im not a Wii hater nor a nintendo hater, ive had every nintendo console upto now, and yup my hand is up on the GC Q.
My reasons are why i hate nintendo is
both the controllers look ugly and the remote pad (look at it) the buttons are too far away for someone to press (to play a game) how do you think your ment to press the buttons that far apart.
the game pad is a snes remake with two analogues and is worse than the ps2 pad so ive no idea how they say this pad is better when the ps2/ps3 pad fits perfect into your hands, this Wii pad looks like your in for some wankin cramp:p
the Wii is going to be what when its released $199.99 yes sounds cheap and should be cheaper considering your buying a console with the same power as the xbox which i dont know how much in $ but we get them now new for £89.99 with 2 games.
event the name isnt catchy, Nintendo Wii, i prefared Revolution.
these are my reasons (not based on myth, actually true) why i have no time for nintendo's Wii.
Also the only thing i didnt like about the GC was too many games aimed toward kids, nothing for the adult market and Wii will be even more kiddie games and that doesnt win my vote, i like multi platform consoles, if you want to play kiddie games you can or if you want adult games (GTA) you can not simply force feeding you the same crap all the time.
and same crap i mean Mario games
Mario Tennis
Mario Golf
Mario Football
Mario Party
Mario Dance Revolution
Mario Kart (which isnt too bad but gets boring)
Im suprised theyre isnt Mario Volley Ball, Mario Table tennis, Mario Babminton, what im getting at nintendo dont make excellent games like they did back with the snes and n64, now they seem to want money for nothing.

I know what youre saying but people arent completely stupid. They wont buy rubbish. But i dont think people will think the PS3 is rubbish and that the wii or 360 are outstanding. The xbox 360 is quite expensive too. I just dont believe that if people thing the PS3 is rubbish that they will think that the wii will be able to take its place, they are much more likely to get a 360.
Im not sure about 360 prices worldwide at the moment. But in the UK the premium pack is around £280-£300 ($530-$570). Are Sony really that far off??????

this is what i cant understand, how can anybody think the Wii can take over the PS3 god its not even in the same pipe line, Wii will be big in japan and to nintendo only fans, but in the real world PS3 and 360 will win because its actually next gen.
the Wii is (and we who can see the light know this) just a Xbox.
I also know that on the launch of the PS3 MS will drop the price of the 360, no matter how they put it, they are doing this because the PS3 is going to be a major competitor with the 360 and MS want to persuade gamers to buy their console over the PS3 because its cheaper.
im not sure how else to put this, but the Wii might have some good games but it can not say its going to be better than the ps3 or the 360. it will only dream of handling the power of PS3 and 360.
Me id rather save my cash and stick with my GC and xbox wich are now both modded.

As far as comfortable controllers go, the Gamecube controller is comfortable and intuitively designed. ANYBODY can pick up a NGC controller and play SSB:M or MK:DD and play it without any difficulty. I have yet to play a PS2 or XBOX game that doesnt require some adjustment to the controls. Also the PS2 and XBOX controllers will give anybody new to the systems horrible cramps, whereas the NGC controller fits comfortably in your hands.
Now, FPS are better on the other two because the little yellow nub is completely useless. However, racing games are much better to play on the NGC because the analog shoulder pads are much more responsive than the XBOX.
So where does this argument lead? Nintendo absolutely knows how to make great controllers. The are able to think up new ways to control games and be able to get them out there with (the exception of VB) relatively great success. Sony copies their controller ideas and attemps to improve on them (N64 analog stick and rumble pack, and MS sidewinder tilt sensors). The PS3 controller no longer has Rumble motors, the Wii controllers do. The PS3 controllers have tilt sensors, the Wii controllers can sense full 3 dimensional movement. And one thing I like, the Wii controllers have weight to them, they are actually heavier than they look whereas without rumble motors, the PS3 controllers are lighter than their predecessors.
The first FPS controller was the N64, the second will be the Wii-mote.
And this forum is about the two controllers, so try and keep it on that topic, not the price or success the Wii or PS3 may have.

I find all this consolewar arguement on the internet hillarious! What does it mean to the single user if this and that console "wins" or not? I like to play all consoles, and have most current gen consoles, plus a xbox 360! The way I see it, the most fun machines from the current gen is the PS2 and the Gamecube! And why might that be you ask? Well, those two platforms have the games that I really enjoy. I have an Xbox too, but it does nothing else then run XBMC, because the games on it don't interest me at all. They remind me all too much of the bunch of crap PC games out there. Now, with the Xbox 360 I got kinda the same feeling really. It might be next gen, and the graphics might look sweet here and there, but heck, the games are nowhere fun at all. It has too many First Person Shooters allready, out of the few games released for it. The games for the X360 just does not in any way deliver any "Wow - this is new and awesome!" experience at all. Sorry to say, but that is how I feel about it.
So, what are my thoughts about this? Who will win the next gen consolewar? Frankly, I do not really care! All I really care about are fun, newthinking, and great games! No matter what console they run on! And guess what... the majority of people will go after what they believe is fun! So you can whine from now to next summer about who will win or loose, in the end, it's the mass consumer section that will decide that!
Quick example... why do you think the Nintendo DS sells better than the PSP? Well, go have a guess, and try to think about it! You might think... "But, the PSP has better graphics!". Yeah, it really has better graphics, no doubt, but don't be blinded by that. Graphics is not gameplay! Another GTA, another EA Sports, another Daxter isn't newthinking and different, it's just what you allready have on your PS2.
Now, I don't wanna take any party here, but heck, all this whine about who's best, and who's not just gets too lame. And what's sad is, when big sites even put more fuel to the fire, so much for being objective huh?!
Remember this, the firms does not love you, neither of them, they just want your bucks, so play what you believe is fun, don't waste time on something because your friends might think you're more cool if you do so! Be your self!

