View Full Version : Sony: We will be first, Nintendo Wii will be Second
A short ago Microsoft's Peter Moore stated that people will just buy a Wii and Xbox 360 instead of going for a PS3. Sony executive Phil Harrison has cunningly hit back and says Moore is absoltely correct in the respect that Nintendo Wii will be 'second' but mark his words as the Sony PS3 console will be numero uno come the next-gen console wars. At last Sony are actually 'fighting' back...
On Peter Moore's Praise for the Nintendo Wii
Sony's Phil Harrison debuts the PlayStation 3 controller at E3 2006
"I think Peter Moore is exactly right. I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase after PlayStation 3."
"I haven't had a chance to check out the Wii myself, but Nintendo has a great history of innovation and has always done great things for gaming and long may they do so. But as it relates to our strategy they are very much in a different market."
"I know what Peter was getting at with his price point issue but he's not comparing apples to oranges. He's not even comparing the same kind of food products at all. It's clearly a case that PlayStation 3's price is justified by PlayStation 3's value. That's what consumers base their purchasing decisions on -- value."
Frankly, I'm amazed that we can [sell the PS3] so cheaply."What we have in addition to a great game system is a Blue Ray player, a network platform, a new controller, and HDD in every system combined in an unbelievably compelling package. And frankly I'm amazed that we can do it so cheaply."
...On the PS3 Controller's Wii-Like Motion Sensor
"As mentioned, this R&D group in Japan is constantly looking at innovation in both useability, technology, and various other sensing devices and what happens is they will invent something or plan something but it can't be built because of cost reasons or supply reasons. Obviously when we make a controller we have to sell over 100 million of them so we have to make sure we have sufficient quantity of them in order to ramp up."
"I think what happened was the evolution of sensing technology was getting high enough volume in manufacture and low enough in price that we could adopt it in our controller. Now clearly we were not the only ones who thought this at the same time. But that's fine. That's natural."
"That's what technology innovation is about, but I think where we have an advantage is that shape of a controller like the PS2 controller has become like an industry standard. There's like 370 million [PlayStation controllers] around the world so that by maintaining the primary man-machine interface as something that is very familiar we have a lot of benefits to the gameplay because not only do you have the controller you're familiar with but now have additional motion."
The new PS3 controller has softer, more trigger-like R2 and L2 buttons
"We can now do with this controller what human beings do anyway which is move the controller around when they play games. So now as a game designer we can take that additional [motion-sensing] input and add it to the game experience either in a very obvious way or in a very subtle way. And we're now experimenting with various ways to do this."

right, they just happend to come up with the motion sensing tech at the same time as nintendo. i wonder how many $600 bricks we're going to have with the ps3? my first ps2 lasted just over a year and my 2nd not much longer. my 3rd ps2 held on for the longest(v7) but eventually the lazer started to go out, on to #4, the slim ps2. workin good so far...

sony doesnt sound like they made much noise at this years e3, besides mgs4 they didn't have anything to really show. After all the stuff thats been said about the ps3 this is the only thing they respond with. What about how sony put down the original xbox because of its size now there ps3 appears to be the same size. How about the comments that assassins creed was caught running on 360 hardware, and why didn't they comment on why there was no mention of killzone. These were things that needed to be answered more then who's going to win the next gen war because these are just words for war and not answers to questions.

If you don’t include Japan I think Xbox 360 would probably be first for USA/Europe, then the PS3 but Wii has a very good chance especially if 360 and PS3 gamers buy it as a second console.... hey if they all did it would win but I honestly don’t see that happening.
For Japan I recon PS3 closely followed by Wii then way down the line Xbox 360, we will know in a few years time anyway! :D

PS3 will win all the time. They will have to give the wii and 360 away for free to beat the PS3. Remeber not all customers are hardcore gamers, i hate to say it but they are probally in the minority. No one wants a wii, and the only reason people have a 360 is because the PS3 wasnt out yet.

Typical fanboy logic . People who aren't hardcore gamers aren't likely to shell out the $600 (or even $500) for a PS3 when they can buy a Wii or Xbox360 for half that price. Its just that simple.

Talk is cheap (just look at many of the comments in these forums :p ), and Phil Harrison is the one who stated that the PS3 was on track for a Spring 2006 launch recently. He did fail to say how Sony would overcome the negative publicity of the most recent E3, the issue of production problems is still present, and a response of "we'll win because we're Sony" just doesn't cut it these days. Just ask Nintendo.
I won't discount the possibility that the PS3 will eventually get the #1 spot, but I won't discount the PS3 not getting it either. The PS3 is a great deal if you were planning on getting a blu-ray player anyways. But if you weren't, you might be hesitant to get a second version of a movie you already own on DVD, if HD-DVD turns out to be the dominant format. (HD-DVD purchasers face a similar risk.) But until and unless blu-ray does take control of the market, the question will be whether what's being offered in games is worth the $500 or $600 price tag.
Otherwise, the PS3 needs a few exclusive killer apps. Since Metal Gear Solid has a history of being ported to other systems, with Hideo himself saying that it could be done on the 360, that leaves Heavenly Sword. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, Too Human, Mass Effect, Crackdown (by the original developer of the GTA series), Halo 3, and other 360 titles have already gotten more positive press than the other PS3 games, from what I've seen, and GTA4 will launch on both consoles on the same day.
My take? Nothing is certain, but at this point, I can see the Wii selling the most consoles but being #3 in game sales. Sony may catch up and surpass the 360, but at the moment I'd say the odds of it happening before 2008 are remote, and the odds of it happening at all aren't absolute. But a lot can change in 6 months, either way.

