Sony presented a slew of information on the PS3 and PSP models. The PS3 will be out in early November 2006 across ALL regions. Every console will feature a built in hard drive and the online network service is crucial to its success. Several innovative titles were shown off including an Eyetoy card game and a Formula 1 title which utilized the PSP as a rear view mirror. Demonstrations appeared to be conducted with a refined version of a dual shock controller. As for the PSP, you can expect RSS channel, expanded UMD video profile, Voice-over IP, camera and GPS support being added to PSP in future firmware updates.

Here is an extract from Gamespots top class Coverage...

4:59: At the 18-month mark, the PSP is the fastest selling console in Sony history. They shipped 47.3 million games as of the end of March. And now they're showing a list of new games for releease by the end of the year. Apr Escape 2. Planet PSP. Killzone Liberation. B-Boy breakdancing game., Loco Roco. Syphon Filter Dark Mirror.World Tour Soccer 2. Talk Man. Gangs of London.

Kaz Hirai addresses the audience.5:03: The Greatest Hits program is coming to PSP starting with ATV Offroad Fury, Ape Escape: On the Loose, Hot Shots Golf, Twisted Metal, and Wipeout Pure.

5:05:RSS channel, expanded UMD video profile, Voice-over IP, camera and GPS support being added to PSP in future updates. Then they show a video of gamers around the world talking about their PlayStation memories.

5:08: It's arefresher course on the PS3 stats. It will support standard definition as well as high-def setups. It will communicate with the PSP and support Blu-ray video, PSone, and PS2 games.

5:12: Hirai gives a few stats saying PS users are more likely to be HD viewers. The Hard disc drive will ship with a hard drive in the box for every system.

5:14: Hirai says the "clear black" color system will be available at launch.

5:15: SCE president of worldwide studios Phil Harrison takes the stage, then promptly introduces Kazunori Yamauchi of Polyphony Digital. Yamauchi is holding what looks like a DualShock controller.

5:19: The next Gran Turismo will run at 60fps with menus designed for HD resolution. Players will be able to play vehicles ranging from race cars to commercial transportation to scooters. Hirai demonstrates the Tokyo track in replay form. He says it is broadcasting three times the amount of information on screen as normal HD broadcasts, or 12 times the amount of information GT4 on the PS2 conveys to a television. In loading another track, he asks the audience to pay attention to the load times. For Gran Turismo HD, he says it has been optimized for the hard drive-equipped PS3 and says players should be able to get from the menu to the race in two or three seconds. For the demo shown, it takes slightly longer.

5:24: A pack of cars race around a track. The engines sound like jets taking off an aircraft carrier, but before the race is finished, they cut back to the original Gran Turismo to show how far the series has come.

5:28: The third track demo is the Grand Canyon with vintage cars racing around. After the demo, Hirai says Sony will be conducting beta testing based on GT4 online capabilities in Japan and the US. He says the world of GT will not expand, but rather explode. They hope to deliver the next GT "not too far" from the PS3 launch.

5:31: EyeToy creator Dr. Richard Marx is here to introduce the Eye of Judgment, an EyeToy card battle monster game. He is placing real cards in the EyeToy's view and monster graphics are appearing on the cards to do battle. This game will be at Sony's booth.

5:34: Kaz Hirai is back out to talk about the online strategy. He says online and network will be like air conditioning in a car: a standard feature. He says online and networking for the PS3 "is as essential as the air that we breathe." He says by offering a variety of social functionalities beyond gaming (messaging, player profiles, friends list), Sony will create a community, a "virtual society," free of charge. PSP users will be able to play emulated PSone games booting up directly from the memory stick. He navigates through the PSP menu and boots up a game. Galaga comes up as the game loads. It's Ridge Racer.

5:40: Hirai says this is part of Sony's plans to leverage its systems lifespans and extend them for more than 10 years. People can pick up for "The PlayStation Card" at retailers, which will allow them to buy additional content. Phil Harrison shows the online store interface for the PS3.