Believe this or not, many people (and trust me on this one here slim) will not feel ripped off by Nintendo, as they do not promise the enduser CG movie like graphics at all. What they promise though is a whole new experience in the way of how we play our games, and I kid you not, I honestly believe they will do this bloody damn well.
Besides of that, if you do not like Nintendo games, fair enough, but many do love the Mario series, the Zelda series, and what not! I am one of those! And in my opinion someone still has to show me something better than a Zelda game!
Well, in the end, just don't be sad if the Wii is going to sell really well, and for sure way better than the Xbox 360 is doing atm.
If something is a rip off right now, it for sure is the X360 (and yes, I have one myself, I'm just not impressed at all with that darn thing!!!).

We can already see through your bullshit of never having played a DS (and already dismissing the Wii controller as a "turd" despite never playing it) simply because there isn't a single DS game that controls the way you described. Way to go.
OK Pal what ever, your a complete N00b:eek:
the fact i own a ds and mario, and obvously proves to me you dont have a clue.
those who do own a ds and mario please tell this guy that when your using you pen and you reach the top you have to take your pen off the screen and move it to the bottom.
so you go back to where ever you came from.

I actually don't think its a war to see who's going to come out on top. Its a war of who can bash the non-system of their choice.
Look at the title..
Nintendo Wii Controller Triumphs Over PS3 Controller
Tell me that's not picking a fight. The truth of the matter is... Those who are not die-hard PS3 fan-boys will not put down $600 for any console. And those who have stereotyped the Wii as a "Mario Kiddy System" won't buy a Wii unless their minds have changed.

you have it, but again ill say im not a particluar console only fan, but i baught a GC and all i could see was shitty kiddy games all the time and that is who nintendo are.
unless nintendo start making their consoles more for adults and kids instead of kids only then ill get one, but i wont waste my cash ont he Wii untill they redeme them selves.
and thousands of people hate the controller, and nintendo only fans love it, im in it for the games not the company, my opinion is both pads are crap, and the GC pad was better.
actually take a look at the pads, not read the gossid and try to imagin you trying to press the buttons on the dvd type remote when theyre that far apart, also try using the other pad with out getting hand cramp.
and you will get cramp, ask all the psp users who sometimes get cramp (i do) because its flat and has nothing to make the pad rest in your palms, like the 360,ps2/3 and GC.

I am 32 years old, a gamer like many, I have Ps2 and GC, but I just bought PS2 to play games that on GC weren t accessible. Like some SRW s titles, and one or anotehr fighting game, I am not a smash-button-nosense-running-slash-bloody-pron games addicted, after many generations like Nes, Snes, Genesisi, N64, Ps1 etc( got them all AND arcades ), you can analize the most important factor in a game is the experience when you play. Teenagers and older children tend to prefer high adrenaline and obsssessive violence games, but that doesnt speciffically means "mature".
"Oh yeah, I ripped her pants off, and I cutted the ***** with my katana , and blood splitted all aroudn the screen, I got 240 combo bonus" yeah, right..rating 16 "mature " game, for... "mature players"?
Well, I played Resident Evil, Adventures, Turn based Rpgs, and Mario & similar games on GC and PS1 & 2.
Because I like to realx playing and getting the most of a game without boring, I analize the games by how much fun i can get from it alone or with partners. So "kiddy" games, doesn't means the end of the world , or not fun at all...oppossite, I still play Mario kart DD ,or DD Revolution or Mario Mix, with people, Streefighter, Ultraman, tekken titles, etcetc. as I played Pikmin 1&2, Paper Mario and others, just for the fun, realx my brain, and amusement.
The same way you can enjoy a day in the lake , just watching the picture, air and sun, or instead getting your ears under attack 10 hrs in a row, at the DJ party.
So, to categorize "kiddy" games, just because people think they will have fun, different from your own style of game play & style , maybe waving arms on the air, smashing buttons, playing guitars, bongos, dance pads, or using a Pen on the screen as an example doesnt make you wonder how much "mature" player are you? Do this people, categorizing others, are really able to put themselves on a neutral point and wide their view to accept there is more out there, now, before and after than what they think is the "right choice"?
Personally I support the Nintendo new Cotroller initiative , I am sure I'll enjoy time playing with it, and I still would like to buy a Ps3 as well, when the time comes.