I don't know who it was the originally said it, think it came from sony but the original batarang design for the controllers was designed that way so it was less stressful on the wrists because when it is held they are in a more neutral position. Now the Dual Shock is suddenly the industry standard and every can get carpal tunnel for all they care because people ragged on the first design like it was a redheaded step child.
Personally I am not replacing close to 500 dvd's for a slightly better version of them at twice the price. I think within the next couple of years HD downloading and streaming is where we will be. Fiber optic internet connection is becoming more available to homes and it can sustain that type of load over its lines. Maybe sony should look at why Itunes is so successful. It's a great price and there is no overhead to keep an item in stock, no jewel case, no liner notes, no crazy packaging. (although I do hope Tool continues their tradition of innovative cases cause the new one is sick) All this cuts down on cost and increases profits, get rid of the media and still deliver the goods. As long as I can burn it if I choose or store it where I want to I have no problem paying to dl something instead of buying the physical product.
And as far as Sony claiming first again, let try and get out the door before making these claims. Almost every site I have visited that had someone at E3 was disappointed in what was shown by Sony. I think this video says it all,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFQz98jAcg8&search=E3%20nintendo%20stampede
Everyone runs right by the Sony display straight to the Big N's.
Let see him explain that one to the shareholders.

Everything you said is 100% true...I applaud you for making these points w/o any fanboy bias...that s*** gets old.
However, we cannot deny that Sony has done nothing to improve it's image in recent months in regard to the PS3. While MS and Nintendo have been showing us what they are doing, all we have heard from Sony is what they WILL do. Further, the only time they seem to even go that far is when they are making a rebuttal. To be fair, the media has put a lot of pressure on Sony and the PS3, but it's not like they haven't brought much of that on themselves...you can't self-proclaim you are the gaming industry gods and not expect this.
My biggest issue is not the secrecy or the apparent lack of innovation, or even the "we're Sony....HAIL US" attitude. My biggest issue is the price. $600 is too much. I can build a pretty stellar PC for that money with all the same bells and whistles, plus about 100 more features. They try to justify the price because of the "blu-ray" technology....essentially they expect people to bank on an unproven HD-DVD standard. What if Blu-ray loses the format war (which i suspect it will)? I for one am not gambling on that one.
Sony may win this latest "console war", but if they do it will be by a slim margin. Their arrogance will be their downfall, just as it was for nintendo (who fortunately saw the error of their ways and refocused).

Just a thought, If you asked who was gonna be the leader in the console market for the next-gen in SNES days, what would u have said. I think most would have said nintendo and some would of said no, sega is gonna be number 1 next. I know thats not the best way to make a point but I truely beleive no one knows what the hell is gonna happen with this gen. I do agree that xbox 360 wont rule japan but since MS is an american company, its not as important to them as it is to sony. I think nintendo may give sony a real run there. The japanese love the motion involved games. They go damn crazy for Dance Dance and nintendo have proven game design and innovation can outsell graphics with the DS (in japan at least). But anyway im just specualting, I really dont know whats gonna happen this time around, and I dont think anyone else does either. But big big video game dogs always die fast, never slow.
P.S Ive said it a couple times, and although I love nintendo. why do people always say nintendo have always brought us great innovations and have a track record to prove it. They really do have as many failed innovations as successful ones. Examples: PowerGlove, superscope, VirtualBoy. (yeah that was a great one) 1/3 of the people here went "virtual boy.....whats that". And 99/100 people on the street say "virtual boy......whats that". Just like everyone else I really hope this controller kicks ass, but lets not forget the past and act like the Nintendo seal of Quality is more than just a sticker.

$ony needs a kick in the groin. If they got one earlier they would have came into this full force. Instead we get a half ass effort to launch a system with a underpriced drive. As for the controller its great they got motion sensitive but without the vibe its the same thing. Unless $ony wakes up from king of the hill euphoria they may reach the top but late in the game. We will see after launch.
As for the 360, M$oft learned its lesson and got third partry backing. ON top of that launched (somewhat rushed) the console. They could have waited for newer next gen tech but the launch has given them the lead and developers on their band wagon because of it. Unfortunately, early adopters will lose out on processor revisions and the integration of the hd dvd drive.
The Wii (sheesh couldn't they pick revolution?) looks like the common man's console. I gave up on Nintendo after the N64 debockle. Few great games and a s* load of crap. From the demos at E3 it looks like its about to change. The same kiddie goodness along with some adult action and great gameplay. I would still wait to see if they hold up with more than E and sports titles. But I can see the console in everyhome (even senior centers).
I try to avoid any bias, but, I own the xbox and ps2. PS2 games to Xbox games 20:1. No matter what the technology the games make the system and gamers will flock to the one that will give them the most uncompromised game experience possible.
