View Full Version : Wii Wi-Fi Just Like DS
Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development's general manager, Takahashi Tezuka talked to IGN about the Wii's Wi-Fi and online functionality, Tezuka confirmed that the Wi-Fi connection on the Wii will just be an extension of the DS with no interface like Xbox Live.
IGN Wii: What is your plan for the Wi-Fi Connection and how might it compare to Xbox Live?
Takahashi Tezuka: Well, the Wii Wi-Fi Connection works the same as the Nintendo DS one. It's the three qualities that we emphasize. It's easy, safe and free.
IGN Wii: Will it have a central interface a la Live that all games will interact with, or will it be different on a game-by-game basis?
Tezuka: It'll be just like the DS so the interface will depend on the software.
IGN Wii: Will Wi-Fi Connection on Wii also use a Friends Code system?
Tezuka: Yes.

hmmmm The controller seems to be the only thing going for the wii. All this talk about sony copying, but who is the wii aimed for exactly. It seems like a toy aimed for the kids, and only for kids in Japan.
I cant see many people choosing a wii over an xbox or a playstation.
There are a generation of 20 something year old guys who grew up with a playstation and will buy a PS3 without knowing anything about and without caring what the wii or xbox 360 even is (well guys in the UK anyway).
I think the novelty of the wii's controller will wear off pretty quickly. I think a more specialsied device such as a steering wheel for a racing game or a gun for a game is much better. Maybe the one for all controller wont be all its cracked up to be.

That makes me a kid from Japan. lol
I am actually a 20 something year old (26) that will not buy a PS3; I don't have $600 for the real version. I will purchase a Wii on release day. I am a Nintendo fanboy. I have been since the NES. Nintendo lost me with the N64 to Sony. I've come back to Nintendo more and more since the GC. The GBA was great and I can't believe how amazing the DS has been. I'm expecting the same from the Wii.

Why waste the Wii on the kids in Japan? I'm sure they have plenty of other toys to play with! my take on the Wii so far is that some developers (ok lets be specific - ubisoft) have not really pulled out all the stops in their red steel game, according to ign. This maybe due to time restrictions, but their game is neither one nor the other. It doesn't have a next gen 'feel' to it, it doesn't play as it should (not as 'freestyle' as one would like), instead it compromises both and ends up missing the mark. A similar thing is happening with Metroid prime 3, but in the graphics department.
There is still time to polish and improve, but if 3rd parties are going to treat the console like that then it really does make the standard consoles seem better than they are and I'm worried that in the end the buying public will just go for graphics because the gameplay isn't whats expected. But its still early days. What with Nintendo playing down the graphics of the Wii, I hope developers are not thinking 'ok lets not bother with the graphics then' and not putting the polish on the graphics, making the wii look vastly underpowered compared to the other consoles, when it should be at least as powerful as the original Xbox. Maybe my expectations are too high, but after BLACK on the ps2, I expect every FPS to have destructable environments!
There are advantages and disadvantages to the wii controller, it's down to the developers to decide how good it is, becuase from what I hear, nintendo have done an excellent job on the controller so any fault is down to the devs to sort out.