He shows an example of how it will work using Singstar for the PS3, scrolling through dozens of songs from Billy Joel to Destiny's Child. The interface includes a price ($0 for now to keep the pricing strategy secret) as well as other information about the song. There's also the option to see who else is on Singstar, and customize the user's background.

They just announced that the remote will be gyroscoptic like the Wii, and the core PS3 will be $500, and the deluxe pack will be $600. ahahahahahahahahah

Hahahaha!

Sony are hilarious! They think that a last min addition to their controller can combat the Wii's :D They just get worse and worse....

...and 500bucks for a console that will probably break in 2 years (going by PS1/2) is also laughable!

PS3... now featuring Xbox Live and Wii-like control....

Between the above, rollback to PS2 Controller, and mostly all Sequels... all for $600...Looks like SOMEBODY is feeling the heat...

Pity there isn't an original bone left in Sony's body....

Will I buy one? Of course, I love all the systems... but to be honest out of all 3 Next-Gen systems... I am, BY FAR, the least impressed by Sony

hahaha that's hilarious...
if you guys remember back when Nintendo first announce the remote type controller... like 3 days later sony announces "PS3 controller design is not final"
well this is another thing sony stole from nintendo (last being the analog controller)
obviously nintendo knows what they are doing, and sony did the tricky thing (but business-wise smart thing) by waiting for Nintendo to show their cards first.

That being said, it's just a matter of time before we wait and see how exactly sony plans on using this motion sensoring type controller.

Also, this could be the primary reason the PS3 was delayed... maybe they weren't experiencing the development troubles, maybe they just wanted to tweak their games to allow for their games to be very similar to controll the way the Wii games will?

Also think of how this screws microsoft over... they are now the only console with the "traditional" or "old-fashioned" ways to control games... hmmm

I'm surprised that Sony revealed the price at that level. When they took the approach in an update I saw yesterday, talking about what features would be present (blu-ray, cell processor, etc.) without mentioning the price, I had assumed they'd be sticking with that angle for a few months. I had also assumed that the price would be adjusted based on the popularity of the blu-ray format, with more sale losses to the HD-DVD format leading to a lower price for the PS3 to help promote blu-ray. It looks like I was wrong.

It should still be interesting to see how this pans out. I'd be surprised if Microsoft doesn't announce the 360 version of their Platinum series tomorrow, perhaps with Call of Duty 2 and a few other titles dropping by $20-$30. They're likely also saving the announcement of a 360 price drop for October or so, making the Premium series less expensive than the cheapest PS3 by more than $100 come November.

Still, Sony has the Playstation name going for it, and anyone who doesn't think that the PS3 will be sold out for the first few months should give their head a shake. :)

and didn't sony laugh at microsoft for releasing 2 different consoles and 'confusing' consumers? well aren't they donig the same thing?

furthermore, $600USD for a console...
really expensive, and $500USD for the 20gig one... this is a very big price tag

even the "motion sensoring" can't help them... why pay $600USD for this when they pay less than half to get it on a system where the controller feels better

we will wait and see... sony have to change some things though...

Just so you guys know, the Motion sensor in the PS3 controller is nothing like the Wii's controller, all it uses is a gyroscope to sense tilting, nothing else.

Ummmmm, ok. How are you least impressed? I would like to know why sequels are bad and why keeping tradition in their controllers is not an original idea or bone? The best titles have spawned out of continual sequels. Oh well, guess that's an opinion that needs to be understood....somehow

I always see people bashing systems for stealing other peoples ideas. What!! you think people play nice and take turns on making money...or that they don't steal other opinions in order to capture a larger profit, audience, etc...Pfff, get off your moral high horse. It happens everyday with every business that I know (profitable ones that is). Regardless if it's xbox, nintendo, or sony, they're all the same in the same business setting--money makers. Sony, like others, will sap the life out of our wallets :) in order to get the larger gaming community. I agree with xboxmodder on the controller thing.

Nintendo has went in a totally new direction with the Wii. The wand, the backwards capability by downloading old titles to your game system, etc. That is very impressive.

The PS3 has Blu-Ray, HDMI, 1080p, etc. There isn't really anything exciting about any of that. Not very impressive.

I am also least impressed with the PS3.

Well, while I think that it is great with that motionsensor thing in the controller, I still think it's somewhat sad, that they kinda steal with both hands from Nintendo. It couldn't be more obvious that they're a bit frightened by the innovative Wii controller... and the price of the thing (PS3) is going to make me wait a couple of years before I'll buy it (just like the PS2). I mean, $499 (Which is going to be Euro 499 here) for the small model... no thanks ;)

i wonder what else will be included with the 600$ pack, 40GB sure doesnt cost $100 more by itself. ill just wait till the broken ps3's start poppin off on ebay for cheap and do some repair work like i have with so many xbox's.

i am also least impressed for the ps3, i bought 360 on launch and im prob gonna get the REVOLUTION day it comes out. i have no hard feelings about waiting on the ps3 however.

im going to laugh SO hard if nintendo announces $199.99US like i think they will after $ony says $5-600, LOL the neo-geo was priced about the same in its day and it was alot better technologically that other systems of its time. poor beta-ray:(

I totally agree. The $500 ps3 is junk, no hdmi is my biggest problem, unless theres a way to solder one on or something, it's pointless playing a ps3 on a SD resolution tv - thats reserved for the Wii.

Yes MGS4 is cool, but I STILL hate Raiden. Did you notice Ocelots right arm? Does that mean we will see a return of Liquid snake in some form?

my problem is that so far MGS4 is the ONLY game that stands out for me, GT4, Tekken 6, FF all seem standard- more of the same.

$600 and no electronic bomerang. It wont match anything in my tv cabinet. Sony seems to be on a cost cutting, time saving mission to get a console out quick?
Cant believe they havent even changed the look of the controller at all, they could have kept the shape just make it look new. All great designs are improved and updated no matter how good they are. The original ps1 controller is 10 years old, its looking outdated now.

Too pricey for me to justify buying one anyway. Im off to make a curvy piece of plastic and stick it on my ps2 to pretend its a ps3. I dont think anyone will tell the difference anyway.

Hey I like MGS, I've been following the story from the 1st series of games, (MSX emulators roxx, even if its for 1 game), so I don't mind the fmv story sections. As far as the ps3 goes, I think my mind is made up (see my other posts)

btw what has final fantasy six/seven? (ffs) got to do with anything?:p

very clever sony showing Motion Sensor controler so cunsumers think the xbox 360 is so last gen and wii and ps3 are the way to go. even if the Motion Sensor controler is hardly used in games or its crap it just gives the messege that ps3 has more then the 360. yeh the hardcore gamers know this is not true the Motion Sensor controler is just a cheap gimmick.

p.s mgs4 and heavenly sword looked awesome so check them out!!

Well, the motion sensor in PS3 is really a bad idea, the controller itself is not designed for motion sensor. A motion sensor controller have to be able to be taken in one hand unlike ps3 one...

Also think of how this screws microsoft over... they are now the only console with the "traditional" or "old-fashioned" ways to control games... hmmm

Whether that distinction will ultimately have any value though, is a question that nobody can currently answer. If it goes the way of the six button controller, or the analog controller, or the dual stick controller, it can always be added in later if a good game idea warrants it. They did come about for the Genesis, the Saturn, and the PSX respectively.

But what if it's another R.O.B. Robot, NES Powerpad, or boomerang controller? I'd be surprised if Nintendo rushed ahead with their "magic wand" controller without a potential hit on their hands. But will it revolutionize the way games are handled, or will it eventually become an optional controller like what's seen in Dance Dance Revolution, or Donkey Konga, or Samba de Amigo? And while the PS3 controller is suitable for steering the plane in Warhawk, how will it handle when you have to change armaments, or fire weapons, or change viewpoints, or anything that the buttons still call for?

As I've said before, the success of blu-ray will be having a pretty big impact as to how well Sony and Microsoft do.
